Marc Almond's Tenement Symphony isn't the only title involving the U.K. synthpop singer going deluxe this year. On October 20, UMR will give you all a boy could give you with a massive deluxe edition of Soft Cell's breakthrough debut album, Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret.
The 6CD box set, housed in a 10" x 10" box, presents the beloved New Wave classic alongside a treasure trove of B-sides, remixes, live cuts, demos and other audio curiosities. Of the set's 98 tracks, 40 of them are previously unreleased, including versions of the hits "Tainted Love," "Say Hello, Wave Goodbye," "Torch," "Bedsitter" and much more. A new essay by Adrian Thrills in the album's liner notes features new interview highlights from band members Almond and Dave Ball and plenty of photos, including scans of the many single picture sleeves that were released during the period.
Formed at Leeds Polytechnic by schoolmates Almond and Ball, Soft Cell's early material was low-fidelity but arresting electronic music, with Ball's keyboard wizardry complementing Almond's sensuous, expressive voice. Their debut single "Memorabilia," released in 1981, was produced by Daniel Miller, the founder of influential indie Mute Records - but it crashed and burned upon release. Mercury/Phonogram picked them up for a second chance, and the duo were determined to make it count. The result: a cover of an obscure Northern soul song penned by Ed Cobb and recorded by Gloria Jones. "Tainted Love" was an odd choice, but it was arresting in its electronic minimalism, and audiences around the world went nuts. It was England's biggest-selling song of 1981, and reached No. 1 in more than a dozen countries. (In America, it hit the Top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100, starting a slow rush of British synth-driven groups, including The Human League and Duran Duran, toward the top of the U.S. pops.)
Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret, recorded partially on borrowed equipment (including a top-flight Synclavier, which would have broken the bank accounts of bands three times as big), was an album that was lyrically obsessed with the underbelly of society, with album cuts like "Seedy Films" and "Sex Dwarf" serving to drive the point home. The album would spin off two more big hits in the U.K.: "Bedsitter" (No. 4) and "Say Hello, Wave Goodbye" (No. 3); in 1982, they'd release two more Top 5s that have made homes on Erotic Cabaret reissues: the No. 2 "Torch" and the No. 3 "What!" (another Northern soul cover, this time of an H.B. Barnum track spun by U.K. DJs in a version by Judy Street). Soft Cell would record through the mid-'80s, reuniting for a stretch in the early to mid-'00s and again in 2018; their last album, last year's Happiness Not Included, found them back in the U.K. Top 10.
The Erotic Cabaret box set is divided into six themed discs: the album and associated 7" sides (this program will also be available as a double vinyl), two discs of new and old remixes, a collection of rare live versions and other oddities, a disc packed with instrumental versions of the album and B-sides plus a few unearthed demos, and a performance of the album drawn from sets recorded in 2018 and 2021.
Both the box set and the vinyl sets will be released October 20. Check out the full specs below.

Joe MacPherson says
Here I go again.
I ordered the truly deluxe 6 CD plus hardcover book, box set called Culture Bunker 1978-82, by The Teardrop Explodes.
I ordered the 6 CD plus DVD and hardcover book included, very deluxe box set for Quartet by Ultravox.
I ordered the 4 CD deluxe edition boxset of The Gift, by Midge Ure, formerly of Ultravox.
I ordered the special, limited edition 2 CD set for Bauhaus Staircase, the new album by Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark.
Now I'm going to order this sinfully deluxe CD boxset by Soft Cell.
It's August 31, 2023. I can't imagine what will come next, between September-December.
Alex says
Worth noting that Mr Rubellan Remasters cast some doubt on the potential quality of the remaster, as it is being fined by Barry Grint. Concerns over compression.
BillyD says
I know.
I'm slowly going broke this year...
Paul English says
GOOD
Say Hello, Wave Goodbye Instrumental finally on CD
BAD
No 7" mix of Tainted Love
No 12" mix of Say Hello, Wave Goodbye
Wouldn't have killed them to include both and have everything in one place.
