Welcome to another edition of The Weekend Stream, The Second Disc's review of notable catalogue titles (and some new ones, too!) making digital debuts. This week's super-sized post-Record Store Day lineup includes more: more remixes, more covers, more Mancini and yes, more Taylor Swift. As an Amazon affiliate, we earn from qualifying purchases.
Taylor Swift, The Tortured Poets Department: The Anthology (Republic) (iTunes / Amazon)
Can you really call this a reissue? Pop's most ubiquitous A-lister whipped fans into a frenzy by announcing her 11th studio album shortly before picking up her fourth Grammy Award for Album of the Year (for 2022's Midnights) - and then, similar to her release plan for Midnights (which digitally dropped a "3AM Edition" three hours after the standard album was released), revealed a double album version of The Tortured Poets Department only two hours after its release, with 15 extra tracks that doubled the set's running time. Four of those tracks were present on various limited edition CD releases of the standard album, which I would certainly find annoying if I rushed to get all those versions. (I did not, partially assuming something like this was going to happen.) The Second Disc isn't silly enough to be against the idea of digital music - otherwise, this column wouldn't exist - but it would be nice for someone guaranteed to sell a lot of physical albums to respect the concept just a little better.
Henry Mancini, The Mancini Touch / Gunn...Number One! (RCA Victor) / Henry Mancini, Quincy Jones, John Williams, Herbie Hancock & Arturo Sandoval, Peter Gunn (Primary Wave)

Gunn...Number One!: iTunes / Amazon
Peter Gunn: iTunes / Amazon
This week finally marked the centennial of the legendary film composer, and beyond two more LPs in his RCA Victor discography making their digital debuts - a 1959 album of mostly original dance music, and the soundtrack to the 1967 film continuation of Peter Gunn, whose theme put Mancini on the map nearly a decade prior - but a new series of tribute recordings have finally been set for a June 21 release. The Henry Mancini 100th Sessions: Henry Has Company will feature new takes on classic Mancini themes with contributions by Stevie Wonder, Lizzo, Michael Bublé, Gustavo Dudamel and The Los Angeles Philharmonic and Pat Metheny. The first track and lead single is a star-studded rendition of the Peter Gunn theme, conducted by Quincy Jones and featuring searing trumpet from Arturo Sandoval plus dueling pianos by Herbie Hancock and John Williams (who famously reprises that low piano riff from the original recording of the theme).
Willie Nelson, Long Story Short: Willie Nelson 90 (Live At Hollywood Bowl) (Legacy) (iTunes / Amazon)
Already bursting at the seams at 53 tracks when it was released last Christmas, this 2023 tribute to one of country's oldest outlaws - featuring performances by Nelson, Kris Kristofferson, Keith Richards, Stephen Stills, Neil Young, George Strait, Booker T. Jones, Dave Matthews, Sheryl Crow, Rosanne Cash, Snoop Dogg, Norah Jones, The Chicks, Bob Weir, Chris Stapleton, Jack Johnson, Lyle Lovett, Tom Jones, Margo Price, Beck, The Avett Brothers, Ziggy Marley, and about twice as many more - now increases by one more track: a heretofore unreleased rendition of The Lumineers covering Leon Russell's "A Song for You."
INXS, Suicide Blonde (Oakenfold Milk Mix) / Elegantly Wasted (Shagsonic Remix) / The Strangest Party (These Are the Times) (Apollo 440 Mix) (Petrol/Atlantic)
Suicide Blonde: iTunes / Amazon
Elegantly Wasted: iTunes / Amazon
The Strangest Party: iTunes / Amazon
With the fourth, fifth and sixth 12" singles in INXS' remix suite All Juiced Up Part 2 due to ship this month, their contents are starting to be made available as digital singles. Three vintage '90s remixes are now ready to stream and download.
U2, Staring At the Sun (Island/UMe) (iTunes / Amazon)
The second in U2's ongoing series of digital EPs includes two remixes of the terrific Pop single "Staring At the Sun," the non-LP B-side "North and South of the River," and the Passengers album cut "Your Blue Room."
Madonna, Angel (Warner/Rhino) (iTunes / Amazon)
Another digital remix EP from Madonna includes versions of the Like a Virgin single "Angel" and the original mix of its arguably more popular non-LP B-side: "Into the Groove."
David Byrne, David Byrne Does Hard Times (Atlantic) (iTunes / Amazon)
Pop-punk icons Paramore owed a massive sonic debt to Talking Heads on their last two albums (2017's After Laughter and 2023's This is Why), and in fact covered "Burning Down the House" for a forthcoming tribute album patterned after Stop Making Sense. The trio served as this year's Record Store Day ambassadors and had not one but two releases issued to indie stores yesterday: their remix album Re: This is Why and that aforementioned "Burning Down the House" cover, backed with Talking Heads frontman David Byrne's own version of their After Laughter single "Hard Times." Luckily, if you didn't want to wait in line, you can still hear Byrne's horn-infused take.
Tony Perkins, From My Heart (RCA Victor) (iTunes / Amazon)
Already known as an idol of stage (Tea and Sympathy, Look Homeward, Angel) and screen (Friendly Persuasion) but two years from taking on his most famous role as Norman Bates in Alfred Hitchcock's adaptation of Psycho, Anthony Perkins was also a singer of some note. 1958's From My Heart was his third of four albums, and second for RCA Records; on it, he sang light easy-listening and soundtrack-related tunes ("Swinging on a Star," "Taking a Chance on Love") with the backing of trumpeter Urbie Green and His Orchestra, as arranged by brass hero Al Cohn.

I LOVE the song, "Peter Gunn". I watched that YouTube video of the sessions where they recorded the new version. Does anybody know if the released version will be significantly longer than the one on there? It's only 1:15, plus it sounds like they chopped a big chunk out of it! Other than that, it sounds awesome! I may have to restart that old "Best of Peter Gunn" mixtape (CD) that I never finished, back in the 1980's.
John Foster says
OK, never mind. I saw on Amazon that the song on there is 2:40. Still not long enough! But "Leave 'em wanting more", I guess...
