The influential guitar work of Rory Gallagher will be celebrated next month in an exhaustive box that collects hours of his live recordings for the BBC.
The BBC Collection, available October 11, is an 18CD/2 Blu-ray set that mines both the radio service and the late musician's personal archives to bring together his in-studio appearances, live concerts, television specials and even a radio documentary. This box, of course, supersedes a 1999 double-disc collection of BBC highlights, offering not only about 75% previously unreleased material but even recordings that never even hit the airwaves before. The BBC Collection features a lengthy essay from author Colin Harper, featuring new quotes from Jeff Griffin (a frequent BBC producer), Gallagher's bassist Gerry McAvoy, and other U.K. peers. A 2CD or 3LP set will offer 24 of the more than 150 music tracks on the big set, as well as an edited version of the essay.
Though virtually unrecognized outside of Europe and the general guitar fan community, Rory Gallagher's killer blues style - heavily influenced by Muddy Waters and Lead Belly - became a cornerstone of rock and roll in the '70s. Brian May credited him with influencing the sound of his own distinct playing, and everyone from Slash and Johnny Marr to The Edge and Alex Lifeson of Rush has cited him as a formative player in their own development. Coming from the power trio Taste in the late '60s and going solo in the early '70s, all 14 albums released during his lifetime went either gold or silver in the United Kingdom. With his master recordings landing at Universal Music Group in recent years after a term with Sony Music Entertainment, UMC has kept the train rolling with a new box set, 2019's Blues, a career-spanning best-of, and 50th anniversary deluxe versions of his 1971 albums Rory Gallagher and Deuce. Some of those sets featured BBC recordings, which are of course repeated here alongside numerous unheard gems, sourced from original transcription discs and cassette recordings between 1971 and 1986.
The BBC Collection and its slimmer volumes will be available October 11 and can be pre-ordered below. As an Amazon affiliate, we earn from qualifying purchases.

It looks like this set is already sold out across the board after only one month! Any idea if any other copies will be released at some future date?
