A deluxe edition of Status Quo's first concert album will pair the original album - never a favorite of the band's leader - with the full, newly-remixed shows that it was assembled from.
1977's Live! found the Quo's "Frantic Four" - vocalists/guitarists Francis Rossi and Rick Parfitt, bassist Alan Lancaster and drummer John Coghlan (plus longtime touring keyboardist (and future full-time member) Andy Bown and tour manager Bob Young on harmonica) - wowing crowds over three nights at the Apollo in Glasgow, Scotland at the end of October 1976. The boogie rockers, touring in support of ninth album (and third U.K. chart-topper) Blue for You (1976), treated fans to renditions of some of their recent hits, including "Rain," "Caroline" and "Roll Over Lay Down," plus a lengthy version of fan favorite "Forty-Five Hundred Times" and even a few choice covers of The Doors ("Roadhouse Blues") and Chuck Berry ("Bye Bye Johnny").
While Live! gave the group another U.K. Top 5 album, its sound quality (recorded by the Rolling Stones Mobile Studio truck) had always been a particular sticking point for Rossi. "There are absolutely no overdubs on that album," he later said. "Nothing other than what we actually put out there on stage at the time. We wanted to prove we weren't like the others: we weren't cheating. But every time I listen to it now...I sit here cringing, thinking, 'I wish we'd put fucking overdubs on.'" Despite his opinion, the album sat high on British publication Classic Rock magazine's list of the best live albums of all time (clocking in at No. 6) and has been reissued before, with a slightly re-organized track list and offerings of contemporaneous live material from other countries.
Edsel has taken a new approach for this release: working with the band and engineer Andy Gamble at AVP Productions, the newly-expanded Live! pairs a remaster of the original album with the three Glasgow shows (each with identical set lists) - all sourced from newly-discovered multi-tracks of the concerts. These fresh new mixes have given Rossi (who still tours with the Quo to this day) the chance to hear the material to his satisfaction, and this new set bears his figurative stamp of approval.
The newly expanded Live! is packaged in a 7" box set with a booklet that includes photos, memorabilia and new liner notes by both Dave Ling of Classic Rock and Gamble, who dives deep on the restoration process. It hits stores on May 16, and will be preceded by a 2LP release (on mint and blue vinyl) of the first night at the Apollo on October 27, 1976, as a U.K.-exclusive title at participating Record Store Day shops on April 12. Naturally, a subjective opinion and perfect example of 'to each his own' BUT...considering this represents the single greatest live album of ALL TIME (see what I did there?), even though Thin Lizzy and UFO and Humble Pie and so on and so forth are all trying to say 'hold my beer,' but nevertheless failing (upwards, at least), GREAT GREAT news and I am so there on day ONE.
