Two decades ago, Mariah Carey's The Emancipation of Mimi was a dramatic comeback for the pop queen. This year, it's due for a comeback of its own with a heavy-duty deluxe edition.
Available May 30, The Emancipation of Mimi (20th Anniversary Edition) arrives from UMe on five LPs offering a host of bonus material, including seven previously unreleased tracks and many more classic remixes. Billed as being "personally compiled" by Carey herself, the 45-track set comes with a 28-page booklet and a letter from the singer explaining the significance of the album on her storied career - all housed in a six-panel LP jacket. A new remix by KAYTRANADA of "Don't Forget About Us," a track issued on the "Ultra Platinum Edition" of the disc released shortly after its original release, has been issued as a preview of the larger set.
Though no CD has been planned, a digital edition will be available on the same day, albeit with five tracks less. The bonus material of the digital track list has been anonymized, though the first "disc" nearly mirrors the first two LPs of the vinyl set (which will also be available on their own). the aforementioned KAYTRANADA remix will be included, and the presence of featured artist metadata on several of the remaining tracks confirms the presence of two tracks from the "Ultra Platinum" set (a remix of "We Belong Together" featuring Jadakiss & Styles P and the Twista collab "So Lonely (One & Only Pt. II)"); two remixes of album opener "It's Like That" (one by Scott Storch featuring Fat Joe and a version by mixer David Morales featuring the album's original guest appearances by Jermaine Dupri and the late Fatman Scoop); a take on "Shake It Off" offering verses by Jay Z and Young Jeezy; the So So Def remix of "Say Somethin'" with guest appearances by Dem Franchize Boyz; Dipset's version of "Your Girl" featuring Cam'ron and Juelz Santana; and two versions of "Don't Forget About Us": the Desert Storm remix including raps by Fabolous and Styles P, and another mix offering features by Juelz Santana and hip-hop group Bone-Thugz-N-Harmony. (Many of the remixes were previously compiled earlier in the decade when, for the 30th anniversary of Mariah Carey's 1990 debut, both Legacy Recordings and UMe issued a series of "MC30" digital EPs with rare and even unreleased versions of tracks.)
A set of this size underscores the dramatic reversal of commercial fortunes for Carey when Mimi first dropped. After a decade of commercial dominance in the '90s, with 15 No. 1 hits (including the Boyz II Men collaboration "One Sweet Day," at the time the longest-serving No. 1 song in pop chart history) and a super-influential musical approach that fused classic, melismatic pop and cutting-edge R&B and even hip-hop, Carey's career threatened to unravel in the 21st century. In the summer of 2001, Carey promoted the soundtrack to her film debut Glitter with a series of erratic appearances that led to a hospitalization and eventual diagnosis with bipolar disorder. The film, released weeks after the September 11 terrorist attacks in America, was a critical and commercial disaster, and Virgin - the label Carey signed to that year after parting ways with longtime home Columbia Records - ended up buying her out of her $80 million contract. Signing to Island, Carey's attempted comeback Charmbracelet (2002) yielded no hit singles.
The Emancipation of Mimi - utilizing a nickname that only close associates knew her by, as a symbol of letting her guard down - was a stunning about-face. Working with a galaxy of talent including So So Def Records impresario Jermaine Dupri (who co-wrote and co-produced her irresistible "Always Be My Baby" in 1995 and collaborated with her several times since), genre-bending duo The Neptunes and longtime friend James "Big Jim" Wright (a protégée and associate of hitmaking duo Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis), Mariah had killer material to bring out her expressive multi-octave range, easily more powerful than what many considered to be weaker vocals on Charmbracelet. Adopting a freer but no less glamorous public image, Carey drew in core fans and made new ones on Mimi: "We Belong Together" would top the Hot 100 for 15 non-consecutive weeks in the spring and summer of the year, and "Shake It Off" would follow at No. 2. After sending a lot of hip-hop flavored cuts to radio, including collabs with Dupri and Snoop Dogg, the "Ultra Platinum" reissue, with an expanded track list, hit stores just before Christmas and gave Carey another chart-topper in "Don't Forget About Us," which peaked at No. 1 for the last week of 2005 and first week of 2006. (Mariah has since upped her total of chart-toppers to 19, including 1994's perennial holiday chestnut "All I Want for Christmas is You"; if she scores another, she'll tie The Beatles' total.)
The expanded Emancipation hits vinyl and digital May 30. Pre-orders and the full-track list are below. (As an Amazon affiliate, we earn from qualifying purchases.)

I’ ve now had this cd 20 years. Still a classic. Why is this not on cd?
Agreed; maybe I won’t hold my breath, but I’m at least slightly hoping that there’s an eventual CD version of this anniversary release.
CD Japan is offering a 2-CD version of the album.
This is just too expensive. Seems not only Springsteen's camp is missing a bulb (or more) in the chandelier.
Ummm $250 for a 5LP box?!?! Jeez, i thought Bruce's set was pricey, but that one is actually better-priced, similarly & 7LP...and also on CD...actually that's $50 a record, which many are now, ridiculously...i will wait for a pricedrop and/or a CD version...im not much of a hiphop/90s mainstream R&B fan, but i do have a softspot for my Harborfields Highschool mate...so i will get this eventually...
