Chaka Khan, Chaka (Warner/Rhino)
CD: Amazon U.S. / Amazon U.K. / Amazon Canada
LP: Amazon U.S. / Amazon U.K. / Amazon Canada / Barnes & Noble
Chaka Khan announced her solo freedom with "I'm Every Woman," the euphoric opening track on 1978's Chaka. At 25 years old, Khan was already a veteran of the funk-rock band Rufus with whom she had recorded landmark hits like "Tell Me Something Good" and "Sweet Thing," but Chaka took her emotive style in a new, mainstream R&B direction. The Warner Bros. album, produced by the legendarily versatile Arif Mardin (Dusty Springfield, Bee Gees), placed Khan's powerful voice front and center with the support of the cream of New York's session scene. Chaka, newly remastered by Bernie Grundman, returns to kick off a reissue series for the singer which will also encompass remastered versions of Naughty (1980) and What'cha Gonna Do for Me (1981) later this year from Rhino. No bonus tracks have been added to the original album sequence. Available on CD, LP, and digitally. Read more here.
Alice Coltrane, The Carnegie Hall Concert (Impulse!/UMe)
2CD: Amazon U.S. / Amazon U.K. / Amazon Canada
2LP: Amazon U.S. / Amazon U.K. / Amazon Canada / Official Store (Exclusive Orange Vinyl)
In 1971, Alice Coltrane performed at Carnegie Hall at a gala benefit for the Integral Yoga Institute. Supported by Kumar Kramer and Tulsi Reynolds, playing harmonium and tamboura, respectively, and a large ensemble comprising two saxophonists (Pharoah Sanders and Archie Shepp), two bassists (Jimmy Garrison and Cecil McBee), and two drummers (Ed Blackwell and Clifford Jarvis), pianist-harpist-composer Coltrane captivated with two compositions from her recent album Journey in Satchidananda and two from her late husband, John Coltrane. Now, this concert is being released for the very first time as part of the Year of Alice, a year-long initiative from Verve and Impulse! Records and The John & Alice Coltrane Home. Available on 2CD, 2LP, and digitally.
The Cure, Paris: 30th Anniversary Edition (Elektra/Rhino)
1CD: Amazon U.S. / Amazon U.K. / Amazon Canada
2LP: Amazon U.S. / Amazon U.K. / Amazon Canada
The Cure's 1993 double live album Paris is getting a slightly belated 30th anniversary edition courtesy of Rhino. The 2LP and 1CD expanded editions premiere two bonus tracks, and all audio has been newly remastered by frontman Robert Smith and Miles Showell at Abbey Road Studios. The black vinyl edition has been cut by Showell. Paris arrived in stores in October 1993 - the group's third live release in just over two years. This set arrived only one month after Show, both of which chronicled The Cure's 1992 tour in support of their ninth studio album Wish, the most commercially successful LP in the band's discography. Whereas Show captured a concert from The Palace of Auburn Hills in Michigan, Paris - as the title indicates - was recorded over three nights in the City of Lights at Le Zenith de Paris. The 30th anniversary reissue adds previously unreleased live versions of "Shake Dog Shake" and "Hot Hot Hot!!!" The album sequence has been reconfigured to accommodate these tracks which now open and close the set, respectively. Read more here.
Status Quo, The Early Years 1966-69 (Sanctuary/BMG) (Amazon U.S. / Amazon U.K. / Amazon Canada)
BMG brings together mono and stereo version of Status Quo's first two albums along with pre-Status Quo material from the group's days as The Spectres and two discs of bonus tracks (singles, demos, alternates, live tracks), for a total of 107 tracks on 5 CDs. A 40-page booklet is also included.
Pearl Harbour, Don't Follow Me, I'm Lost, Too (Expanded Edition) (Liberation Hall) (Amazon U.S. / Amazon U.K. / Amazon Canada)
Liberation Hall has reissued the 1980 Warner Bros. solo debut of Pearl Harbour, late of Pearl Harbor and The Explosions. Don't Follow Me, I'm Lost, Too, is a concentrated blast of pure adrenaline, with a punk attitude and a debt to the birth of the rock-and-roll genre. The album features Wilko Johnson of Dr. Feelgood; Nigel Dixon of Whirlwind; Steve New of Rich Kids; Steve Goulding of Graham Parker and The Rumour; and Paul Simonon, Topper Headon, and Mick Jones of The Clash, plus pedal steel great BJ Cole and saxophonist Gary Barnacle. This expanded edition features six bonus tracks including B-sides, demos, and a U.K. non-LP side. Available on CD, purple grape LP, and digitally. Note that the LP has 15 tracks vs. the CD's 17 due to the vinyl format's time limitations.
Shakin' Street, Scarlet: The Old Waldorf, 1979 (Liberation Hall) (Amazon U.S. / Amazon U.K. / Amazon Canada)
Liberation Hall also delivers a live release from Shakin' Street, the band fronted by Fabienne Shine. Scarlet: The Old Waldorf, 1979 captures a high-energy show recorded as the group was opening for The Jim Carroll Band. The gig was preserved by KALX radio deejay and producer Terry Hammer and now premieres on CD and limited-edition ruby red vinyl. Due to time limitations, the vinyl offers nine tracks while the CD has thirteen. Bill Kopp provides the new liner notes. Available on CD, LP, and digitally.
Tammy Wynette, You Brought Me Back: Expanded Edition (Cherry Red/Morello) (Amazon U.S. / Amazon U.K. / Amazon Canada)
Tammy Wynette's 1981 Chips Moman-produced album You Brought Me Back, her 24th studio album, finally arrives on CD in an expanded edition with five non-LP sides.
