Following a generous expansion of debut album Pieces of You, Craft Recordings will offer an expansion of folk-pop singer Jewel's sophomore album Spirit.
The 25th anniversary edition, available November 17, features the original album - including the Top 10 hit "Hands" - plus a raft of bonus material appended to the first disc and spilling over into the second. Extras include original single mixes, rare live B-sides and eight unreleased demos and outtakes. The original album will also be released on double vinyl on the same day.
After Pieces of Me became a juggernaut almost two years after its release, selling more than 10 million copies worldwide and spinning off the No. 2 hits "You Were Meant for Me" and "Foolish Games," Jewel Kilcher - who'd spent part of her childhood in rural Alaska - was considered one of the more striking new voices in mainstream pop music. Then only 24 at the time, she defied expectations in the time leading up to Spirit: first she released a collection of non-musical poetry, A Night Without Armor, and also filmed a supporting role in the Ant Lee-directed Western Ride with the Devil. Working with producer Patrick Leonard and a cast of session players that included bassist Flea of the Red Hot Chili Peppers and percussionist Luis Conte, Spirit features a bit more pop shine and upbeat song craft than its predecessor, and "Hands" was a fast Top 10 hit in America. While not as strong seller as Pieces, the 4x platinum certification from the Recording Industry Association of America was no mean feat.
As with Pieces of Me, the singles on Spirit - "Hands," "Down So Long," "Jupiter (Swallow the Moon)" and "What's Simple is True" - were all remixed or re-recorded for radio play; the re-do of "Simple" was released to promote Ride with the Devil. All appear on this new reissue. Additional bonus material is mostly live, including five tracks recorded in Madrid, Spain and released on a bonus disc that came with the album in other parts of the world outside America. A few unheard demos and outtakes round out the set, including an alternate of "Hands" that is now digitally available ahead of the set.
Look for the Spirit reissue on November 17 and pre-order it below.
