For just over two decades, Kirsty MacColl was one of England's most uniquely talented female rock singer/songwriters. This fall, nearly a quarter century after her passing, a new box set will examine her career in-depth.
See That Girl (1979-2000), coming October 27 from Universal Music Recordings in the U.K., is an 8CD set loaded with 161 singles, rarities, remixes, live cuts and duets - including 47 previously unreleased recordings. Produced in partnership with the singer's estate, the set features two gatefold sleeves of discs and a 60-page hardback book packed in a 24 cm x 24 cm slipcase. Inside the book are new notes by journalist Jude Rogers as well as contributions and remembrances from collaborators Billy Bragg and Johnny Marr, former husband Steve Lillywhite and Dave Robinson, the executive who helped kickstart her career by signing her to Stiff Records. An outtake from her unreleased album Real, "Lullaby for Ezra," is available to hear below.
MacColl's musical gifts were partly by blood: her father Ewan was a noted compiler of folk songs - his arrangement of "Scarborough Fair" inspired Simon & Garfunkel's - and wrote a few major hits as well, including Roberta Flack's timeless "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face." But Kirsty's own talents were all her own; signing to Stiff in 1979, her debut single "They Don't Know" was a sugar-sweet slice of girl group-inspired pop. Bizarrely kept from the U.K. singles chart due to a record distributors' strike, a 1983 cover by actress Tracey Ullman (which featured a cameo by MacColl on that iconic "Ba-by") became a Top 10 hit on both sides of the Atlantic. (Her second single for Stiff, "You Caught Me Out," received a similarly challenged release; it will be repressed as a 7" alongside the release of the new box.)
By that time, MacColl had signed to Polydor, enjoying a novelty Top 20 with "There's a Guy Works Down the Chip Shop Swears He's Elvis" in 1981. Unusually, eight years elapsed between her first two studio albums, 1981's Desperate Character and 1989's Kite (released on Virgin), but MacColl hardly rested on her laurels in that time. A cover of Billy Bragg's "A New England" became her first Top 10, and in 1987 she contributed a memorable guest verse to the twisted Christmas carol "Fairytale of New York" with The Pogues, which hit No. 2 on the U.K. charts. The latter exemplified her in demand status as a backing and guest vocalist as the '80s wore on, with credits on songs by The Smiths, Talking Heads, Simple Minds, Big Country, Robert Plant and others - often collaborating with Lillywhite, to whom she was married from 1984 to 1994. (See That Girl does include the entirety of a proposed second studio album intended for release by Polydor in 1982-1983 called Real, bits of which have sputtered out across compilations in the 21st century.)
After putting a cover of The Kinks' "Days" in the Top 20 in 1989, MacColl would release two more albums in the '90s: Electric Landlady (1991) and Titanic Days (1994), the latter for the reactivated ZTT label. Both showcased her penchant for diverse rock sounds and styles, which only continued as the decade went on. MacColl cured a bout of writers' block with trips to South America, where she'd considered moving to teach English; the rhythms of Cuba and Mexico inspired a new project, the inspired Tropical Brainstorm. Unfortunately, it was released in 2000 under bittersweet circumstances: while diving with her sons on holiday in Cozumel, a boat veered into restricted waters and struck MacColl as she pushed her children out of the way. She was only 41 years old.
Though long gone, MacColl's memory is a happy one to lovers of British pop/rock - and See That Girl looks to pay tribute to her appropriately, gathering all her original single A-sides, five discs of chronological overview, a collection of recordings for the BBC and a disc of collaborative tracks with artists like her father and stepmother, Peggy Seeger; plus Bragg, Ullman, Jools Holland, David Byrne, Happy Mondays, Alison Moyet and Holly Johnson of Frankie Goes to Hollywood.

Amazon US link broken....

Noticed the same thing. Wondering if this only going to be available as an import. Would prefer not to pay those shipping fees. But this looks like a gorgeous collection.
Robert Lett says
Looks like a heck of a set but that's a little too much Kirsty for me. I only know a few of her tunes so the Galore CD will suffice. I'm thinking she was more well known in the UK?
Mike says
Galore pre-dates the Tropical Brainstorm album, which is worth checking out.
Mike says
uDiscover UK has a bundle which includes the 7", but it's not available to US buyers. The 7" is available separately from uDiscover Canada though.
^This was as of a few days ago; things may have changed.

Mike - will Second Disc follow up and inquire whether this set will be available in the US? Seems like this question is an obvious one, but is going begging. Thanks
Larry Davis says
I guess you saw my post about this set eh?? Contender for boxset of the year, but it's missing the lost Stiff single from 1979 "You Caught Me Out"/"Boys", yet I heard that UMR is releasing it as a companion 7" alongside this box but no word on how to get it...should have been included in the book just like the 7" in the identically-packaged Monty Python CD boxset of their Virgin/Charisma UK albums...also missing Kirsty's EP by her early punk band the Drug Addix...otherwise, fab set by a dearly missed unique & funny UK genius...
Derek says
UPDATE: This box set now has an Amazon US link: https://amzn.to/3Rr5iGe
BUT: It's about $25 more than the import price on amazon.co.uk. So you're effectively paying a premium for Prime delivery (if you're a member).
