One of the first big metal debut albums of the 2000s will be expanded for its 25th anniversary: Disturbed's The Sickness.
The Chicago group's breakthrough (previously reissued for its 10th anniversary just around when The Second Disc was getting started!) will be repackaged as a deluxe 3CD/1LP box set featuring seven unheard demos, three soundtrack rarities, a new mix of "Glass Shatters" (a celebrated entrance theme for WWE superstar Stone Cold Steve Austin), and a live bonus disc featuring an unreleased set from The Palladium in Los Angeles recorded in 2001 and two additional bonuses. (A 2CD edition without the live material will also be available.) The included silver vinyl in the box will feature the original album, which will also be pressed on several color variants, including green, orange (exclusively in Europe) and milky clear (as part of Spotify's Fans First initiative). Additional goods in the box include a poster, cloth patch, backstage pass replica, a set of guitar picks, and a collectible book featuring rare photos, memorabilia and new liner notes featuring new interviews with the band and producer Johnny K. (Sales on the band's shop include a signed lithograph, as well.)
The success of The Sickness was a culmination of a few years of the band (guitarist Dan Donegan, bassist Steve Kmak and drummer Mike Wengren - who'd formed a band named Brawl with another vocalist in 1994 - and singer David Draiman, who joined in 1996) pounding the pavement in a city whose local scene focused more on alt-rock acts like the Smashing Pumpkins. Their metal-influenced approach wasn't particularly popular - at least, until the rise of nu-metal groups like Korn and Limp Bizkit as the decade inched closer to its conclusion. Suddenly, the band found themselves with a record deal (from Reprise offshoot Giant Records) and put their well-honed demos into motion with their producer and high school friend Johnny K. The Sickness managed to appeal to mainstream rock fans thanks to its undeniable songcraft on alt-radio hits like "Stupify" and "Down with the Sickness" (featuring Draiman's iconic introductory "Ooh-WAH-AH-AH-AH"), and would ultimately be certified 5x platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America. (The album also featured the band's first of many unexpected covers of pop-friendly songs: a hard-driving, electronic-affected take on Tears for Fears' "Shout." The band just barely missed the U.S. Top 40 in 2015 with their melodramatic take on Simon & Garfunkel's "The Sound of Silence.")
Disturbed - who've since racked up five straight No. 1 albums in America between 2002 and 2015 - will support the reissue of The Sickness with a North American tour that will feature two sets: the original album in full, and a selection of subsequent hits to follow. The new mix of "Glass Shatters" can be heard above, and pre-order links are below. (As an Amazon affiliate, we earn from qualifying purchases.) The sets will be available digitally and from the band's official site on March 7 - the exact anniversary of the album's original release - and will hit general retail two weeks later.
