Fans making the pilgrimage to next month's Star Wars Celebration event in Japan can keep an eye out for a new box set fitting in perfectly with the country's commitment to music on CD.
Available in limited quantities during the event at Makuhari Messe in Chiba City, Star Wars Celebration Japan 2025: Original Soundtrack Box Set brings together scores from 23 films and television series in the universe created by writer/director George Lucas, with exclusively designed artwork. While none of the material is previously unreleased, roughly half the material has never been released on CD before, making for the most comprehensive and diverse listen to how the sound of a galaxy far, far away has evolved over nearly 50 years.
The box will include the original soundtrack releases to the original Star Wars trilogy released between 1977 and 1983; Lucas' prequel trilogy from 1999 to 2005; and a new generation of sequel trilogy from 2015 to 2019 - all composed and conducted by film score legend John Williams. (The original and prequel trilogy soundtracks utilize remixes of the original vinyl album programs released in 2018, created from the original film session masters by Williams' longtime engineer Shawn Murphy.) The Maestro's influence (and occasional input) is heard in the rest of the material in the set - mostly films and series commissioned after The Walt Disney Company purchased Lucasfilm in 2012 - including the spin-off films Rogue One and Solo; animated series like The Clone Wars, Rebels, The Bad Batch, Visions, Tales of the Jedi and Tales of the Empire; and a crop of live-action series set in the Star Wars universe including The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Andor, Ahsoka and The Acolyte. Each album will be packaged in 7" paper sleeves with newly designed cover art based on the original posters and key art - all housed in a deluxe box featuring the Celebration Japan key art. (Additionally, limited quantities of the original soundtracks to Star Wars (1977) and The Empire Strikes Back (1980) will be pressed on red and blue vinyl, with jackets replicating original Japanese poster art and wrapped with an obi.)
Lucas, a filmmaker who co-founded American Zoetrope with Francis Ford Coppola and enjoyed an unlikely blockbuster with the impressionistic period piece American Graffiti (1973), adored the Flash Gordon serials of his youth and was profoundly inspired by the work of Joseph Campbell, who studied and interpreted myth and religion across cultures and published some of his finding in 1949's The Hero with a Thousand Faces. Lucas' sprawling treatment about a small but devoted rebellion against a malevolent Galactic Empire, and the quests of the Jedi Knights (warrior monks who tapped into a mystical energy known as "The Force") underwent many permutations before cameras rolled on Star Wars (later subtitled A New Hope), ultimately casting the likes of Mark Hamill (the heroic Luke Skywalker), Carrie Fisher (the rebellious Princess Leia), Harrison Ford (the roguish Han Solo) and Alec Guinness (the wise Jedi Obi-Wan Kenobi).
With a $10 million budget spent on sets in England and a location shoot in the deserts of northern Africa, few had high hopes for the commercial viability of the film, even with an array of groundbreaking special effects by Lucas' company Industrial Light & Magic. The film opened in just 25 theaters on May 25, 1977 - but word of mouth grew and grew, and within a year the film overtook Steven Spielberg's JAWS as the highest-grossing film of all time. Spielberg, a longtime friend of Lucas, was convinced of Star Wars success from the outset, and enthusiastically suggested the hiring of John Williams, a fresh Oscar winner for JAWS, to compose the score for the space opera. Drawing from inspirations like Holst, Wagner, Korngold and even Benny Goodman - not to mention a sterling performance by the London Symphony Orchestra - Williams' Star Wars score became a crucial part of the series' mythology and the pop cultural firmament, ushering in a new generation of symphonic soundtracks and even spinning off two U.S. Top 10 hits: the bold "Main Title" theme, and a disco arrangement of motifs by Domenico "Meco" Monardo that became an unlikely No. 1 smash.
Williams would win his third career Oscar for Star Wars, and would build upon his work with a stunning catalogue of themes and motifs through the rest of the series. The original trilogy continued with The Empire Strikes Back (1980) and Return of the Jedi (1983), co-written and produced by Lucas and featuring original themes for the villainous Darth Vader, the enchanting Jedi master Yoda, a torrid romantic theme for Han Solo and Princess Leia, the crime lord Jabba the Hutt, the wicked galactic Emperor Palpatine, the village of furry Ewoks on the forest moon of Endor, and much more. Empire won Williams a Grammy Award and a BAFTA, and both sequels were nominated at the Academy Awards.
After the trilogy was re-released in 1997 with additional footage and new digital effects from Industrial Light & Magic, production began on Lucas' prequel trilogy (which he wrote and directed), depicting the rise of the Empire over a war-torn interplanetary Republic and how Luke's father Anakin was tempted to the dark side of The Force and helped eliminate the Jedi as Darth Vader. Critics and fans in the early Internet age were more divided on the creative direction of The Phantom Menace (1999), Attack of the Clones (2002) and Revenge of the Sith (2005) - but a returning Williams conducting the LSO was one of the series' brightest spots, thanks to rousing themes like "Duel of the Fates," "Across the Stars" and "Battle of the Heroes."
Lucas scaled back his loose plans to create a nine-film series after that, but did produce a 2008 computer-animated series set between Clones and Sith and depicting the legendary Clone Wars that set the Star Wars galaxy to turmoil. The creator selected Dave Filoni, a director on the animated hit Avatar: The Last Airbender, to oversee The Clone Wars and composer Kevin Kiner, a television vet on Walker: Texas Ranger, Star Trek: Enterprise and CSI: Miami, built on Williams' themes and supplied stirring original motifs of his own. Filoni and Kiner's work would help usher in a new era of Star Wars and became the glue for what came next: a purchase of Lucasfilm by Disney and a tidal wave of new films and TV shows.
Star Wars media practically tripled in the Disney era. Williams returned to score the third Star Wars trilogy, set decades after Return of the Jedi and featuring a new generation of heroes mentored by the old guard when the New Republic was threatened by a new evil organization known as the First Order. The Force Awakens (2015), co-written and directed by J.J. Abrams; The Last Jedi (2017), written and directed by Rian Johnson; and The Rise of Skywalker (2019), co-written and directed by Abrams again, were immense blockbusters but perhaps even more divisive than the prequels. (A vocal contingent of fans hated the bold, expectation-defying Last Jedi, and The Rise of Skywalker, featuring a performance by the late Carrie Fisher built from outtake footage and a revived-from-the-dead Palpatine, seemed to appeal to no one.) But Williams' work ethic and investment in new and old themes (including an inspiring motif for the new heroine Rey, played by Daisy Ridley) could not be denied, and the scores established and extended the composer's status as the living person with the most Oscar nominations (and second only to Disney himself).
Disney wasted no time in establishing a new "expanded universe" of extracurricular media, having relegated decades of novels, comics and short stories to non-canon status. The studio began ambitiously planning spin-off films set during other eras of the story: 2016's Rogue One showcased the Rebel Alliance's "first victory against the evil Galactic Empire" (alluded to in Star Wars' opening text crawl), while 2018's Solo featured Alden Ehrenreich as a younger version of Harrison Ford's space smuggler. Both were shaped by creative shake-ups including rewrites and reshoots (Solo directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller were fired during production, with Ron Howard stepping in as a replacement); Rogue One was a critical and commercial success, while Solo was the first box-office bomb in Star Wars history. Nonetheless, both featured winning scores by two disciples of Williams: Up and Jurassic World composer Michael Giacchino for Rogue One, and The Bourne Identity and How to Train Your Dragon composer John Powell for Solo. (Williams also contributed an original theme for Solo, having never written a proper motif for the character.)
Perhaps as a result of the challenges of latter-day Star Wars at the multiplex, Disney focused future stories on the small screen, especially in light of the company's Disney+ streaming service which launched in 2019. Kevin Kiner scored four seasons of the Disney Channel animated series Rebels from 2014 to 2018, featuring another faction of Rebels set five years before the original Star Wars film. The fan favorite show brought back characters like Ahsoka Tano, Anakin Skywalker's exiled Jedi protégeé from The Clone Wars, and even cameos from James Earl Jones as the voice of Darth Vader. He would return for several more series, including one final season of The Clone Wars in 2020 (after a six-year absence from the airwaves), the Clone Wars spinoff The Bad Batch (2021-2024) and the series Tales of the Jedi and Tales of the Empire, a pair of limited series set in the prequel trilogy era that aired in 2022 and 2024.
But some of the biggest moves were made in live-action television. The Disney+ series The Mandalorian, created by Elf and Iron Man director Jon Favreau, follows a bounty hunter from the same planet as the original trilogy's mysterious Boba Fett and his galactic misadventures guarding an infant alien with Force sensitivities in the aftermath of the Empire's fall in Return of the Jedi. The show ran for three seasons (plus a spin-off, The Book of Boba Fett, taking place between the latter two seasons), and a feature film is expected to conclude the story in 2026. The memorable theme and score was written by Ludwig Goransson, a composer for the cult comedy series Community, the Oscar-winning Marvel film Black Panther and the Rocky spin-off trilogy Creed; the Swedish composer took home two Emmys for his work on the show, and collaborated with composer Kevin Shirley on Boba Fett and the third season of The Mandalorian.
The live-action series' swings got bigger and bigger. A limited series depicting Obi-Wan Kenobi's exile between the original and prequel trilogies - with Ewan MacGregor reprising his role from the prequels - aired in 2022 and featured a new theme by Williams. (Williams' longtime collaborator William Ross and composer Natalie Holt handled the bulk of the underscore.) That same year, Andor - a gritty lead-in to Rogue One that critics and audiences viewed as a parable to real-world political challenges - became one of Star Wars' most acclaimed works in the Disney era, earning eight Emmy nominations, including Outstanding Drama Series and two nods for the show's composer Nicholas Britell, best known for his work on HBO's Succession. (A second and final season premieres just after this year's Celebration.) Filoni's steady hand in animation soon gave way to the live-action Ahsoka, continuing from both Rebels and The Mandalorian. (Kiner returned to score this series, which premiered in 2023 and is expected to get another season.)
The saga's most ambitious TV works, though, might be the multi-season animated anthology Visions - featuring esoteric galactic stories created by animation houses from South America, Europe, Africa and Asia - and The Acolyte, a one-season 2024 series set a century before The Phantom Menace. (Multiple composers - from a host of Japanese musicians in the first season and eccentric luminaries in the second like producer Daniel Lopatin, better known as Oneohtrix Point Never, contributed to Visions, while Michael Abels, longtime composer for the films of Jordan Peele, handled musical duties for the underrated The Acolyte.)
