Soundtrack Watch: 'Hook,' 'Goofy' and 'Lost' Make Vinyl Appearances in April

March 4, 2025 By Mike Duquette 2 Comments

A Goofy Movie LP

BUY NOW FROM AMAZON.COM

Fans of soundtrack reissues on vinyl have three very different titles to potentially look forward to in April: a mid-'90s Disney animated flick, a crown jewel in John Williams' discography, an a beloved television work from one of today's most prolific film composers.

Walt Disney's major motion picture event of 1995 was Pocahontas, a fairly dramatized tale of Native Americans in the early colonial days - but it was neither their only animated feature of the year nor, retrospectively, the most treasured by fans. That honor might go to A Goofy Movie, an unassuming continuation of the Saturday morning cartoon Goof Troop. Once again, audiences catch up with Max, a well-rounded teen trying to date his dream girl and dealing with his biggest humiliation: his bumbling, accident-prone dad Goofy - a staple of Disney's animated fare since the early '30s. When Goofy spontaneously plans a road trip to bond with his son, Max lies to his would-be girlfriend Roxanne that he's going to meet Powerline, the hottest pop act around; the ensuing adventure is a surprisingly touching affair that'll still make you holler with laughter.

Though A Goofy Movie was met with relative indifference by critics on its initial theatrical release, it was a runaway success on video - and fans really came to enjoy the songs, particularly the catchy R&B/pop of Powerline, whose singing voice was provided by Tevin Campbell. ("I 2 I" and "Stand Out" were both produced and mixed by David Z - brother of Prince and The Revolution drummer Bobby Z - and the former features distinct counter vocals from Rosie Gaines of Prince and The New Power Generation; given one of Campbell's breakout appearances was on the soundtrack to 1990's Graffiti Bridge, it isn't hard to imagine that the team intended these songs to pay homage to the Minneapolis legend as much as possible.) A few songs were sung by Max and Goofy for dramatic impact, including the jaunty "On the Open Road," and the original soundtrack was rounded out by score cues by Carter Burwell, best known for his work with the Coen brothers. (Burwell later noted that his Americana-tinged arrangements were replaced at the studio's behest by fuller orchestrations courtesy of composer Don Davis.)

Released as a picture disc a decade ago, the soundtrack to A Goofy Movie will now be available as a special collector's edition with new artwork and a collectible sticker sheet featuring favorite characters from the movie. U.S. pressings will be offered on black and white splatter vinyl, while customers outside America have the chance to get it on orange vinyl. It'll be available April 11 in the States and a week later around the world.

Hook MOV LP

BUY NOW FROM AMAZON.COM

Soundtrack fans in 2023 thrilled to La-La Land Records' expansion of John Williams' grandiose score to the Steven Spielberg fantasy Hook - and now, Music on Vinyl will put the original album back on LP. The tale of a workaholic lawyer (Robin Williams) who has to save his crumbling family by embracing his past identity as the real-life basis for J.M. Barrie's Peter Pan and squaring off against a vengeful Captain Hook (Dustin Hoffman) was wrongly perceived as a big budget flop in 1991, and the film's tone influenced a generation of family entertainment (chiefly the film adaptations of the Harry Potter book series). And it's one of Williams' greatest scores for a Spielberg film, overflowing with lyrical, hummable themes - several of which were earmarked for lyrics by Leslie Bricusse for the closest the director would get to a musical for much of his career. (In the end, only the Oscar-nominated "When You're Alone" became a song of its own, and Spielberg would finally put his stamp on Hollywood musicals with a dazzling 2021 version of West Side Story.) Previously released with unique cover art and a fresh remaster by Mondo, this new pressing restores the original cover art (utilizing a classic teaser poster image by illustrator John Alvin) on a deluxe sleeve with laminated leather finish. The album, available April 25, is presented on double 180-gram, translucent red vinyl and limited to 2000 individually numbered copies.

Lost S2 LP

BUY NOW FROM AMAZON.COM

Finally, Varese Sarabande will present a special double LP pressing of music from the second season of the popular sci-fi/drama Lost. Created by J.J. Abrams, Jeffrey Lieber and Damon Lindelof, this watercooler smash ran for six seasons on the ABC network and followed the survivors of a plane crash on a mysterious South Pacific island and the increasingly convoluted mythology around their fates. The show won 11 Emmy Awards during its run, including one for series composer Michael Giacchino, who'd worked with Abrams on the spy drama Alias and, in 2004 (the same year Lost premiered) made a splashy leap toward the top of the film composer A-list with a score for the Disney/Pixar blockbuster The Incredibles. His dramatic themes (and increasing knack for cue titles that use puns and begin with the phrase "World's Worst...") are on full display in this second album of music from the series. It's pressed on thematically appropriate "black smoke" color vinyl, and packed in a gatefold jacket with liner notes from the composer. This set is limited to 1000 copies and also hits stores on April 25.

I’m nitpicking, but I’d argue Disney animation fans treasure 1995’s Toy Story even more than Pocahontas or A Goofy Movie.

If I can nitpick your nitpick, I consider TOY STORY a Pixar film first and foremost, but then again, I treasure all three of those films! 🙂
