Echoes Through the Ruins: Pink Floyd's Pompeii Gig to Be Remixed and Reissued

More than half a century after its release, Pink Floyd's arresting 1972 concert film - recorded in the ancient amphitheater of Pompeii - will be revisited as an audio and video product from Legacy Recordings. Pink Floyd At Pompeii - MCMLXXII restores Adrian Maben's original film in 4K quality from recently located original footage, with new audio mixes by Steven Wilson. All versions - a 2CD, a 2LP, a DVD and a Blu-ray - will be released May 2, shortly after public screenings of the film on April 24, set to run in standard theaters and IMAX.

Pompeii - MCMLXXII offers the definitive word on this modestly-known but nonetheless stunning feature, which captured the band - David Gilmour, Roger Waters, Richard Wright and Nick Mason - playing live in the fall of 1971 amid the ruins of Pompeii, the Italian city infamously reduced to ash after the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in 79 A.D. (Maben, who'd been trying to sell the band on a live concert film, got the idea while vacationing in nearby Naples; while attempting to find a dropped passport in Pompeii, he realized the acoustics and ambience made for an appealing venue.) The band, on the precipice of releasing their sixth album Meddle, included that LP's "Echoes" and "One of These Days" along with favorites like "Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun" and "A Saucerful of Secrets." (Additional footage and performances were filmed in nearby Boscoreale and a session in Paris, including "Mademoiselle Nobs," a take on Meddle track "Seamus," both of which were named for the dogs howling in the background of each recording.)

The initial cut, titled Pink Floyd At Pompeii, was released in 1972, but Maben quickly tinkered with it after concerns over its brief running time. A 1974 re-release solved the problem, incorporating 35 millimeter footage Maben captured of the band working at Abbey Road Studios on their bestselling album, 1973's The Dark Side of the Moon. A slightly different version of that later cut was released on DVD in 2002, and the audio from Pompeii (including an alternate take of "Careful with That Axe, Eugene") was included in stereo and 5.1 surround in the 2016 box set The Early Years 1965-1972. Wilson's new mix, as released on CD, adheres to the restored film, adding in the material from Paris that was absent on The Early Years but splitting "Echoes" into two bookending parts. (The audio set, however, will include the alternate "Careful..." and an unreleased extended version of "A Saucerful of Secrets" from the recording.)

The new version of the film is sourced from original negatives of the theatrical cut, located in a mislabeled set of canisters in the band's archive - restored frame by frame, overseen by Lana Topham, the band's director of restoration. "Since 1994, I have searched for the elusive film rushes of Pink Floyd At Pompeii, so the recent discovery of the 1972 original 35mm cut negative was a very special moment," Topham said in a statement. "The newly restored version presents the first full 90-minute cut, combining the 60-minute source edit of the performance with the additional Abbey Road Studios documentary segments filmed shortly after."

The DVD, which also includes a concert-only edit of the film, will include Wilson's remixed audio in uncompressed stereo and Dolby Digital 5.1 surround, while the Blu-ray will include a Dolby TrueHD version of the surround mix (in 96/24 high resolution) as well as an Atmos mix. "I first saw Pompeii from a grainy print at a local cinema," Wilson recalled in his statement. "It was an honour to remix the soundtrack to accompany Lana Topham's incredible restoration of the film, which looks like it could've been filmed yesterday."

All four audio and video versions of the feature are available for pre-order below; as an Amazon affiliate, we earn from qualifying purchases. Tickets to the film screenings will go on sale March 5 at this link.

Nothing to get too excited about. The Early Years compilation was enough.
