Free As a Bird: The Beatles 'Anthology' Gets Remixed and Expanded in New Box Set

Beatles Anthology Collection

The next archival project from The Beatles is a celebration of their most major archival project, with a newly reissued and (slightly) expanded edition of their Anthology series coming to audio and video formats this fall.

Anthology Collection will include remastered editions of the original three collections of rarities and outtakes compiled by George Martin and released through 1995 and 1996, available across six CDs or nine LPs. Martin's son Giles, who remastered those albums, also curates a new collection, Anthology 4, across a further two CDs or three LPs. Anthology 4 is drawn mostly from archival sets released in the wake of the band's 2009 remastering of the catalogue, with 13 unreleased tracks taken from eras that have not been covered by such releases. The album is rounded out by new mixes from producer Jeff Lynne of Anthology's then-new tracks "Free As a Bird" and "Real Love," along with "Now and Then," a song from the same sessions that was released in 2023. Mark Lewisohn's comprehensive notes for the original three volumes will be complemented by new liner notes by Kevin Howlett. The revisited box set will be released November 21; the announcement makes no indication of whether or not Anthology 4 will be available individually beyond its digital release.

As it was three decades ago, the Anthology celebration will comprise other media. The blockbuster 1995 docuseries will stream on Disney+ starting with its original three parts on November 26. The series will include its original eight parts plus a new ninth, offering additional unseen footage from the surviving group members' reunion in the studio for the project. (No physical reissue has been announced for the program.) Finally, the 2000 book offering interview excerpts from all four Beatles and thousands of rare photos and artifacts, will be put back into print as a new softcover version on October 21.

The Beatles' Anthology was the apex of pop music archival pursuits when it was broadcast and released in the fall of 1995. Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr all sat for new interviews discussing the spectacular run of The Fab Four, along with trusted colleagues like George Martin, press agent Derek Taylor and Apple Corps manager Neil Aspinall. (John Lennon, who'd been murdered nearly 15 years earlier, was represented by archival interviews.) The series was broadcast on ITV in their native England and ABC in America, becoming a ratings juggernaut and a bestseller when expanded cuts of each episode were released on VHS and later DVD in the early '00s.

In addition to the comprehensive overview of their career as they saw it, McCartney, Harrison and Starr also convened with Jeff Lynne of Electric Light Orchestra and a selection of piano-led demo cassettes of Lennon's supplied by his widow Yoko Ono) to create several "new" Beatles recordings. "Free As a Bird" and "Real Love" were issued as singles from 1995's Anthology 1 and 1996's Anthology 2 and became Top 10 hits on both sides of the Atlantic ("Real Love" peaked at No. 11 in the States). Two additional tracks, "Grow Old with Me" and "Now and Then," were abandoned, but the latter was resurrected (utilizing technological advancements that better separated Lennon's piano and vocal, along with a vaulted overdub by the since-deceased Harrison and new overdubs by McCartney and Starr) for a remix of the group's 1962-1966 and 1967-1970 compilations in 2023. Footage from these sessions is the driver for Anthology's newly created ninth episode; Peter Jackson's Wingnut Films and Park Road Post teams have restored all the footage for the upcoming streaming version, along with new Giles Martin mixes of "the majority of the featured music" in the special.

No new mixes appear on Anthology Collection besides the updated "Free As a Bird" and "Real Love." (The former is available to hear digitally now.) The use of Anthology 4 as a majority compilation for previously released material (including the digital-only The Beatles Bootleg Recordings 1963, released in 2013, and two takes of "This Boy" released on the original CD single for "Free As a Bird" with additional material that remain exclusive to that disc) certainly elicits a feeling or two in the heart of a certain type of buyer/collector. If nothing else, this whole exercise will be an opportunity for new fans to rediscover Anthology along with recapturing that magic for seasoned Beatle believers.

The new Anthology collection is available at the links below. Copies sold in the official Beatles web store include a set of art cards. (As an Amazon affiliate, we earn from qualifying purchases.)

I wish we had control over when Amazon populates its links, Scott, but unfortunately, we don't. 🙁 We do the best we can with what we have!

I know Joe. I realize that. You do a great job and I always look forward to visiting the site. This is in Amazon's hands, not yours.
Honestly and sincerely, keep up the great work!

I sympathize with you, Scott - Amazon links are almost never in sync with product announcements these days. Two of the major catalogue players (and, thus, many of the artists we cover) have their own infrastructure for selling direct to consumer, and those are usually what gets pushed first. I have no idea if the Carly Rae Jepsen vinyl we reported on the other day will be on Amazon at all.

We're then usually left with the choice of losing out on what little revenue we might get from affiliate links, or reporting stuff well after it was announced. (All of that to say that we're very grateful for YOU coming to our site, too.)

Thank you Mike. It's one of the most informative sites for reissues, hands down.

Anthology 4 will inevitably be issued separately. The cash cow must be milked.

The new Free As Bird sounds good, I guess used the same method as Now And Then. I wonder why they never redid Grow Old With Me, maybe for the next reissue?

Did the “Threetles” work on Grow Old With Me? If they did, I’m not aware.

If not, and given Now and Then was marketed as “The last Beatles single” I’d guess not, then it’s not a “Beatles” song. Paul and Ringo could still play on it, but George can’t.

Why didn’t they design a cover for Anthology 4 in the style of the first three, this one looks uninspired to say the least. Even if it covers the same period as the first three volumes together.

Not sure what you mean. I’m referring to the card sleeve of the two Anthology 4 discs pictured above. The same artwork which is used for the collection box. I see the same one in the video.

As disappointing as the Red/Blue Sets from 2023. I can see releasing something like this when there's nothing else left, but there are many albums left to give the deluxe treatment to. To add insult to injury, including 17 already released tracks in "Anthology 4"? They won't be getting my money on this one.

Yeah, the fact that Vol. 4 is a mish-mash of stuff from previous deluxe editions, plus unreleased cuts from sessions of the albums that *haven’t* been deluxe’d yet, makes me real suspicious that this may be the end of the line for the album expansions.

(Either that, or someone was simply hellbent on this year’s project being the Anthology anniversary, and god forbid they don’t have “new” product as part of it to dangle the carrot, even if the result makes a clusterf--- of previous archival sets.) 🤷‍♂️

Minor complaint, but I wish they had included the three additional tracks from the Real Love CD single on Anthology 4.

"Baby's In Black" is on Eight Days A Week: Live At The Hollywood Bowl.

"Yellow Submarine" appears on the Revolver SDE.

The only track that isn't available elsewhere is the outfake of "Here There And Everywhere" (because the Revolver SDE has the track without the added backing vocals), and I agree that it's surprising it isn't here.

Wow. A lot of previously released tracks, no long version of It’s All Too Much, no full, uncut Helter Skelter jam, and oh yeah… No Carnival of Light either. Not even a physical release of the full Rooftop Concert.

Tell me again why I should buy a pricey box with the first three Anthologies I already own but rarely listen to?

Failure to make this available individually, or include nothing but unreleased tracks when there’s plenty more out there, is a bad joke.

Worst of all, no Rubber Soul box this year either, apparently. Thanks for nothing, Apple.

hi 13 new trax. dats it. the used record stores have anthol 1 2 3 for about $10. any one who buys this will want to dump the old ones . but to release trax from the deluxe edition is wrong. there a lot of better still unreleased trax in emi.example. help backing track what your doing john barret mix penny lane with oboe and longer trumpet ending. etcthis will slow down/take away sales from lennon box comin out.

$10 each on vinyl? Let me know where that is please.

Are you personally worried about Lennon family finances? That’s very sweet of you.

when it comes to online ordering i use to use Amazon. As there are many outlets in which to order, i rarely order from them. I order from Denmark a place called Jpc De a very very good place, and also imusic & i also go directly to Ebay UK & type in the music i want to buy & a number of music stores arrive it's worth trying for sure, and it also gives you the cost & postage from a number of outlets.

It goes against the purpose of the entire Anthology series to release PREVIOUSLY released tracks. That was the whole point of Anthology: to show unused tracks. Even Now And Then should be a different mix or something.

      This.
      THIS!
      100% THIS!

I mean, I recognize that, for most of EMI/Universal, these Beatles releases are "product" and they've probably decided that it's better to release a product they can also tie in with some splashy Disney+ exclusive, blah, blah, blah...

But, I wish they could recognize that there is a massive contingent of their customer base --you know, we maniacs who are compelled to buy (almost, but not this time) ANYTHING that they release related to this band, would be much more compelled to buy these lesser-desirable releases, such as the superfluous Red & Blue reissues from a few years back, if they could alternate it with things that we are clearly asking for, like a super deluxe Rubber Soul box. I absolutely purchased those Red & Blue sets because I was hoping it would encourage them to keep going with the individual album sets we're all begging for, but it would appear I only encouraged them to keep pumping out stuff like this.

I still have my fingers crossed that we'll get a spiffy Ghost in the Machine box, this year, but my nerd heart has been left slightly crushed/lol.

I haven't seen a source on this that ISN'T a U.K. tabloid, but my equally strong wishes for more Police catalogue material are looking VERY dim right now. https://uk.news.yahoo.com/sting-being-sued-former-bandmates-095919784.html
