Brenda Lee, The International Brenda Lee (Brenda Lee Sings in German, French and Italian) (UMG Nashville/UMe) (iTunes / Amazon)
Bear Family's 1992 collection featuring Brenda's songs in German, French, and Italian has hit streaming and download; tracks include versions in all three languages of "Anybody But Me" and "Fool No. 1" and a host of original German-language compositions. Bert Kaempfert was among the producers. Brenda comments in the press release for this digital reissue, "I was so lucky to not only travel many times overseas, but also to record and perform in the native languages of my international fans. It was a challenge, but something so fun and different. It's amazing to me that six decades later, these very special songs can be heard in a new way."
The Alan Parsons Project, Eve (Sessions) (Arista/Legacy) (iTunes / Amazon)
The second of The Alan Parsons Project's digital Sessions series brings together a selection of demos, rough mixes and other material from the 1979 album Eve (all of which was featured on Legacy's 2007 expansion of the album), plus single edits of "Lucifer" and "Damned If I Do" (which were not).
Henry Mancini with The London Symphony Orchestra, In a Concert of Film Music (RCA) (iTunes / Amazon)
Here at TSD HQ, we're always thrilled to get more from Henry Mancini. (The timing couldn't be better: next month would be Mancini's 100th birthday, and plans are afoot for an all-star tribute album featuring Michael Buble, Lizzo, Quincy Jones, John Williams and many more.) This 1976 album, making its digital premiere, finds the composer-conductor presiding over a symphonic program of classic movie tunes including suites celebrating Nino Rota, French composers Michel Legrand and Francis Lai, and disaster movies. He also includes his own "The Great Waldo Pepper March" and a medley of themes from 1974's The White Dawn (which featured the late, great Louis Gossett, Jr.).
David Ryan Harris, David Ryan Harris (Columbia) (iTunes / Amazon)
Here's the acclaimed 1997 Columbia debut of singer-songwriter-guitarist David Ryan Harris, formerly of the Atlanta band Follow for Now and a collaborator of Dionne Farris. (To millennials, he's best known as the longtime second guitarist in John Mayer's touring band.) Harris' major label solo debut was helmed by Brendan O'Brien (Rage Against the Machine, Bruce Springsteen) and reflected the diversity of influences inherent in Harris' music, from Prince to Paul McCartney, Jimi Hendrix to Stevie Wonder.
White Girl in Danger: Original Off-Broadway Cast Recording (Yellow Sound Label) (iTunes / Amazon)
The bold and ever-provocative music and lyrics of Michael R. Jackson are currently shocking and entertaining off-Broadway audiences with the new horror musical Teeth. But here's the original cast recording of the prolific, Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winning librettist-songwriter's 2023 musical White Girl in Danger. The album features the talented ensemble consisting of Rocky Anicette, Liz Lark Brown, LaDonna Burns, Alexis Cofield, Kayla Davion, Shane Donovan, Latoya Edwards, Jennifer Fouché, Morgan Siobhan Green, Molly Hager, Ciara Alyse Harris, Vincent Jamal Hooper, James Jackson Jr., Tarra Conner Jones, Alyse Alan Louis, Lauren Marcus, Jon-Michael Reese, Eric William Morris, and Natalie Walker. Jackson shares in press materials, "White Girl in Danger is my satirical love letter to the soap opera genre of my childhood and an emphatic and very Black articulation of my rage against the machinery and narcissism of contemporary American race and racism obsession. It has been my greatest pleasure to return to Yellow Sound Label to get that articulation of rage on the record."
