Say Yes! On November 24 - just in time for the holiday box set season - Rhino will lavishly expand Yes' 1971 third LP, The Yes Album, as a 4CD/1BD/1LP collection with remastered audio, previously unreleased live and studio tracks, and a brand-new Dolby Atmos mix.
The Yes Album introduced guitarist Steve Howe to the Yes lineup - he had replaced Peter Banks in 1970 - and was the band's last album to feature keyboardist Tony Kaye until 1983's 90125. Howe, Kaye, Jon Anderson, Chris Squire, and Bill Bruford crafted Yes' most musically expansive statement to that point, with jazz, folk, and funk textures becoming part of the heady progressive brew. The band members also took flight as composers; whereas Yes' first two albums had included well-chosen covers of The Beatles, The Byrds, Richie Havens, and Buffalo Springfield, The Yes Album featured entirely original material including the multi-part suites "Starship Trooper" and "I've Seen All Good People."
The Super Deluxe Edition of The Yes Album presents the album in various mixes:
- CD 1 and the vinyl LP both have Steven Wilson's newly-remastered version of the original album;
- CD 2 has Wilson's 2014 stereo and instrumental remixes of the album;
- CD 3 has a host of rarities including the single versions of "Your Move" and "Starship Trooper," mono mixes of the album's tracks, and a previously unreleased alternate of "Starship Trooper;"
- CD 4 has live tracks recorded in 1971 from Gothenburg, Sweden and New Haven, Connecticut; and
- The Blu-ray has Steven Wilson's new Dolby Atmos mix plus the 2023 stereo remaster and two presentations (DTS-HD Master Audio and LPCM) in 5.1 surround.
Steve Howe comments in the press release, "The Yes Album represents to me the invention of 70's Yes. This was aided by leaving outside material off the record and heavily investing in the influences we brought together, particularly the arrangement skills and utilizing the available best technology. Our adventurism shows in the originality of the music and lyrics, as none of us had done anything quite like this before." Steven Wilson shares of his process, "For the Atmos Mix, I used my 5.1 as a starting point but found myself taking quite a different approach on some parts of the music, partly by virtue of now having the extra speakers to place the sounds in, but also because I've learned a few things in the nearly ten years since I first remixed the album...I hope you enjoy The Yes Album in its new, fully spatialized form. To me, it still sounds as fresh as the day it was recorded." Jon Anderson adds, "It's wonderful to know that 50 years later our music is still appreciated. It was a "make or break" time for the band on many levels. The harmony within the band was really special at that time, and it came through in the music."
Eagle-eyed fans will note that much of the material on Panegyric's Wilson-helmed 2014 CD/BD edition has not been reprised here including some different live tracks and singles; fans are advised to hold onto that edition.
