Dionne Warwick Make It Easy on Yourself

BUY NOW FROM CHERRY RED

"I am so very thrilled about this wonderful collection of my recordings! It is truly something that I myself would buy." - Dionne Warwick, 2025

For more than six decades, Dionne Warwick has been synonymous with musical excellence.  The six-time Grammy Award winner, 2024 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, and Kennedy Center Honoree remains one of the most-charted vocalists of all time, with a whopping 56 singles having made the Billboard Hot 100 between 1962 and 1998 and over 100 million records sold worldwide.  The New Jersey-born legend became the first black female solo recording artist in the mid-'60s to achieve international breakthrough success (in particular in the U.K. and Europe) with her elegant and distinctive blend of pop and soul, resulting in timeless classics such as "Walk on By," "I Say a Little Prayer," "Alfie" "Don't Make Me Over," and her original version of "Anyone Who Had A Heart."  Dionne is making music on the concert stage and in the studio today, building on the extraordinary career that first began at the feisty New York independent label Scepter Records.  Now, the remarkable body of work created by Dionne at Scepter in tandem with the songwriting-production team of Burt Bacharach and Hal David is receiving its most comprehensive collection ever.

SoulMusic Records and Second Disc Records are proud to present Dionne Warwick's Make It Easy on Yourself: The Scepter Recordings 1962-1971, a 12CD box set with 280 tracks encompassing every original Scepter album and single release plus over 60 rare bonus tracks - 16 of which are previously unreleased (both in the studio and in concert) - for a total of over 14 hours of music.  The box set is due on June 27.

Housed in a lavish slipcase, Make It Easy on Yourself: The Scepter Recordings 1962-1971 includes the following albums in their original stereo presentations:

  • PRESENTING DIONNE WARWICK (1963);
  • ANYONE WHO HAD A HEART (1964);
  • MAKE WAY FOR DIONNE WARWICK (1964);
  • THE SENSITIVE SOUND OF DIONNE WARWICK (1965);
  • HERE I AM (1965);
  • HERE WHERE THERE IS LOVE (1965);
  • DIONNE WARWICK IN PARIS (1966);
  • ON STAGE & IN THE MOVIES (1967);
  • THE WINDOWS OF THE WORLD (1967);
  • VALLEY OF THE DOLLS (1968);
  • THE MAGIC OF BELIEVING (1968);
  • PROMISES, PROMISES (1968);
  • SOULFUL (1969);
  • I'LL NEVER FALL IN LOVE AGAIN (1970);
  • VERY DIONNE (1970);
  • THE DIONNE WARWICKE STORY: A DECADE OF GOLD (1971); and
  • FROM WITHIN (1972).

Additionally, the exclusive bonus disc ALWAYS SOMETHING THERE: LIVE & STUDIO GEMS FROM THE SCEPTER VAULTS boasts 25 rarities from the superstar.  This disc premieres a lost 1969 concert from Washington, DC as well as never-before-heard alternate takes of "Don't Say I Didn't Tell You So," "Who Gets the Guy," "Walk the Way You Talk," "We've Only Just Begun," and more.  This disc also presents the long-awaited CD debuts of the film soundtrack versions of "He's Moving On" and "Amanda" from the film The Love Machine (as well as the unique single versions of both songs); and Dionne's rare duet of Bacharach and David's "Try to See It My Way" with Tony Award winner and Deadpool and Wolverine star Leslie Uggams.

Dionne PackshotWhile the songs of Bacharach and David including the Grammy-winning "Do You Know the Way to San Jose" and I'll Never Fall in Love Again" form the cornerstone of Warwick's Scepter discography, this set also shines a spotlight on the remarkable string of concept albums in which she brought her own stamp to the songs of Broadway and Hollywood (On Stage and in the Movies), the gospel songbook (The Magic of Believing), and the contemporary R&B repertoire (Soulful).  Among the 60+ bonus tracks spread across the 12 discs of Make It Easy on Yourself are additional, previously unreleased live performances from Dionne's landmark 1966 concerts at the Paris Olympia.  Her complete 1970 Garden State Arts Center concert has also been fully restored with previously unavailable material as part of the expanded Decade of Gold.  The numerous alternate takes throughout offer fresh insight into Warwick's recording process with Bacharach and David.

This set has been produced by Joe Marchese (of The Second Disc) and Jim Pierson, and executive-produced by The British Ambassador of Soul, David Nathan.  The lavish 68-page booklet features a 12,000-word essay by Marchese, drawing on previously unpublished interviews with Dionne Warwick and the late Burt Bacharach.  The booklet also features a moving personal reflection from Nathan, and an appreciation of Dionne's groundbreaking The Magic of Believing by gospel and soul historian Tim Dillinger of God's Music Is My Life.  The booklet is copiously illustrated with numerous photos as well as album artwork.  Each disc is housed within the slipcase in an individual wallet with detailed discographical annotations.

The box has been beautifully designed by John Sellards with an eye to period detail, and all tracks have been newly mastered for this collection by Nick Robbins.  Make It Easy on Yourself: The Scepter Recordings 1962-1971 follows SoulMusic Records' previous pair of Dionne Warwick box sets, Sure Thing: The Warner Bros. Recordings 1972-1977 and Déjà Vu: The Arista Recordings 1979-1994, completing the label's definitive survey of Warwick's first three decades-plus of recording.

Produced with the cooperation of Miss Warwick, Make It Easy on Yourself: The Scepter Recordings 1962-1971 is the most comprehensive look to date at the recordings which form the foundation of the artist's remarkable and still-thriving career.  You'll find the complete track listing and pre-order links below.  TSD thanks our readers for your support; unfortunately, Amazon links aren't yet active, but we didn't want to wait any longer in sharing this news with you!  We'll update this article as soon as links become available.  Make It Easy on Yourself is due June 27 from SoulMusic Records and Second Disc Records!

    Missing are the mono versions that are on the Japanese remasters but that would probably mean a bigger box!

      Yes, including the mono versions would have pushed the disc count up considerably, rendering the set financially unfeasible. But for the fans of those mixes who don't have the Japanese CDs, I wholeheartedly recommend Real Gone Music's recent set of Dionne's complete (mono!) singles as a worthwhile companion to this collection.

        Hi Joe, I have that box and 4 Japanese Remasters but the prices of those cds are very high these days so that will probably be the only few I will obtain.
        BTW: thanks for all your work, I love to read your liner notes.

          Thanks for the kind words, Robbert. Having commentary from both Dionne and Burt for this upcoming set made the liner notes a true pleasure to write.

    Whew! You must be exhausted Joe! This is quite the comprehensive set. As I was scanning the titles, I didn't see Slaves , the single/ title song from the movie. Did I just miss it?
    I'm not a huge Dionne fan, but there's no denying that the group of albums from On Stage and In the Movies through Very Dionne are superb. The Promises,Promises album is my favorite.
    Kudos on this project, Joe!!

      Thanks, Harry! Those late-period albums are just gorgeous. Revisiting them has been a tremendous pleasure and privilege. "Slaves" is the last track on CD 7.

    I didn't see it listed....

    I quite literally just ordered and received the mono singles collection the week before last, and even that feels like a lot of duplication from the two old Rhino comps ('All-Time GH' and 'Hidden Gems') and 'From the Vaults,' but it felt easy to justify due to the mono mixes. Not sure I can justify getting this new box, although it's very tempting! My main interest is in the Bacharach/David songs – a three- or four-disc Warwick/Bacharach/David Scepter box would be an instant buy.

    In early 1964, I was standing at the record counter for buying 45's.

    I was torn between buying "Just Like Romeo and Juliette" and "Walk On By". I could only afford one record.

    A very pretty girl, a year older than me, said, "You have to buy Walk On By!"

    I looked at her and the choice was clear.

    That day has brought me here, pre-ordering this as soon as possible.

    Congratulations, Joe, for your work to share this with us.

    Joe, my man!

    I have been a fan and have followed Dionne's career since the very beginning, when I was a teenager (I am 78 now), and I own just about everything that she has recorded, with only a few exceptions. From that mighty compilation that you have created, there are only three songs listed that I do not have: her duet of "They Don't Give Medals to Yesterday's Heroes" with B.J. Thomas, "Try to See It My Way" with Leslie Uggams (Where did that come from? I was not aware of its existence), and her French rendition of "Reach Out for Me" ("L'Amour Supplie").

    But I also have one from the Scepter years that you may not know about, as it has never appeared on any commercial recording. Do you know about the duet Dionne recorded with Chuck Jackson entitled "If I Let Myself Go"? They must have done it during a recording session--maybe the same time they did "Anything That You Can Do"--but it was never put on an album. I obtained it quite unknowingly. I was attending a music convention in 1995 in Philadelphia to promote my just-released first solo album, "Out Here On My Own"--yes, I am a singer/recording artist myself--and some guy there just gave me this cassette tape. I didn't even know what was on it, and it turned out to be the aforementioned song. I knew who it was right away, as the voices were unmistakable. I don't know where that guy got it or if there are other copies around somewhere, but it is a rarity nonetheless. I don't know who else has it or even knows about it besides me.

    I also am a fanatic for Burt Bacharach and have practically everything of his that is available on record.

      Mea maxima culpa! I guess I spoke too soon. I just googled "If I Let Myself Go" to find out who wrote it, and I was taken right to YouTube. There the song is right there! I had no idea. The post is dated 1998, however, but I obtained it three years before that, so it was indeed an afterthought. Even so, the song is not on any album of theirs, but at least now it is accessible to the public. So, maybe you already did know about it?

        Hi Cliff, great story! The track actually was a reunion between Dionne and Chuck, and was first released in 1997, though the CD single didn't get a lot of publicity or distribution. It's remained under the radar for all of these years:
        https://www.discogs.com/release/7240932-Chuck-Jackson-Dionne-Warwick-If-I-Let-Myself-Go

        It would be a great candidate for a Dionne rarities collection!

        I think you'll love Leslie and Dionne's "Try to See It My Way" as well as the B.J. duet of "Yesterday's Heroes." They're both Warwick, Bacharach, and David at their finest. The alternate takes were also a real thrill to discover..."Who Gets the Guy" is my personal favorite. 🙂 Hope you enjoy the box!

          Joe, I assume that you have a personal relationship with Dionne, since you said that you worked on the compilation set together. I have a question that I have not been able to find the answer to, so I would like to go right to the source. This is pertaining to the upcoming divas "Queens Tour" with Gladys Knight, Patti LaBelle, Chaka Khan and Stephanie Mills. Excuse me. but why is our girl Dionne not included? She must have been considered. Maybe she is not up to the task vocally, perhaps? I don't want to speculate, is why I would like you to ask her directly what the true T is.

          Incidentally, I discovered that I do have Dionne's French version of "Reach Out for Me," but I have it with a different title ("Amour Sublime"), which is why I didn't see it under the other title.

          Thank you for whatever you can find out about my query.

            Hi Cliff,

            I don't have any information at this time about the tour, but Dionne has a number of solo dates long-booked and scheduled through this fall, so it's very possible that she was invited and just couldn't make it work with her calendar. She is, and will always be, a Queen!

            Yes...in the time between the release of ODDS AND ENDS and the upcoming box set, we learned that the actual title of the track was "L'amour Supplie," not "Amour Sublime," hence the change was made. A fun recording by any name!

              Thanks, Joe. That makes a lot of sense, that she will be otherwise engaged. At least our girl is still working. Thanks for clearing up the song title change, too. That explains it.

      Hi, Cliff - I am the same age as you (78) - and have also been a huge Bacharach/Warwick fan since buying the 45rpm single of “Walk on By” way back when. And like you, I think I have most of what Dionne has recorded over the years - and also nearly all of Burt Bacharach’s output as well. I remember getting his autograph on my early Warwick albums when he was doing the conducting/arranging for the great Marlene Dietrich on her UK tours in 1964 and 1965. I chatted to both of them at the stage door of the Lyceum theatre in Edinburgh, where she was performing her one-woman show at the Edinburgh Festival. One of the highlights of my life! I have just preordered this set as well - I still think her early Scepter discs were the best things she has done. That voice!

        Hi, Alistair!
        You sound like a man after my own heart. I would love to meet you and compare notes. I have some Dionne and Burt encounter stories as well. Where do you live currently? Are you still in Scotland? I live in New York City (Manhattan). We can write to each other at least. How can we obtain correspondence information? Thanks for reaching out anyway.

    And to add an unrelated item to my previous comment: I have an album titled “Memories of the Cow Palace” ((copyright 1983 Vault Records: distributed by Rhino Records Inc. in the US) which has a live performance of Dionne singing “Don’t Make Me Over” (3:20) among other performers (Righteous Brothers, The Ronettes, Dee Dee Sharp etc) and is something I have never seen released on CD. As the sleeve notes say: “Much credit for the excellent musical performances must go to guest conductor Phil Spector”. What a combination - Dionne and the Wall of Sound producer!

    I'll definitely buy this set. And yet . . . I really wish the set had conisisted of the individual albums as mono/stereo two-fers along with a few bonus discs of non-album tracks. Perhaps if this sells well, they'll consider releasinga a mono album collection.

      Hi David, thanks for your support of this release. Unfortunately, it would have been prohibitively expensive to include both the mono and stereo mixes of each album, especially when there were so many bonus tracks (both previously released and unreleased) available for inclusion. I hope you're pleased with the set, nonetheless. As for a mono albums collection, anything's possible!

    I’m only seeing this now, most excellent and beautiful news! I have no doubt that this release will reflect your combined expertise and TLC, most welcome! So happy to hear that Ms. Warwick, and even the, sadly, late, Burt Bacharach were available to contribute. Thanks also for explaining some of the economical givens; I have full understanding. This will still be a milestone and stand the test of time. I so look forward to the unreleased tracks, including alternate takes. I’m a sucker for those, as they can provide so much insight into the process, what they weren’t sure of at the time, and what was already a given. This is a release that I look forward to, thanks to you all, and particularly to you, Joe!
