Light in the Attic is accelerating its Nancy Sinatra Archival Series with the November 29 reissue of the singer's fourth and fifth studio albums, both from 1967: Sugar and Country, My Way. Both of these expanded editions will be available on CD, LP, and digitally.
Sugar capped off an incredibly prolific year for Sinatra. The fourth album she recorded in 1966, Sugar was nominally named for the sweet and seductive, Lee Hazlewood-penned "Sugar Town," a top 5 Pop/No. 1 AC hit. Though album producer Hazlewood also contributed Coastin', the LP was mostly dedicated to what the back cover described as "sweet, soulful serenades from the old-timey years." Working with arranger-conductor Billy Strange, Sinatra and Hazlewood reached back to the roaring twenties and earlier for such vintage tunes as "Oh! You Beautiful Doll" (1911), "Sweet Georgia Brown" (1925), "Hard Hearted Hannah" (1924), "Button Up Your Overcoat" (1928), and "My Buddy" (1922). Irving Berlin's "What'll I Do" (1922) and Cole Porter's "Let's Fall in Love" (1933) continued the Great American Songbook theme, with the arrangements touching on freewheeling Dixieland, vaudeville, and smoky balladry. Wrecking Crew vets such as Glen Campbell, Hal Blaine, Larry Knechtel, Don Randi, Howard Roberts, and Jim Gordon all played on the sessions. Adorned with Ron Joy's now-famous photo of Nancy in a pink bikini, Sugar became her second highest-charted album after her debut, Boots.
Sinatra traveled to Nashville for her next album of 1967, Country, My Way. She cut the LP at RCA's famous Music Row studios, recording with such famed personnel as David Briggs on piano, Buddy Emmons on steel guitar, Charlie McCoy on harmonica, Buddy Harmon on drums, and Chip Young and Wayne Moss on rhythm guitar, and Roy "Junior" Huskey on bass. These Nashville cats were joined by Billy Strange on lead guitar. With producer Hazlewood, Sinatra brought her sensual tones to country melodies by Hank Cochran ("When It's Over"), Bill Anderson ("Get While the Gettin's Good"), and Jean Chapel ("Lay Some Happiness on Me," "Lonely Again"). Lee penned "By the Way (I Still Love You)" and joined Nancy for duets on Billy Edd Wheeler and Jerry Leiber's now-classic "Jackson" and Don Gibson's crossover hit "Oh, Lonesome Me." Nancy and Lee took "Jackson" to No. 14 Pop and No. 39 AC while Johnny and June Carter Cash had the Country hit with it the same year. Country, My Way peaked just three slots out of the top 40 on the U.S. Billboard 200.
The non-LP single sides "In Our Time" and "Leave My Dog Alone" have been added to Sugar, while Country, My Way gains five such singles, including two movie themes: "Love Eyes," "You Only Live Twice," "Lightning's Girl," "Until It's Time for You to Go," and "Tony Rome."
Both Sugar and Country, My Way will arrive from LITA on CD, digitally, and black and limited color vinyl. Sugar is available on "Sugar Town Pink" and "Let's Fall in Love" pink and white swirl; Country, My Way is available on "Bye-Bye Birmingham" blue and "Hello LA" red and white swirl. All formats feature audio remastered from the original tapes by John Baldwin. The vinyl editions have been pressed at RTI and are housed in gatefold jackets with 20-page booklets. The CD and LP booklets boast new interviews between Nancy and reissue producer Hunter Lea, with previously unpublished photos from her archive.

I had heard these were coming. Nice to see it made official. Hopefully, her two remaining Reprise albums will follow.

Nancy's excellent version of Wynn Stewart's hit "It's Such A Pretty World Today" [first track on the Country, My Way album] was recently used as the soundtrack for a Hotels.com TV spot. It took me a couple of listens to realize who the singer was.

That cover!
Conversation with my buddy in Spring 1995:
Me: Robert McNamara is releasing his memoirs saying that the Vietnam War was a mistake and that he knew it all along.
Friend: Wow! I heard that Nancy Sinatra is posing for Playboy.
Me: Now there's two things that are both 30 years too late.

Despite being a very long-time Prince fan, I guess I am getting to be a prude in my old age. Nancy Sinatra was a reasonably talented pop singer. Was it not enough for her voice and a simpler attractive picture (as on the country one) to sell her album? That bikini photo is a bit steamier than it needs to be, though still tame by today's standards, I guess. That must have been something to see on a full 12" X 12" album cover.
