Buck-le up! Omnivore is returning to the discography of Bakersfield's favorite son, Buck Owens, with a new 3CD set that chronicles a decade of music-making on the concert stage. Buck and His Buckaroos' Adios, Farewell, Goodbye, Good Luck, So Long: On Stage 1964-1974 is due from the label on June 27. It boasts 89 tracks (78 songs plus 11 introductions and pieces of onstage chatter) - the majority of which are new to CD. A full 25 tracks have never been issued in any format, while a whopping 43 others are premiering in CD and digital formats including the complete contents of The Exciting Sounds of Buck Owens and His Buckaroos Live from Richmond, Virginia, 1964, which was released earlier this year on vinyl.
This set offers plenty more in the way of exciting sounds, however, capturing the honky-tonk crew in various settings around the world including New York City, Las Vegas, Reno, Tokyo, Australia, New Zealand, and, of course, Bakersfield. The first disc presents the Richmond, Virginia show from 1964 as well as a 1967 set at Macy's flagship department store in New York's Herald Square performed for its employees. The second CD draws from two previously released concert albums - 1969's The Buck Owens Show: Big in Vegas and 1972's Live at the Nugget (from Reno, Nevada) - as well as premiering sets from a 1973 golf tournament dinner and a Toys for Tots benefit performance at the Bakersfield Civic Auditorium the same year. Finally, the third disc of this set joins together highlights from three LPs originally released in their respective international territories in 1974: Buck Owens' Show in Japan, Live at the Sydney Opera House, and Live in New Zealand. These albums, never released in the U.S., show the worldwide reach of Owens and The Buckaroos' raw, energetic, and stripped-down brand of country music. Buckaroos on this set include Don Rich, Doyle Holly, Tom Brumley, and Willie Cantu as well as subsequent members Jerry Brightman, Jerry Wiggins, Doyle Curtsinger, and Ronnie Jackson.
The lavish set also includes a 56-page book with liner notes by Scott B. Bomar and photos, while the whole set has been newly restored and mastered by Michael Graves. I recall that after the third Buck Owens box set was released in 2012 Bear Family indicated there would be a 4th set containing all of Buck's live albums and recordings. But Richard Weize sold that label and the project never happened.
Omnivore then superseded Sundazed as the "official" label for Buck's reissues & releases so that too may have played a role. The good news is that this new Omnivore set is finally releasing tracks from Buck's overlooked and unreleased live albums.
This set does not duplicate live Buck Owens albums previously issued on CD from Sundazed & Omnivore - Carnegie Hall [1966], In Japan [1967], In London [1969], In Scandinavia [1970] & Live At The White House [1972]
This new collection begins with the 1964 Richmond, Virginia Concert recently issued only on vinyl for Record Store Day. Great to have that one on CD as well as the newly unearthed performances from Macy's, the golf tournament and Toy For Tots.
Tracks from the Big In Vegas & Live At The Nugget albums and the three 1974 albums never released in the U.S. from Japan, Australia & New Zealand are also included. But unfortunately those albums are not being re-released with their original track line-up intact. Performances by Buck with Don Rich & The Buckaroo's are included but not those by the other members of his touring roadshow including Buddy Alan, Susan Raye, Tony Booth & The Hagers. A bit disappointing but perhaps legal issues involving the other artists may have prevented the full re-release of the complete original albums.
That said, it's always great to hear more vintage Buck and I'm really looking forward to this one.
And thanks again to The Second Disc for featuring new country releases!
Super excited the Richmond show is going to be on CD. Bought the vinyl too. I had completely forgotten about the Bellevue Theatre in Richmond, I had guessed (wrongly) other places that I knew he had played. Pretty sure the building is still in use I'm gonna drive by there today and see.
It's been converted into apartments. Pretty nice ones it looks like.

I'm at least happy to see the theatre exterior is being preserved!
