An early, classic compilation by Jethro Tull will be remixed, expanded and wildly reconstructed by engineer Steven Wilson.
Still Living in the Past, available July 11 from Rhino, will reinterpret the group's odds-and-ends compilation from 1972 as a 5CD/1 Blu-ray set boasting some 35 unissued mixes and versions alongside just about every one of the 21 original tracks that appeared on the original double album. Alongside the original mixes of the non-album material that comprised Living in the Past, Wilson has compiled his mixes of those tracks - both versions done for box set editions of This Was, Stand Up, Benefit and Aqualung and a few new ones - as well as a newly remixed and properly sequenced presentation of a 1970 live set from Carnegie Hall. The accompanying Blu-ray includes high-resolution versions of the original mixes and Wilson's (along with some select 5.1 surround offerings, including the Carnegie Hall set) as well as four original promo videos. A 2LP set will replicate the original Living in the Past running order with Wilson's remixes past and present.
It's all sort of a deconstruction or reconstruction of an album that proffered old Jethro Tull material in a new way. Living in the Past arrived when the flute-driven folk-rockers were already making a splash on both sides of the Atlantic with their first four albums. (All of them were Top 10 hits in the U.K., and the latter three attained gold certifications from the Recording Industry Association of America.) As was customary in the British market, the band recorded and promoted plenty of material that only stayed on single releases; those sides were not only collected for Living in the Past, but many were given first-time stereo remixes at Morgan Studios in the spring of 1971. (The title track, initially released as a U.K. single in 1969, was issued to promote the album in America and peaked at No. 11 on the Billboard Hot 100 - the band's highest-charting single release.) The album also included some choice material that no one had heard before, including outtakes "Singing All Day" and "Just Trying to Be" and a side's worth of audio from a performance at Carnegie Hall in New York City recorded on November 4, 1970.
With some of the relevant Living in the Past material remastered and/or remixed by Wilson for previous collections, the box set version of Still Living in the Past does not perfectly replicate the original album - but it does offer a few choice selections for fans and collectors. Unused mixes of tracks like "Life is a Long Song," "Inside" and "Lick Your Fingers Clean" are here, along with a new "unplugged" mix by Wilson of fan favorite "Locomotive Breath." The Carnegie Hall concert also gets its most comprehensive presentation here; the material that didn't make Living in the Past was issued in a box set back in 1993 and was re-edited in sequence with the Living in the Past tracks for a 2010 expanded edition. (This version offers intros to most of the tracks, thus spreading the set to two CDs.)

As a music fan who grew up at the time this music was “new” it now seems to me that JT played an important rule in communicating to the casual listener that “music” was much more than “song”. That is, their quasi-progressive emphasis on the non-verbal while emerging as a popular force made them special. Given this new retrospective “reimagining” I would welcome hearing the TSD view of the JT body of work, perhaps reviewing this release at some point…(?)
I have all the other deluxe Steven Wilson remix sets, and they are absolutely the gold standard of reissues, in both content and packaging. But this is the first time I’m wondering if I really need this one. I certainly don’t need to hear new subtly different mixes of 17, Teacher or Inside, for example.
The only reason I would even consider it is that it would look so nice beside the others. Not sure that’s enough.
I hear you, Bernie. But the completist in me – and seemingly you as well – leads me to think that this should be procured all the same...
