Welcome to another edition of The Weekend Stream, The Second Disc's review of notable catalogue titles (and some new ones, too!) making digital debuts. Elton John's most recent recording gets a remix, plus some rare Prince-produced '90s R&B, a comeback track from one of 2010s pop's most underrated performers, and some Christmas curios you'll have to hear to believe. There's even a tearjerker music video from...Coldplay? Check it all out!
Elton John, "Never Too Late" (Acoustic Version) (Mercury/EMI) (iTunes / Amazon)
Elton's recently released team-up with Brandi Carlile, which closes the documentary of the same name that's now streaming on Disney+, gets a stripped-back remix. Sadly, it may be Elton's sole release for awhile - he recently revealed that he lost most of his vision after contracting an infection earlier this year.
Jevetta Steele, Here It Is (Columbia) (iTunes / Amazon)
Jevetta Steele moved to Minneapolis with intentions of becoming a lawyer; instead, she became an in-demand touring actress and singer, most notably as part of her sibling vocal group The Steeles and as the singer of the Oscar-nominated "Calling You" on the soundtrack to Bagdad Cafe. The Steeles made memorable appearance on much of Prince's early '90s material (including live appearances for 1991's Diamonds and Pearls, his first with The New Power Generation), so it's little surprise that her solo debut featured writing and production from The Purple One on "Hold Me," along with Prince associates like NPG member Levi Seacer, Jr. and Ricky Peterson (brother of St. Paul Peterson, who'd played in The Time before leading side project The Family). Even Maurice White of Earth, Wind & Fire co-produces a track here! Now, the 1993 version of the album - which dropped songs including a few Prince co-writes and a cover of Bacharach and David's "I Say a Little Prayer for You" from a European pressing in 1991, in favor of Prince's "Hold Me" and "Open Book" (an outtake written with Martika) and a few others - is available to stream and download.
Sky Ferreira, "Leash" (A24) (iTunes / Amazon)
Sky Ferreira established one of the best pop discographies of the early 21st century - including her sole full-length, 2013's Night Time, My Time - and then seemingly vanished, with constant rumblings of clashes between the singer and her label Capitol Records. (It got wild enough that fans paid for a plane to fly over Los Angeles in 2023 with a "Free Sky Ferreira" banner.) Now, she's released only her third song since Night Time - not from long-gestating sophomore album Masochism, but a new single to be featured in the A24 thriller Babygirl (featuring a buzzy lead performance from Nicole Kidman). Not only is it a terrific tune (a mix of The Smiths and industrial dance music with a soaring chorus), but it's her first work since extricating herself from her Capitol contract! (She's even done some press on the track and the current status of more music.)
INXS, "By My Side" (The Movie Mix) (Petrol/Atlantic) (iTunes / Amazon)
Another All Juiced Up Part 2 remix! It's always a treat to hear bonus material from the underrated 1990 album X, and this is one such song.
Anaïs Mitchell and Original West End Cast, Hadestown: Live from London (Arts Music/Sing It Again) (iTunes / Amazon)
Hot off the heels of a recent commentary album celebrating the fifth anniversary of the eight-time Tony-winning musical, Anaïs Mitchell's work (still running in New York, and one of the 50 longest-running shows in Broadway history!) is celebrated once more with an electrifying version of the song score recorded live during a performance at the Lyric Theatre in London's West End. It'll be available on CD and several vinyl highlights versions later this month, and is also one of the first West End cast recordings to be available in Dolby Atmos where available.
Oh, are those some new Christmas presents under the tree? Why don't you open 'em?
Mark Mulcahy, Mrs. Claus (Mezzotint) (Bandcamp)
The terrific Miracle Legion/Polaris frontman has a new holiday EP of originals in his own idiosyncratic style available today. Since it's Bandcamp Friday, now is the best possible time to snag your copy; the revenue taken by the indie music service instead goes directly to him and his Mezzotint label.
Columbia Children's Music-Story Group, A Christmas Fantasie (Columbia) (iTunes / Amazon)
Another obscurity from the Sony Music vaults, this family-friendly mix of carols and narration was released on a trio of shellac discs in 1940 - and as campy as it plays, it sounds unbelievably good for its age.
V & Bing Crosby, "White Christmas" (Geffen/UMe/Primary Wave) (iTunes / Amazon)
In the "anything goes" spirit of the season, K-pop star V of BTS fame records a new version of the Irvin Berlin classic, complete with a virtual duet vocal from the most famous voice to ever record the tune.
And one last little treat for the weekend...
Coldplay, "ALL MY LOVE" (Director's Cut) (Parlophone)
For more than two decades, Coldplay have been releasing pleasing pop/rock and quietly serve as one of the most dependable arena draws on the planet (with an admirable commitment toward ecologically sustainable touring, too). For the newest single off this year's Mood Music, the simple piano-led ballad "All My Love" is accompanied by a new video by Spike Jonze and Mary Wigmore that, for whatever reason, serves as a tribute to actor/singer/dancer Dick Van Dyke. The Mary Poppins star movingly recreates some of his old footwork, recounts his storied career (and his thoughts on the twilight of his life - the lucid, limber legend turns 99 this month), and stages a family reunion with his wife, children and grandchildren. If you're a sap like me who adores Van Dyke's work, it'll make you weep...and it's actually a very nice teaser for a review/feature here on The Second Disc next week - one we think you'll find practically perfect in every way!
