Vince Guaraldi, Oh, Good Grief! (Omnivore)
CD: Amazon U.S. / Amazon U.K. / Amazon Canada
LP: Amazon U.S. / Amazon U.K. / Amazon Canada
Back in 2018, Omnivore Recordings collected The Complete Warner Bros.-Seven Arts Recordings of jazz pianist-composer-Peanuts legend Vince Guaraldi. Now, the label is breaking out one of the albums contained in that set for CD and vinyl reissue. 1968's Oh, Good Grief! was built around his familiar compositions for Charles M. Schulz's legendary characters, but those tunes were subtly updated as Guaraldi added electric guitar and electric harpsichord to his trio (piano/bass/drums) format. Kevin Gray has remastered these vibrant new editions.
They Might Be Giants, The Spine Surfs Alone: Rarities 1998-2005 (Idlewild Recordings) (Amazon U.S. / Amazon U.K. / Amazon Canada)
A collection of harder-to-find material from stalwart alt-rock duo They Might Be Giants - released on vinyl last year - gets a belated appearance on CD at general retail. The Spine Surfs Alone: Rarities 1998-2005 includes the balance of two EPs: 2000's Working Undercover for the Man, released only through the early digital service eMusic, and 2004's The Spine Surfs Alone, an early release on the band's own Idlewild Recordings label. The album is balanced out by a few single cuts, compilation appearances (including covers of Paul McCartney and a song from Hedwig and the Angry Inch), material from the mostly live album Severe Tire Damage (1998) and an unreleased instrumental version of "T-Shirt," a song recorded during the sessions for TMBG's 2005 children's album Here Come the ABCs. Various Artists, Springsteen's Country (Ace) (Amazon U.S. / Amazon U.K. / Amazon Canada)
Springsteen's Country will collect 20 covers of The Boss, some familiar (Johnny Cash's "Johnny 99," Steve Earle's live take on "State Trooper"), some offbeat (a take on Tunnel of Love opener "Ain't Got You" by Solomon Burke, the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band's version of beloved outtake "From Small Things (Big Things One Day Come)"), and some altogether lesser known (Americana acts like Lera Lynn and The Whiskey Treaty Roadshow interpreting "Fire" and "The Rising"). The set was compiled by Sean Rowley, a well-known British DJ/presenter who happens to be one of the men on the album cover of Oasis' (What's the Story) Morning Glory?. (Rowley previously assembled Ladies Sing The Boss for Ace.) Get the track listing and more here.
Melanie, Wow and Flutter (Cleopatra) (Amazon U.S. / Amazon U.K. / Amazon Canada)
Melanie's 2020 digital rarities collection has been expanded for its physical debut. Wow and Flutter includes unique renditions of favorites ("Brand New Key," "Lay Down (Candles in the Rain)") and covers ("She's Always a Woman," "Baby, It's You," "The Air That I Breathe," "We Can Work It Out," and "The Long and Winding Road") alike. This edition features photos and new liner notes.
Rain Parade, Crashing Dream: Deluxe Edition (Label 51) (Amazon U.S. / Amazon U.K. / Amazon Canada)
Label 51 has a remastered deluxe edition of the Paisley Underground band's acclaimed second album. The expanded Crashing Dream adds a second disc of bonus material including a number of rare demos from 1991's self-released limited edition Demolition. It's available on CD, LP, and digitally, and the physical editions have expanded packaging with new liner notes and photos.
Bryan Ferry, Olympia (BMG) (Amazon U.S. / Amazon U.K. / Amazon Canada)
Bryan Ferry's 2010 album featuring "You Can Dance" (and guest spots from Nile Rodgers, Scissor Sisters, and David Gilmour) gets an upgrade with oversized, "Japanese-style" artwork and two bonus tracks. Available on CD and LP.
Sufjan Stevens, Carrie & Lowell: 10th Anniversary Edition (Asthmatic Kitty)
2CD: Amazon U.S. / Amazon U.K. / Amazon Canada
2LP: Amazon U.S. / Amazon U.K. / Amazon Canada
Sufjan Stevens' seventh album Carrie & Lowell arrives in a deluxe edition for its 10th anniversary. The 2CD or 2LP set includes a small trove of seven unreleased demos - including a version of a track that would be the closest thing Stevens may have to a signature song - along with a 40-page book of artwork and a new essay by the singer/songwriter. Interestingly, Stevens' new notes are reportedly as brutally honest as the retrospective interview he just gave to NPR about the album, which he deemed "evidence of creative and artistic failure from my vantage point...manipulative and self-centered and solipsistic and self-loathing," going as far to say he's "kind of embarrassed" and even regrets making the album. Gloria Estefan, Raices (Sony Music Latin) (Amazon U.S. / Amazon U.K. / Amazon Canada)
With her 30th album, Raices, Gloria Estefan celebrates 50 years in music and her first Spanish-language recording in 18 years. Available on CD and digital formats.
Maybe Happy Ending: Original Broadway Cast Recording (Ghostlight) (Amazon U.S. / Amazon U.K. / Amazon Canada)
The original cast recording of Broadway's most enchanting new musical arrives today on CD following a digital release in March. (The vinyl edition is due in a couple of weeks.) The multiple-Tony Award-nominated Maybe Happy Ending, with a book and score by Will Aronson and Hue Park, stars Darren Criss and Helen J. Shen as two robots nearing obsolescence who embark on an amazing adventure. Tender, funny, and ultimately moving, the show directed by Michael Arden has become one of Broadway's biggest hits; its quirky and touching score has been favorably compared to the likes of Stephen Sondheim, Burt Bacharach, Richard Rodgers, and Sufjan Stevens. Hear for yourself on this 26-track album which preserves the complete score plus one bonus track.
