Real Gone again has a wide variety on tap for its March line-up on CD and vinyl. You'll find pop, rock, and heavy metal from the 1950s through the early 2000s in this slate of releases. All of these titles will be available tomorrow, March 1.
Last December, a PBS special debuted devoted to the careers and legacy of Steve Lawrence and Eydie Gorme. Hosted by their son, David Lawrence, Steve Lawrence and Eydie Gorme: Memories of My Mom and Dad traced the music of the duo over the decades with performance and remembrances. It was accompanied by a 4-CD PBS exclusive box set, The Steve & Eydie Ultimate Collection (featuring liner notes by our very own Joe Marchese). Now Real Gone is bringing a single disc, hits-focused CD collection of the pair to general retail, The Original Hits.
Steve and Eydie married in 1957 after being regulars on The Tonight Show. They maintained thriving solo careers but also began to record as a duo. The Original Hits' 20 tracks chronicles many of their chart successes. You'll hear Eydie's "You Need Hands" (#11 Pop), "Sabor A Mi," "Blame It on the Bossa Nova" (#7 Pop), and "Tonight I'll Say a Prayer" (#45 Pop), and others. From Steve, the disc includes "Party Doll" (#5 Pop), "Go Away, Little Girl" (#1 Pop) "Footsteps" (#7 Pop), "Portrait of My Love" (#9 Pop) and the Paul Williams/Roger Nichols sunshine pop rarity "The Drifter" (# 14 AC) which has been newly remixed for inclusion here and on The Steve & Eydie Ultimate Collection. On the duet side, "I Want to Stay Here" (#28 Pop), "I Can't Stop Talking About You" (#35 Pop), and "We Can Make It Together" (featuring The Osmonds) (#68 Pop) are all featured.
Real Gone's new compilation has been assembled with the assistance of David Lawrence. It features rare photos and notes by Paul Grein. Real Gone has indicated it is the first of several reissues to come from the Steve Lawrence and Eydie Gorme catalog.
Next, Real Gone is bringing a couple of hard rock albums to vinyl. In 1992, Journey and Bad English guitarist Neal Schon joined future brothers-in-law Johnny and Joey Gioeli on guitars and vocals and a rhythm section of bassist Todd Jensen and drummer Deen Castronovo in the band Hardline to record their debut album, Double Eclipse. The singles "Takin' Me Down" and "Hot Cherie" hit the Mainstream Rock Tracks chart at #37 and #25, respectively. But Hardline would break up within a year and Schon rejoined Journey. The Gioeli brothers would eventually reform the band which would release its next album in 2002. The group has remained active since then, releasing five more albums, the most recent being 2021's Heart, Mind and Soul. Real Gone's reissue comes on fire orange vinyl.
Nu-Metal band Spineshank (featuring Jonny Santos on vocals, Mike Sarkisyan on guitar, Robert Garcia on bass, and Tommy Decker on drums) took a more commercial approach towards hard rock on their third album, Self-Destructive Pattern in 2003. The new direction paid off as the LP became their most successful to date and garnered a Grammy nomination for "Best Metal Performance" for the track "Smothered." The album peaked at #89 on the Billboard 200. But Santos soon announced he was leaving the group and it broke up as the other members could not find a suitable replacement vocalist. Santos would rejoin the other three members for one album in 2012 before the band broke up for the second, and as of now, final time. Just as they did for Spineshank's second album in 2022, Real Gone is giving Self-Destructive Pattern its vinyl debut. It comes on bone white vinyl and is limited to 1,000 copies.
The Donnas formed in California in 1993. Brett Anderson (lead vocals), Allison Robertson (guitar, backing vocals), Maya Ford (bass guitar, backing vocals), and Torry Castellano (drums, percussion, backing vocals) met when they were in the eighth grade. The self-taught musicians formed a band to perform at a school dance. The quartet initially formed a group called The Electrocutes which had a metal queen image. But, deciding they also wanted to play some softer tunes without changing that group's style, they also began to perform as The Donnas, where each member used the stage name of Donna. Their first single, "High School Yum Yum," came out in 1995 and their self-titled debut album was released in 1997 on the small Super*Teem! label. The group had to take a week off from their senior year of high school to tour Japan from promotion. The band would sign with Lookout label the next year. Real Gone's compilation Early Singles 1995-1999 collects fourteen single sides from their first two labels during those five years. In 2002, they signed with Atlantic Records for a pair of albums. The Donnas would release one more album, Bitchin', for the Purple Feather label in 2007 before breaking up.
Real Gone first released Early Singles 1995-1999 last year on Record Store Day as a limited edition vinyl LP and then a few weeks later on CD. They are now bringing the vinyl to general retail, pressed on dark purple vinyl. The insert contains rare photos and memorabilia plus track-by-track commentary and liner notes by all four band members. It has been remastered by Mike Milchner at SonicVision.
Lastly, Real Gone is re-pressing on vinyl the self-titled debut album from Fanny. When Richard Perry signed the group to Reprise in 1969, they became the first all-female rock band signed to a major label. The foursome (June Millington on guitar, Jean Millington on bass, Alice De Buhr on drums, and Nickey Barclay on keyboards) released their debut, self-titled album in 1970, produced by Perry. They soon created a buzz around Los Angeles which led to television appearances, session work, and opening for acts such as Slade, Jethro Tull, and Humble Pie. Real Gone first reissued this album on vinyl back in 2020 on white vinyl. It is now being re-pressed to "orange crush vinyl," limited to 1,000 copies.

I was rather surprised to see that Hallelujah was left off of the Steve & Eydie collection. Also, does anyone know who owns the master to the Steve & Eydie recording of Black Hole Sun from the awesome 1997 album Lounge-A-Palooza? It would be great for that track to be included at some point in the reissue program.
Joe Marchese says
That track is still owned by Disney/Hollywood Records. It's a great one, indeed.
Kenneth Dobin says
I have some doubts about the sources used for Steve/Eydie. While I don't have the resources to compare these to the 45 versions, it's clear that Don't Be Afraid Little Darlin is not the double-tracked single version.
Do you or other fans have any opinions on this?
Joe Marchese says
The producers chose to use a new, first-time stereo mix for that track, sourced from the original three-track master tapes. Hope this helps!
Robert Lett says
Just ordered this! As a side note Twin Cities PBS somehow flubbed my donation order of Classics and Collectibles and Ultimate so called this morning and they claim to have gotten it straight, fingers crossed. Anyone else gotten those yet?
Santi Paradoa says
Hi. Is it possible to know which tracks are stereo and which are mono for the Steve and Eydie original hits CD compilation? Thanks for the info on the first-time stereo mix of "Don't Be Afraid Little Darlin'."
Joe Marchese says
I believe that "I Want to Stay Here," "Go Away, Little Girl," "Don't Try to Fight It, Baby," "Don't Be Afraid, Little Darlin'," "I Can't Stop Talking About You," "I Want You to Meet My Baby," "Poor Little Rich Girl," "Walking Proud," and the aforementioned "The Drifter" are all new stereo mixes.
Santiago Paradoa says
Many Thanks Joe. Does this mean the other eleven tracks are mono?
Joe Marchese says
The set's producer has clarified that the Columbia singles have been newly mixed into stereo other than "Go Away, Little Girl" and "Blame It on the Bossa Nova." The earlier sides are in their original mono mixes; the later sides (RCA and beyond) are in their original stereo mixes.
Harry Cohen says
I received my Steve and Eydie CD last Friday but did not get around to playing it until today.
Moments after playing it for the first time, I found out that Steve had died.
Thanks for the great entertainment, Mr. Lawrence.
Tonight I'll Say a Prayer For You.
