After years of reissues and remixes from hard-rockers Whitesnake at Rhino Records, you'd be forgiven for wondering what the label could still do with David Coverdale's catalogue. That question is now answered with a box set assembling remastered editions of five latter-day live records.
Access All Areas: Live, available April 25, is an 8CD collection offering sets recorded between 2004 and 2015 and released over the last two decades. The albums featured are Live...In the Still of the Night (2005), the double albums Live...In the Shadow of the Blues (2006); Made in Japan (2013) and Made in Britain/The World Record (2013), and 2018's The Purple Tour. The set will also include a 60-page hardcover book and a poster, and Live...In the Still of the Night will also make its bow as a double vinyl set.
After a period of inactivity following the release of 1997's Restless Heart (initially intended for release as a Coverdale solo project), the singer reactivated Whitesnake with the intentions of celebrating the group's 25th anniversary. In doing so, he recruited almost an entirely new line-up of stellar rock musicians: guitarists Doug Aldrich and Reb Beach had been members of Dio and Winger, respectively; keyboardist Timothy Drury had notched tours with Don Henley and the Eagles; and the rhythm section, bassist Marco Mendoza and Tommy Aldridge, had recently performed the same duties for Thin Lizzy. (Aldridge, of course, had already served as the band's drummer before in the wake of their success following "Here I Go Again" in 1987. Mendoza had come by the Lizzy gig after working in Blue Murder with guitarist John Sykes, who'd also been a crucial member of Whitesnake before, and briefly considered rejoining for this outing.) A well-attended homecoming show at the Hammersmith Apollo in London formed the basis for the first album of Whitesnake's return: Live...In the Still of the Night was primarily released on DVD but featured a 10-track CD in some copies of highlighted hits from the show, including "Here I Go Again," "Is This Love," "Still of the Night," "Ain't No Love in the Heart of the City" and more.
The group continued to tour with minor line-up shifts throughout the decade. Live...in the Shadow of the Blues, recorded on a 2006 world tour, subbed Mendoza for new bassist Uriah Duffy; this line-up recorded several studio tracks that were appended to this original album but not included here. The line-up would shift through the rest of the decade and record two studio albums, and by the time they undertook a tour of Japan in 2011 that was chronicled two years later on the Made in Japan album, the band was comprised of Coverdale, Aldrich, and Beach with keyboardist Brian Ruedy and rhythm section Michael Devin (bass) and Brian Tichy (drums). (Live in Japan differentiates itself from other live sets in Access All Areas by including some soundcheck performances.) This line-up featured on another album from other dates on the same tour: Made in Britain/The World Record, a 2CD set with each disc featuring recordings respectively recorded in England and elsewhere (the latter disc also featuring some acoustic tracks).
By the time Coverdale and Whitesnake ended a four-year gap between studio albums with 2015's The Purple Album - a tribute to the singer's breakthrough time as the frontman for Deep Purple - the band line-up would change once more: Aldridge returned to the drum kit and guitarist Aldrich departed, with Joel Hoesktra - a touring member of Trans-Siberian Orchestra - taking his place. Keyboardist Michelle Luppi was added for The Purple Tour, and she (along with Beach, Hoekstra and Aldridge) remain in Whitesnake's line-up today. The inclusion of that live set brings Access All Areas both full circle through Coverdale's singing career, and closes out the box set's contents.
