New Order will release the latest in their Definitive Edition series of album reissues: their fourth album, 1986's Brotherhood.
Available November 22, Brotherhood (Definitive Edition) will follow the previous three release formats, offering the remastered album on CD and vinyl along with a bonus disc of material (including nine previously unreleased tracks) and two DVDs of unseen video footage, including live concerts and TV appearances. As with previous releases, the Definitive Edition will not port over all the extra material from bonus discs in the 2008 reissue of the same album, but many of those remixes and B-sides will come back into print with reissues of the original 12" singles related to Brotherhood - in this case, non-album singles "State of the Nation" and "Touched by the Hand of God" (the former of which was included on CD copies of Brotherhood, and the latter appearing on the soundtrack to the televangelist black comedy Salvation!) and the band's U.S. breakthrough "Bizarre Love Triangle."
Brotherhood found New Order - long risen from the ashes of Joy Division in the early '80s - taking their first steps toward a new plateau of success. The year before, the band's Low-Life was their first to be issued concurrently in the United States as part of a deal with the label Qwest Records, overseen by Quincy Jones. Earlier in 1986, writer/director John Hughes commissioned their track "Shellshock" for the soundtrack of his hit comedy Pretty in Pink (which also featured synth-driven classics like OMD's "If You Leave" and "Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want" by fellow Manchester group The Smiths).
The album was unusually divided into two cohesive havles, one offering post-punk tracks ("Paradise," "Broken Promise") and the other featuring sleek electronic dance cuts ("Bizarre Love Triangle," "Angel Dust"). It was a decision the band - singer Bernard Sumner, bassist Peter Hook, drummer Stephen Morris and keyboardist Gillian Gilbert - variously had mixed feelings about in subsequent years. Nonetheless, they earned their third consecutive Top 10 album in England, and "Bizarre Love Triangle" - arguably the group's most pop-oriented single at the time - surged to No. 4 on Billboard's dance chart, as a double A-side with "State of the Nation." This activity primed the pump for one of their biggest releases yet, the compilation Substance 1987 (itself recently expanded by Rhino).
Both Brotherhood (Definitive Edition) and the 12" reissues are preceded by the beginning of the second season of Transmissions: The Definitive Story of Joy Division and New Order. This podcast, narrated by Elizabeth Alker of BBC Radio, features new and exclusive interviews with all the members of New Order (including former bassist Hook) as well as many famous fans and collaborators, including Billy Corgan of Smashing Pumpkins, Johnny Marr of The Smiths, longtime graphic designer Peter Saville, producer/mixer Arthur Baker, Neil Tennant of Pet Shop Boys and others. Season 2 covers the band's evolution from Brotherhood to 1993's Republic.
