Two reissues by Cherry Red, separated by nearly a year, collect the brief but intriguing discography of late-'80s U.K. duo Climie Fisher - including a raft of rare and unreleased bonus material totaling seven discs between them.
The wait is finally over for fans of the group when Climie Fisher's 1987 debut Everything gets a major expansion from the Cherry Pop imprint on March 21. The set features the remastered album and a whopping 51 bonus tracks: versions and remixes of singles "Love Changes (Everything)," "Rise to the Occasion," "I Won't Bleed for You" and "Keeping the Mystery Alive," plus B-sides, unheard demos and six previously unreleased tracks. The set, fully remastered from original tapes in the Universal Music Group vaults, is packaged in a clamshell box with individual disc wallets and a 28-page book featuring full discographical info, rare photos and full album and single credits. It's a perfect companion piece to Cherry Pop's reissue of the group's under-examined sophomore album, 1989's Coming in for the Kill, which was issued last March. That reissue was packaged similarly to the new Everything set, offering the remastered album, remixes, B-sides and demos (14 of which were previously unreleased) across four discs.
Though Climie Fisher may be a less familiar name to all but the most devoted U.K. pop chart-watchers, their collective musical pedigrees, first separately then together, were quite admirable. Rob Fisher, a talented synth player, was known for his lengthy collaboration with fellow Brit Pete Byrne; as students in the University of Bath, they'd first put together the obscure group Neon (best known for also featuring Bath natives Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith, who recruited the group's guitarist and drummer, Neil Taylor and Manny Elias, in the live band for their soon-to-be-famous duo Tears for Fears). More notably, they formed the short-lived duo Naked Eyes, who had little chart success in England but were briefly huge in America thanks to a dramatic Top 10 cover of the Bacharach-David standard "Always Something There to Remind Me" and the simmering original "Promises, Promises," which went to No. 11. Climie, meanwhile, was fast emerging in the mid-'80s as a session musician (he helped Scritti Politti program synths on their breakthrough Cupid & Psyche 85) as well as a songwriter (he'd co-write Pat Benatar's "Invincible" with Holly Knight and, with frequent partner Dennis Morgan, penned "I Knew You Were Waiting (for Me)," a soaring slice of pop-gospel that Aretha Franklin and George Michael took to No. 1 in 1987).
Morgan would, with Climie and Fisher, co-write about half of debut Everything, which split production between two U.K. stalwarts, Stephen Hague (Pet Shop Boys, New Order) and Steve Lillywhite (U2, Simple Minds). Sales of the album were soft until a radically-remixed, hip-hop tinged version of "Rise to the Occasion" created by PWL stalwart Phil Harding hit the U.K. Top 10; a new mix of the swooning soft-rock track "Love Changes (Everything)" in 1988 gave Climie Fisher not only a No. 2 hit in the U.K. but a crossover in America, reaching No. 23 on the Billboard Hot 100.
Bolstered by Everything's success, the duo largely produced 1989's Coming in for the Kill on their own, collaborating with a murderer's row of session legends (including a co-write by Motown icon Lamont Dozier on the title track) and some production assistance from U.S. soul-pop producer Stewart Levine (Simple Minds, Curiosity Killed the Cat) and Neil Dorfsman (Bruce Hornsby & The Range, Paul McCartney). The results, however, were softer than label EMI had hoped for: only lead single "Love Like a River" was a modest Top 40 hit, and the LP only dented the middle of the charts. The duo would split up shortly thereafter: Fisher collaborated in the '90s with Rick Astley and briefly mounted a planned reunion with Byrne for Naked Eyes before his death in 1999 after a surgery to treat cancer; Climie, meanwhile, became an in-demand, cosmopolitan producer - since 1998, he's produced nearly every studio album by Eric Clapton, and also helmed a pair of successful Motown cover albums for Michael McDonald in the 2000s.
Taken together, these nine(!) discs are a real "rise to the occasion" for '80s British pop enthusiasts - and they can now be pre-ordered or purchased at the links below. (As an Amazon affiliate, we earn from qualifying purchases.)
