Omigod, you guys!  Ghostlight Records is giving another beloved Broadway cast album a vinyl debut.  This time the show is Legally Blonde and the 2-LP set hits store shelves tomorrow, July 18.

In 2000, author Amanda Brown was working on a manuscript to turn her experiences at Stanford Law School into a novel.  She met with producer Marc Platt who helped her accomplish that while also selling the idea for a film version.  Eventually titled Legally Blonde, the screenplay was written by Karen McCullah Lutz and Kirsten Smith.  Directed by Robert Luketic, the movie hit theaters on July 13, 2001.

It starred Reese Witherspoon as Elle Woods, a California University of Los Angeles Student who hopes to marry her boyfriend Warner Huntington III (Matthew Davis).  But instead of proposing, he informs her that he is breaking up with her and heading to Harvard Law School.  Determined to win him back, she also applies and is accepted into Harvard.  But she faces many hurdles at her new school where the culture is completely different than anything to which she's accustomed.  She befriends beautician Paulette (Jennifer Coolidge) and TA Emmett (Luke Wilson) and then has to prove herself when she gets assigned as part of a team assisting one of her professors at a murder trial.

Legally Blonde proved to be a hit, making $142 million at the box office and spawning a 2003 sequel, Legally Blonde 2: Red White and Blonde.  A few years later, a musical stage version began development.  The adaptation had a book written by Heather Hach with music and lyrics by Nell Benjamin and Laurence O'Keefe.  It premiered in San Francisco's Golden Gate Theatre in January and February of 2007 before moving to Broadway's Palace Theatre where it opened on April 29 of that same year.  The production was directed and choreographed by Jerry Mitchell, with set design by David Rockwell and costume design by Gregg Barnes.

Following the same plot as the movie, it starred Laura Bell Bundy as Elle along with Annaleigh Ashford as Margot, Richard H. Blake as Warner Huntington III, Christian Borle as Emmett Forrest, Natalie Joy Johnson as Enid, Andy Karl as Kyle, Leslie Rodriguez Kritzer as Serena, DeQuina Moore as Pilar, Orfeh as Paulette, Michael Rupert as Professor Callahan, Kate Shindle as Vivienne Kensington, and Nikki Snelson as Brooke Wyndham.  The show was nominated for seven Tony Awards, but did not win any.  MTV got involved with the production when they filmed three performances in September 2007 to be edited together into one October broadcast.  MTV also produced a reality show which aimed to cast Bundy's replacement in the musical.  The eight-episode Legally Blonde: The Musical - The Search for Elle Woods premiered in June, 2008.  Bailey Hanks won the competition and joined the cast as Elle in July.  However, she was not in the role long, as the show closed in October.  The musical has enjoyed several national tours over the years and had a West End production from 2010-2012 (winning a Laurence Olivier Award for "Best New Musical") along with UK tours.  It has also had numerous international stagings and remains a staple on the regional, local, and high school theatre circuits.

Producers Joel Moss and Kurt Deutsch recorded the original cast album for Ghostlight in May 2007 and it was released in July.  It hit No. 1 on the Billboard Cast Album chart and No. 86 on the Billboard 200.  Ghostlight's new vinyl version comes on 2 LPs and is pressed on hot pink vinyl (what else?).  If you would like to give it a try, we've got the tracklisting and ordering links below.  As an Amazon affiliate, we earn from qualifying purchases.
