Garbage closed a chapter of their career in 2005 with the release of their fourth album, Bleed Like Me, in 2005. Now, they're reopening that chapter with a new deluxe edition of the album, due out in April.
The deluxe Bleed Like Me follows similar expansions of the group's early discography on the Almo/Interscope/Geffen labels, where the post-grunge group - frontwoman Shirley Manson, multi-instrumentalists Duke Erikson and Steve Marker, and drummer Butch Vig - rose to fame in the '90s with high-energy singles like "Only Happy When It Rains," "Stupid Girl," "I Think I'm Paranoid" and their theme to the James Bond film The World is Not Enough. The remastered album will be paired with a 17-track bonus disc that includes non-album B-sides and remixes, material from the 2007 sessions that yielded tracks on their first compilation Absolute Garbage, and even two commercially unreleased tracks (a remix of B-side "Never Be Free" and an acoustic version of non-album fan-favorite "Witness to Your Love," recently featured on the group's latest Anthology project in 2022.)
As their first album since 2001's Beautiful Garbage, Bleed Like Me suffered from a challenging production. After a quick, promising start in 2003, almost everything that could go wrong did: Manson suffered from first a vocal cyst then a bout of writer's block, Vig and Marker's Smart Studios was damaged by a backhoe crashing through a studio wall, and no one could agree on a musical direction. Privately, the band were nearly set on splitting by the end of the year, but elected to give it one more go at the top of the following year.
Working with producer John King on opening track "Bad Boyfriend" and self-producing the rest around Los Angeles, Garbage largely abandoned the electronically augmented sounds of previous releases for a back-to-basics alt-rock approach on Bleed Like Me. (They were assisted in the studio by bassist Justin Meldal-Johnson - noted for work with Beck, Paramore, St. Vincent and others - and drummer Matt Walker, who'd kept time for Smashing Pumpkins and Filter. "Bad Boyfriend" featured Vig's longtime friend, Nirvana drummer/Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl, on the kit.) Lead single "Why Do You Love Me" became a surprise hit, becoming their first Top 10 on Billboard's alternative airplay chart - and even a brief crossover on the Hot 100 - in seven years. Other standouts include the fierce "Sex is Not the Enemy" and the haunting title track.
Though Bleed Like Me was the group's first and only Top 10 album in America, band strife was still particularly intense. The band cut their tour short and went on hiatus, briefly reconvening to record new material for Absolute Garbage in 2007, including single "Tell Me Where It Hurts." The group would re-enter the studio in 2010 and release Not Your Kind of People two years later, the first of three albums they've issued since reforming. "This album was tricky to make and resulted in the band taking a five-year hiatus shortly after it was released," Manson said in a statement announcing the reissue. "However, over the years, it has become a mainstay of our discography, so we decided to finally make it available on vinyl due to the many pained pleas from our fans."
Indeed, 2CD and 2LP editions of the deluxe Bleed Like Me (the latter format featuring the 10 B-sides on the bonus disc) are due for worldwide release April 5. Amazon links are still populating around the world, but are posted below. (As an Amazon affiliate, we earn commission from these links.)

The Thorn says
I love this album to death - it seems to me to be their most-underrated. I was a fan of theirs from day one, before the first album came out, and love them still. But, wow, this album is a scorcher. ♥♥♥
I can't wait to hear the unreleased material. Too much is never enough with Garbage. 🙂
