Our friends at Iconoclassic Records are teeing up a prolific 2025 following their release earlier in the year of Dwight Twilley's Scuba Divers: Blueprint Edition. On April 25, the label will bring the late Ian North's 1979 album Neo to CD for the first time; that's followed on May 16 with David Sancious' 1981 set The Bridge. Then, on May 30, comes the Original Master Edition of Natural Gas' self-titled album - a fitting salute to the band's late Joey Molland.
Brooklyn-born Ian North (1952-2021) rose to prominence in power pop band Milk 'n Cookies, earning a contract with Island Records. After Island delayed their record, however, the group split up. North stayed in London and formed a new band which evolved into the group called, first, Ian North's Radio and, then, Neo. It was a tumultuous time, however, with multiple lineup changes taking place over a short period of time. In 1979, the Neo album was released as a solo Ian North LP - appropriately enough, since the frontman wrote and produced it. Neo was recorded at Ian Gillan's studio, and the Deep Purple singer poached North's bandmates Steve Byrd (guitar) and John McCoy (bass) to serve as part of the band Gillan. Drummer Bryson Graham is also featured on Neo. Originally released on the independent Aura label, Neo blended North's melodic sensibility with edgy lyrics, for a provocative spin on new wave/post-punk. Iconoclassic's official CD premiere adds two tracks recorded at The Vortex in London from the 1977 Live at the Vortex compilation LP. Vic Anesini has newly remastered the audio from the original master tapes, and the 16-page color booklet boasts new liner notes from Ian North's Milk 'n Cookies bandmate Justin Strauss.
Back in 2023, Iconoclassic released E Street Band founding keyboardist David Sancious' rare, originally-withdrawn album Dance of the Age of Enlightenment on CD for the first time. Now, the label is continuing its association with the artist for a reissue of his 1981 album The Bridge. In a brief note posted to the Iconoclassic website, Sancious succinctly explains The Bridge: "This album features what has always been my first love, the Piano. It consists mainly of piano improvisations. The remaining pieces while having some overdubs are all constructed upon piano improvisations. The use of percussion is purposely absent (with a few minor exceptions) in order to highlight the silence in between the notes so the tone of the piano itself creates a certain desired effect." The Bridge was originally issued on Arista in 1981 in the U.K. and Japan, while the 1982 American edition was released on Elektra. Iconoclassic's worldwide CD premiere has a reversible insert with both covers (take your pick!), while the audio has been newly remastered by Sancious and Robert Frazza for this release.
Earlier this year, Badfinger's Joey Molland passed away the age of 77. In addition to his work with that Beatles-linked band, however, Molland's discography encompasses plenty of other music worth discovering. Foremost might be his affiliation with Natural Gas, the band he formed with Humble Pie's Jerry Shirley upon his departure from Badfinger. Not to be confused with the Canadian horn-rock band of the same name, Molland and Shirley's Natural Gas also featured bassist/vocalist Mark Clarke (Colosseum) and keyboardist Peter Wood (co-writer of Al Stewart's "Year of the Cat"). Unsurprisingly, the supergroup coalesced into a Badfinger-esque outfit, with Molland and Clarke's twin vocals and a crunchy power-pop sound. Felix Pappalardi (Cream, Mountain) helmed the LP, and Natural Gas were off and running when Shirley's old bandmate Peter Frampton invited the band along for the Frampton Comes Alive! tour. Ultimately, Natural Gas just lasted for one studio album, released on the Private Stock label in 1976. Such is the LP's reputation that it's been released on CD numerous times - but never from original master tapes, which Iconoclassic has located for this new reissue. (Any Private Stock release sourced from tape is a rarity, indeed!) This generously expanded edition adds two pre-album demos ("Little Darlin'" and "Christmas Song") as well as a previously unreleased eight-song 1976 concert taken from a soundboard source. The concert concludes with a cover of The Beatles' "Birthday" celebrating the American Bicentennial. Ralph Chapman's new liner notes draw on interviews with Jerry Shirley, Mark Clarke, and Peter Frampton as well as archival quotes from the late Molland; Vic Anesini has remastered. The first 1000 copies of Natural Gas will come in a foil-stamped slipcase replicating the original cover artwork.
