Seven decades ago, the mighty Godzilla first rose from the sea to become one of Japanese film's most legendary characters. This summer, with interest in the character still at an all-time high, Universal Music Group's Japanese arm will reissue nearly two dozen classic soundtracks from the film series.
UMG will newly remaster and repress on SHM-CD the scores to the 15 Shōwa-era Godzilla films released between 1954 and 1975, as well as the seven Heisei-era pictures which came out between 1984 and 1995, as part of the series' 70th anniversary "Complete Works" campaign. (These era names correspond to the emperor of Japan at the time; a series of Millennium era films were made between 1999 and 2004, with the current Reiwa era starting in 2016.) These pressings largely correspond to a series of "Great Collection" reissues issued by Futureland/Toshiba-EMI in 1993 for the franchise's 40th anniversary, with the addition of the last two Heisei-era films, 1994's Godzilla Vs. SpaceGodzilla and Godzilla Vs. Destoroyah, for good measure.
The original film, directed by Ishiro Honda, distributed by Toho and featuring special effects conceived by Eiji Tsuburaya, was a prime example of the tokusatsu genre of Japanese film - essentially, sci-fi/fantasy/horror films that use major practical special effects - while creating its own subgenre: the kaiju film, in which the effects revolved around giant monsters played by actors in fitted suits. Gojira, as he was known in Japan, represented Japan's anxieties in the wake of World War II. The country, ravaged in part by atomic bombs dropped by American forces, created this hulking dinosaur-like creature with prominent dorsal plates and the ability to blast atomic energy from its jaws, emerging from the depths as the result of the nuclear impacts. (American audiences got a slightly different version of the film two years later: Godzilla, King of the Monsters! didn't entirely remove the nuclear angle, but filtered it through the lens of new footage featuring an American journalist played by Raymond Burr.)
Over time, Godzilla would evolve from a symbol of the nation's horror and fear to an unlikely, unpredictable protector, squaring off against other kaiju like the winged Rodan, the oversized larvae Mothra, the three-headed dragon King Ghidorah, a robotic duplicate named Mechagodzilla, and even a version of King Kong, the giant ape from the 1933 film that served as one of Godzilla's greatest inspirations. Toho cannily rebooted the continuity several times, even killing Godzilla off in the final Heisei-era film; the current Reiwa era has tackled sharp government satire in 2016's Shin Godzilla, dabbled in a trilogy of anime features, and most recently the semi-reboot Godzilla Minus One (2023), which retold the story in the immediate wake of Japan's surrender at the end of World War II. (That film earned critical raves and an Oscar for Best Visual Effects.) America has even tried its hand several times at making Godzilla movies: a 1998 film from the team that made Independence Day was a notorious flop with a revered film score, but since 2014, Legendary Pictures has brought the big guy back to the West for the "MonsterVerse" franchise that includes two Godzilla films (one with Rodan, Mothra and King Ghidorah), a pair of films featuring a similarly rebooted Kong (Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire was released in theaters just last month), and even the popular AppleTV+ series Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, which tells stories about the human characters who've tracked Godzilla and other kaiju for decades.
More than a marvel of special effects, Godzilla was lauded early on for its stirring score by Akira Ifukube. The composer penned the entire score, rich with leitmotifs including a driving main theme for the creature and a memorable march for the Japanese Self Defense Forces, in just a week, having only seen a model of the creature. Moreover, Ifukube perfected the sound design for the creature itself, famously loosening the strings on a contrabass, rubbing against them with a pine tar-coated leather glove, and slowing down the recording to create Godzilla's immediately recognizable roar. Ifukube returned to score a total of 11 Godzilla films across the Shōwa and Heisei eras, with other composers like Masaru Sato and Riichiro Manabe filling in between.
Now these vital works are back in print for physical media collectors, newly remastered with the original liner notes replicated and "theater window billboard jacket" cover designs. (The seven Heisei-era albums will also feature reversible cover art, featuring poster illustrations on one side and photo artwork on the other.) The 15 Shōwa titles will be released in Japan on May 29, with the seven Heisei titles following on June 26. Full details and order links are below. (The * denotes releases in mono.)

Thank you Joe! Much appreciated!
