John Lennon and Yoko Ono's New Live Box Set Showcases 'Sometime in New York City' and Elsewhere

John and Yoko Power to the People

BUY NOW FROM AMAZON.COM

One of the most incendiary periods of John Lennon and Yoko Ono's life together is about to be re-explored in a new 9CD/3Blu-ray box set coming on October 10 (one day after what would have been Lennon's 85th birthday) from Capitol Records/UMe.  Power to the People features 123 tracks (90 of which are previously unreleased) to tell the full story of Lennon and Ono's political activism, spanning the prolific period between 1969's anthem "Give Peace a Chance" and 1972's controversial live album Sometime in New York City as well as that year's One to One concerts at Madison Square Garden.  Sadly, those shows would be John's only full-length, post-Beatles concerts, and also the final concerts he and Yoko ever performed together.  The story is told via live tracks, demos, home recordings, jams, and much more.

The box opens with three discs of the One to One concerts: the afternoon show, the evening show, and a hybrid blending the best performances from both.  The charity shows raised over $1.5 million (or $11.5 million in 2025 dollars) to support children with developmental and intellectual disabilities.  The concerts have been completely remixed by Paul Hicks and Sean Gannon from the original multitrack tapes as transferred by Rob Stevens; Alex Wharton has mastered the audio at Abbey Road.  The CDs are in stereo while the Blu-rays offer mixes in high-resolution stereo, Dolby Atmos, and 5.1 surround.  This marks a significant upgrade for the material, some of which appeared on the 1986 release Live in New York City.  This presentation follows the documentary release One to One: John & Yoko which premieres this fall on HBO Max following a limited theatrical run earlier in the year; whereas that film utilized portions of the shows, a full concert film will arrive next year under the same title of Power to the People.

Power to the People, the box set, continues with brand-new Ultimate Mixes and an Evolution Documentary (following the formats of previous Lennon boxes including last year's Mind Games: The Ultimate Collection) based on the studio material released on the 1972 double album Sometime in New York City.  (Note that the album's original opening track, "Woman is the Nigger of the World," has been dropped, and does not appear in its live incarnations, either.)   The Evolution Documentaries are audio montages which chronicle a song from demo to final master.

A disc of studio jams with John, Yoko, drummer Jim Keltner, and the members of Elephant's Memory features numerous oldies ("Ain't That a Shame," "Roll Over Beethoven," "Honey Don't," "Yakety Yak," "My Babe") and anticipates John's Rock 'n' Roll album; that disc is rounded out by a quartet of Elements Mixes from Sometime in New York City isolating and illuminating the orchestral aspects of each song.

The second LP of the original Sometime in New York City featured two live dates. "Cold Turkey" and "Don't Worry Kyoko" on Side Three were culled from a 1969 UNICEF benefit, with George Harrison, Eric Clapton, Billy Preston, Keith Moon, Delaney and Bonnie, Klaus Voormann, and others in the band.  Side Four offered four jams from June 6, 1971 at New York's Fillmore East with Frank Zappa and The Mothers of Invention (at that time including The Turtles' Howard Kaylan, Mark Volman, and Jim Pons along with Aynsley Dunbar, Ian Underwood, Don Preston, and Bob Harris).  CD 7 of the new box reprises both the 1969 and 1971 sets, while CD 8 dips into the vaults for (mostly) previously unreleased live performances from The David Frost Show, the 1972 Jerry Lewis Muscular Dystrophy telethon, a 1971 benefit at the Apollo for families of the victims of the Attica State riot, and a 1971 show with David Peel and The Lower East Side for the John Sinclair Freedom Rally.

The ninth and final CD is another treasure trove from the archives, premiering home jams and recordings at the St. Regis Hotel in Manhattan (including more classic tunes such as "Wake Up, Little Susie," "Peggy Sue," and "Hi-Heel Sneakers') and three songs recorded with folk hero Phil Ochs.

Yoko Ono writes in the Preface to the box, "The One to One concert was our effort in Grassroots Politics. It embodied what John and I strongly believed in - Rock for Peace and Enlightenment. And this one in Madison Square Garden turned out to be the last concert John and I did together. Imagine Peace. Peace is Power. Power To The People!"  John Lennon concurred; he told NME in 1972, "That Madison Square Garden gig was the best music I enjoyed playing since the Cavern or even Hamburg.  It was just the same kind of feeling when The Beatles used to really get into it."

Compilation producer Sean Ono Lennon adds in the press release, "I was completely floored putting this collection together and getting to remix the concerts and hearing all the unreleased material from my parents' archive for the first time.  People may not realize how special it is for me to hear my dad talking or to see him. I grew up with a set number of images and audio clips that everyone's familiar with. So to come across things that I've never seen or heard is really deep for me, because it's almost like getting more time with my dad. When I was eleven, my mum put out the Live in New York City album and film. So I grew up listening to it. It was a concert that had a legendary status in my mind, because it was my dad's last concert. For the concerts, Paul Hicks and Simon Hilton and I spent a lot of time finding the best possible balance to keep the feeling of a live show while refining the overall sound as much as possible and Sam Gannon did some meticulous and miraculous work with audio restoration. I won't disclose all our techniques but there was some 'movie magic' required, and I think in the end, the shows sound better than ever."

The 12 discs are housed in a 10-inch slipcase with silver foil titling and a lenticular cover of John and Yoko's faces that give a 3D effect layered on top of each other.  A 204-page hardcover book edited and designed by Simon Hilton includes an oral history of the music within, plus previously unreleased photos and memorabilia images (tape boxes, lyrics, drawings, and more).  The set also includes a newspaper print poster, sticker sheets, and an envelope containing replica concert tickets, backstage and post-show passes.

For those interested only in the One to One concerts, they will be released outside of the box set as an Audiophile 4LP Deluxe Collector's Edition containing four 180-gram black vinyl LPs with rice-paper inner sleeves and an 8-page booklet housed in a 12-inch lift-off-lid box, with the same silver foil titling and lenticular cover as the boxed set as well as the same replica envelope with concert tickets, passes, and poster.

A 2CD Deluxe Edition with a triple gatefold digi-sleeve featuring a lenticular cover of John and Yoko's faces includes a 20-page booklet. The "best-of" hybrid concert will also be available as a standalone release on CD and 2LP audiophile 180-gram black vinyl.  The vinyl version has an 8-page, 12-inch booklet with a 6-panel newsprint poster and two postcards.  "Come Together," featuring Jim Keltner and Elephant's Memory, from the One to One evening show is streaming now.

John and Yoko's political and musical activism has been dissected in books, films, articles, television specials, and every format conceivable; now their art speaks for itself with this new box set.  Power to the People is due on October 10 from Capitol/UMe.  You'll find pre-order links below, and we'll add Amazon links when available.  As an Amazon affiliate, we earn from qualifying purchases.

Not only has That Song been omitted from both concerts and the album (in any mix), but Sisters O Sisters also is not on either concert disc. What's more, the first disc in the deluxe box is merely a distillation of discs two and three. While this isn't as bad as five remixes of the same 12 tracks (one of which was silent) in the Mind Games box, it's still redundant and unnecessary. (And what the H is "Law And Order" anyway?)

I think these sets are now designed to just look good and get the most buck out of folks...and now sprinkle a dash of extra revisionism.

Very disappointed that 'Woman is..." will not be included. Revisonist history... And John would not approve...

"tell the full story of Lennon and Ono's political activism..." They chopped out the album's single? For what - to avoid offending modern sensibilities. John Lennon circa 1972 was ALL ABOUT offending modern sensibilities. Poor John would be spinning in his grave if he knew about his family's cowardly Soviet-style revisionist history.

John was always about freedom of speech. To see that the Lennon Estate has chosen to muzzle him by not only excluding Woman is from Sometime, but also removing it from the two live shows, leaving them incompete.
Another complaint is the bloat of the set. Why do we need a "best of " cd when we have the afternoon and evening shows on separate cds? Any why must we buy the same content on cd and bluray when I will probably never play the bluray discs?
I am so disappointed ted the Sean has not stood up for his father's right to say something that may not be politically correct now, instead of engendering an honest conversation about the song and it's meaning.

I agree with everything you (and others) say, but I don't think it's Sean's fault, or the Estate's.

This set was due at least a couple of years ago; there was a podcast at the time, and some circulating info, saying they Universal wanted the song removed, but Sean put his foot down for the song to stay.
This put the set on hold for years.

Apparently he caved in, eventually... and unfortunately...

Sean, for better or worse, has said some very critical things about "woke" in the past - a word that's long lost its original meaning, imo, and one I'm not entirely sure Sean understood, based on his social media posts. I can believe neither possibility that he decided the track shouldn't be there, or acquiesced to other voices saying it shouldn't, either. (My wife, a massive Beatles fan, and I were discussing it last night and we both agree John was - at the time and often! - making a trenchant point in a very clumsy way.)

Has this track been cancelled? Sure, the track was controversial, but as far as I can tell, Lennon never exprsesed any regret over releasing it.

On tenterhooks to hear the "unreleased track" "Phone call from Henry Gotsello"!! CD's 1, 2 and 3 show the disdain this set displays. Why have a best of something repeated in the same box? The majority of this box is just padding. How long before we get an album of Lennon whistling in Central Park?

This is obscene. It's bad enough that they omit the studio recording of WITNOTW - at least that's availale elsewhere. But they also edit the performance of that song (as well as Sisters, O Sisters) out of both of the One to One concerts? So we're NOT getting the complete performances? I can't imagine Lennon himself would have been ok with that. After all, HE decided to include the song on Sometime in New York City. HE decided to release the song as a single. HE decided to perform the song at the One to One concerts.

I understand I shouldn't take these things personally. And it's not as if I consider WITNOW to be a great song. Heck, I don't consider Sometime in New York City to be a great album. But I am truly offended by the record label's and producer's attempt to erase this song from history. And I'm equally offended -- indeed MORE offended -- by the estate's complicity in this.

It's pretty clear that Universal doesn't care what fans think. So all I can do is vote with my wallet and encourage others to do the same.

I do think leaving the song off is a little silly given that it's still very much in circulation in all its unredacted glory on streaming services and lots of other places. That said, not everyone was going to be satisfied by whatever the outcome was here. I can appreciate the creative approach taken to reimagining the concept of the box as more of an "era" box than an album box. And now every time there's a new Lennon product, people won't have to obsess about what will become of STINYC. C'est la vie.

Maybe it's true that you can't please everyone. But seriously, who does Universal think a 12 disc box set is meant for? This isn't a casual purchase. Anyone who would seriously consider buying the deluxe set already knows about WITNOTW. It's hard to imagine anyone who would seriously consider buying the deluxe set declining to do so because it includes WINOTW. But it's not that hard to imagine some hard core Lennon completists being pissed off about the omission of one of the SINYC album tracks (and single release), and equally annoyed by the compilers' decision to present incomplete versions of the One to One Concerts, to the point where they would pass on this. I count myself among that group. Someone I just don't think the suits at Universal have figured out the audience for these box sets.

I'll find a free download of the set (easy to do if you know where to look) and give it a listen. If, and that's a big IF, I like it I'll wait 6 months when the price will plummet to about $100. Then I'll consider a purchase. However, I find that with most of the large sets, you listen to it once or twice and then it sits on a shelf collecting dust. As I'm in my 60's, my desire to acquire large sets this late in life is diminishing.

Same opinion here, Universal totally missed the target audience. The few (if any) people who will not buy the set because WOTNOW is on it are by far outweighed by the bulk of disappointed fans who won't buy it because of its omission! (Including myself.)

What's more of a mystery to me is why "Sisters O Sisters" was cut from both shows too...?!? So the only way to hear that is STILL the "This Is Not Here" boot LP and the dreadful 80s mix from the video!
I'm pissed off and will stick with my bootlegs until someone will hopefully put out the full show(s) one day.

Yes, exactly - we are the target audience - not some Gen-Z'er who is maybe, gonna be offended by the songs?? I'm a 'completist' - but this is one collection I will not be adding...

On one hand, the long drought of Beatles and Beatles-related music product has ended, but I have mixed feelings about this set. It's not the omission of the studio version of the controversial song that's the issue. I've got the original mix and the 1990's remix in my collection. It's the omission of the live versions, which will never be heard, unless some bootlegger has audience recordings of them.
While Universal music executives were agonizing over whether to let other American and European websites (other than their own) accept preorders for this set, I went ahead and ordered the Japanese pressing from CD Japan. My prediction is that this set won't sell well and that Universal Music won't permit "Walls & Bridges","Rock and Roll" and "Double Fantasy" to receive the Super Deluxe box set treatment.
By the way.Amazon.com is now accepting preorders for "Power to The People"
