Set turntables at 33 1/3 RPM speed! Jerry Goldsmith's score to Star Trek: The Motion Picture - restored last year for a new restoration of the film's "Director's Edition" - is coming out of warp and onto vinyl from Enjoy The Ride Records.
The reissue label, specializing in unique pressings of soundtracks on LP, will issue three separate versions of the complete film score on 140-gram double vinyl. A total of 700 copies will be issued with tri-color stripe scheme (red/orange/yellow on one disc, green/blue/violet on another, honoring the original film's key art by Bob Peak); 500 will be pressed on "wormhole" and "space" splatter vinyl (a primarily orange hue on the first LP and black and white on the other); and 300 copies will be offered with one disc of "Starship Enterprise Silver Nugget" and another a blue-black "transporter tri-color stripe." (Additionally, Mondo will have quantities on blue and white vinyl.)
It's the latest culmination of a much-more-than-five-year journey for the film and its stirring soundtrack. While the years-in-development first cinematic revival of Gene Roddenberry's sci-fi TV classic divided fans and critics, it was hard to deny the power of Goldsmith's whimsical adventure theme and innovative use of unique instruments like the "blaster beam" that shot tuned percussion through various cues. (Goldsmith's theme was, of course, adapted for the long-running sequel series Star Trek The Next Generation, introducing Starfleet and one of its most beloved themes to a new generation.)
After a Goldsmith-blessed 20th anniversary edition of the score in 1999, a dramatic new version of the film overseen by director Robert Wise, offering deleted scenes and new digital special effects, was completed in 2001. Film score archivist Mike Matessino, who worked on the Director's Edition, collaborated with original session producer Bruce Botnick and La-La Land Records for a brilliant expanded edition of the score in 2012, and returned to the film a decade later to painstakingly help oversee a 4K upgrade of the newer cut, which premiered on home video and streaming network Paramount+ in 2022 with a new reissue accompanying that release.
The double vinyl follows the main program of that 2CD set - which was also released on its own as a digital product that same year - offering the complete score as heard in the film (nearly 90 minutes of music!). The high-gloss gatefold jacket features an enhancement of Peak's original poster artwork, as well as a double-sided full-color insert.
When it comes to Trek on vinyl, there truly is no comparison. It's available starting at 12:00 p.m. CST today, September 8 - 57 years to the day that the original Star Trek series debuted - on Enjoy The Ride's official store. Check out the full track list below.
