With only weeks to go before La-La Land's typically huge Black Friday announcement, it's worth noting an incredible clutch of archival score reissues and premieres that have been released over the last two months. Here's a look at some recent releases - including one on vinyl - coming from La-La Land Records and Intrada.
La-La Land Records: Trek, Scarface and Jason
Some box set breakouts and a rare foray into vinyl have lit up LLL's release slate this fall. First up, second and third installments of the label's Star Trek: The Original Series - The 1701 Collection has been released. Taken from a thorough 2012 box set of scores from the legendary sci-fi series, these 2CD set features works from the first two seasons of Star Trek. In addition to works from theme composer Alexander Courage, you'll hear music from composers like Gerald Fried and Fred Steiner, who scored one of the series' most notable episodes, "The City on the Edge of Forever." (Steiner's work is the sole feature of the third volume.) Utilizing the same masters from the box (produced by Lukas Kendall, Neil S. Bulk and Jeff Bond, restored by Chris Malone and mastered by Doug Schwartz), these packages offer new artwork by Dan Goldwasser and new liner notes by Bond. All volumes in this series will be appropriately limited to 1701 units.
LLL also brings together two classic sci-fi film adaptations with scores by composer Leith Stevens. George Pal produced both the 1953 adaptation of H.G. Wells' War of the Worlds (celebrating its 70th anniversary this year) and 1951's When Worlds Collide, based on the novel by Edwin Balmer and Philip Wylie. Stevens' work helped set a template for a decade of sci-fi scoring on the big screen, and this presentation of both scores expands upon a disc by Intrada from more than a decade ago, utilizing fresh new transfers and restoration of these scores from original acetate elements. (Chris Malone co-produced the set with Goldwasser, and oversaw the restoration and mastering, which yielded several unreleased tracks from War of the Worlds.) Goldwasser's design work and John Takis' informative liner notes make this a must for fans of the genre; it's limted to just 1000 units.
La-La Land next travels from the stars to some gritty, electronic and harrowing film music memories. First up, it's a new vinyl version of Giorgio Moroder's synthesized score to the 1983 cult classic Scarface. Directed by Brian De Palma from a script by Oliver Stone, this mob flick took the rise-and-fall narrative of Al Capone and spun it into a ripped-from-the-headlines tale of Tony Montana, a ruthless gangster played by Al Pacino who emigrates to America from Cuba via the Mariel boatlift of 1980. In due course, he cunningly ascends to the top of Miami's drug trafficking - but organized crime is an easy game to lose everything. Moroder's score was nominated for a Golden Globe and remained a coveted entry in his discography and '80s soundtracks until 2022, when La-La Land combined score and songs for a 2CD presentation. Now, that score assembly - as produced by Bulk and Goldwasser and remastered by Malone - is available as a 2LP set with a full-color eight-page insert designed by Goldwasser. Limited to 1500 units, the counts will be split among two color variants: a "yeyo" pure white version, and a "chainsaw" edition that splatters the white with red coloring.
A recent haunting reissue from LLL returns listeners to the horrors of Camp Crystal Lake with an "Ultimate Cut" presentation of Harry Manfredini's score to Friday The 13th Part III. This 1982 film pitted another group of teens against the hulking, deformed killer Jason Voorhees, who for the first time covers up his visage with a now-iconic hockey mask. Originally released during a brief revival of the 3-D craze, Part III became the first film to knock E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial out of the top of the weekend box office reports. Manfredini, who scored eight of the 12 films in the series (including the first six installments) augmented his typically chilling work with a dance arrangement created alongside producer Michael Zager under the pseudonym Hot Ice. The score, first expanded for a 2012 box set from La-La Land, follows the previous two films with a new remixed, remastered presentation from original elements discovered in 2021. Engineer Jerry Lambert did the new mix, which is produced by Goldwasser and Brian Satterwhite; Satterwhite also assembled and edited the album and wrote the liner notes. James Nelson is the mastering engineer, and Scott Saslow did the new cover art in a package designed by Goldwasser.
Finally, it's worth noting that La-La Land's typically buzzy Black Friday (November 24) slate will feature six archival titles and one physical release of a score to a new film. In a break with tradition, all titles will be available for pre-order that day instead of the following Tuesday, commencing at 12:00 a.m. EST.
Intrada "Rock"s a "Solo" "from the Deep"
The last month has seen three excellent reissues from Intrada, involving three of the most loved composers of the last 50 years.
First up: an expansion of the score to 1996 action blockbuster The Rock, jointly composed by Nick Glennie-Smith, Hans Zimmer and Harry Gregson-Williams - all defining action composers of the next few decades. The sophomore directorial effort by commercial/music video director Michael Bay, working again with Bad Boy producers Jerry Bruckheimer and Don Simpson (who died five months before the film premiered), featured a ragtag team of operatives organized by the Pentagon - including a retired SAS captain (Sean Connery), an FBI analyst (Nicolas Cage) and a band of Navy SEALs - tasked with breaking into Alcatraz to save civilians held hostage by a rogue group of ex-Marines. It's typical Bruckheimer-Bay bombast, and the score is a fan favorite that gets its due here as a 2CD set offering the complete score and a selection of demos. Kaya Savas writes the liner notes included in a booklet designed by Kay Marshall, and engineer Maxine Marion handles mastering duties.
Intrada next readies a worthy archival title for fans of the late James Horner: a brilliant expansion of the second score he ever composed. 1980's Humanoids from the Deep was a spooky low-budget pulp adventure in a California fishing town, with the titular creatures (designed by make-up artist Rob Bottin) causing murder and mayhem at every turn. This haunting early work from Horner is presented two ways on one disc: the premiere complete score, newly mixed from the recently-located original 2" 24-track session masters, and a crisp remaster of the original soundtrack album mix. Marshall again designs (complete with a "flipper" booklet offering two covers) and Takis pens the notes.
And the latest from Intrada takes the label to a place no one thought possible: a galaxy far, far away. While Disney has licensed scores to their Star Wars films for specialty vinyl, this is the first time an expanded score from their 21st century purview is getting a CD release. And how fitting: John Powell's score to 2018's Solo: A Star Wars Story is among the best of the Disney era. Released digitally back in 2020, this 2CD set brings together Powell's music and adaptations of classic Star Wars themes by John Williams, plus a new original theme the Maestro penned just for this film (having never given the roguish smuggler a motif of his own). Williams also conducted a concert arrangement of that theme, included on the original soundtrack album and reprised here. Just for this package, Marshall once again offers a brilliant package with notes by Takis that feature new quotes from an interview with Powell.
All these titles can be pre-ordered below, with full track lists on display as well.

Ed says
That Solo Deluxe announcement back on Nov 1 was a welcomed surprise. There was no hesitation pre-ordering, that's for sure. I'm so happy Intrada was able to coerce Disney into letting them put it on CD. Here's hoping we get a similar treatment for the Rogue One Expanded Edition. I broke down and bought the digital files for Rogue One Expanded, but I'd still love to have a CD of it. Kudos Intrada. My Solo Deluxe should be here early next week!
