Canadian national treasures The Tragically Hip have been announced as the official Ambassadors for Record Store Day Canada. The event takes place on Saturday, April 20 (alongside the U.S., U.K., and other international RSDs). To commemorate the occasion - as well as 40 years of The Tragically Hip - the band will be releasing an exclusive concert album, Live at CBGB's, for RSD.
Live At CBGB's was recorded on January 14, 1993 at the late, lamented New York club in support of the group's third studio album, Fully Completely. The setlist of the invitation-only show (also simulcast on radio) featured nine of the album's twelve songs, including the singles "Locked in the Trunk of a Car," "Fifty Mission Cap," "Courage (For Hugh MacLennan)," and "At the Hundredth Meridian." The concert will be available on 12-inch pink vinyl at participating independent record stores in the United States and Canada.
Gord Downie (lead vocals), Paul Langlois (guitar/vocals), Rob "Bobby" Baker (guitar), Johnny Fay (drums/percussion), and Gord Sinclair (bass/vocals) made their debut on record with a self-titled 1987 EP and followed it up in 1989 with Up to Here. A best-seller at home in Canada, Up to Here earned the band a Diamond sales certification there as well as three hits ("Blow at High Dough," "New Orleans Is Sinking," and "Boots or Hearts"). "New Orleans Is Sinking" became their first song to cross over to the U.S. charts. Up to Here earned them a Juno Award for Most Promising Artist. The Tragically Hip fulfilled that promise, earning sixteen more Juno Awards and an Order of Canada between 1991 and 2021. Their catalogue encompassed thirteen studio LPs through 2016's Man Machine Poem, the final album to be released before lead singer Gord Downie's death in 2017 at the age of 53.
RSD Canada's Ryan Kerr comments in the press release, "Record Store Day Canada is overjoyed that legendary Canadian band The Tragically Hip will be the Record Store Day Canada 2024 Canadian Ambassadors. There are few bands that represent Canadiana; our traditions, values and pastimes the way The Tragically Hip does. The band is woven into the fabric of our culture and the annals of our beloved rock radio with innumerable hits. Fans continue to honor the legacy of The Tragically Hip, who brought a genuine and unique passion to their music. RSDC is looking forward to contributing to the band's ongoing legacy by releasing Live at CBGB's for Record Store Day 2024. Pressed for the very first time, it will be a great addition to collections of The Tragically Hip fans nationwide."
Live at CBGB's kicks off a yearlong celebration of The Tragically Hip's 40th and Gord Downie's legacy. A deluxe edition of Up to Here is due later this year to follow previous reissues of Road Apples (2021), Fully Completely (2022), and Phantom Power (2023). Look for Live at CBGB's on Record Store Day, April 20!
