Luther Vandross, Never Too Much: Greatest Hits (Epic/Legacy)
2CD: Amazon U.S. / Amazon U.K. / Amazon Canada
2LP: Amazon U.S. / Amazon U.K. / Amazon Canada
In conjunction with a new documentary film, Legacy Recordings issues a new double-disc anthology of the late Luther Vandross' work, accompanied by several rare and unreleased tracks. Never Too Much: Greatest Hits offers 20 tracks on two CDs that represent the cream of Vandross' solo career. In addition to unforgettable hits across the three decades he released albums - including "Never Too Much," "Here and Now," "Power of Love/Love Power," "I'd Rather" and "Dance with My Father" - fans will delight at four rare and unreleased recordings. The first, a cover of The Beatles' "Michelle," was discovered by Vandross' longtime friend and collaborator, vocalist Fonzi Thornton, on a cassette in the late singer's archive, marked only with his name, the title, and a date of June 1, 1989. (A radio edit is exclusive to the 2CD set; the full version will feature on both the CD and double vinyl pressings.) Additional extras include the unissued outtake "Speak Your Love," a new mix of "Never Too Much" by Belgian DJ Lost Frequencies, and a rare radio mix of the song "Get Myself Together," recorded during the Never Too Much sessions in 1979 and released in 2016 on an album by Bronx producer Louie Vega, one half of the Masters At Work remix/production duo. Following last weekend's digital release, it's out today available in CD and vinyl highlights versions, and is also one of the first West End cast recordings to be available in Dolby Atmos where available.
Jason Robert Brown and Stephen Sondheim, Live in Concert (Town Hall: June 24, 2019) (Concord Theatricals) (Amazon U.S. / Amazon U.K. / Amazon Canada)
Earlier this year, Concord dropped a digital surprise from Jason Robert Brown (The Last Five Years, Parade) and the late Stephen Sondheim: a live recording of their one-night-only, sold-out performance at New York City's Town Hall in 2019. Today, it arrives on vinyl (alas, no CD). Joe was lucky enough to attend the evening of conversation and song between two generations of musical theatre tunesmiths, recalling it as an evening of powerful, moving song with plenty of (happy) tears shed. The mutual admiration society of Sondheim and Brown were joined by Lin-Manuel Miranda, Katrina Lenk, Rob McClure, and Joshua Henry-McClure performed his showstopping "I Love Betsy" from Brown's Honeymoon in Vegas score, a favorite of Sondheim's - but Sondheim stole the show with his tender, affecting rendition of "Good Thing Going" from Merrily We Roll Along. He then joined Brown with a reharmonization of the younger composer's "It's Hard to Speak My Heart" from Parade, and the evening fittingly closed with Brown's exciting 'Wait 'Til You See What's Next." What was, in fact, next? For Sondheim, one more score was still in the wings (Here We Are); Brown's latest musical - an adaptation of Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil - arrives on Broadway later this season. This celebratory and reflective evening - Stephen Sondheim's first live album! - makes a poignant coda to his remarkable career.
