All That You Dream: Rhino Sets Expansion of Little Feat's 'Last Record Album'

Little Feat The Last Record Album Deluxe

BUY NOW FROM RHINO.COM

Another Little Feat deluxe album is making the rounds from Rhino.

1975's The Last Record Album, the group's fifth LP, will be expanded by the label in multiple formats, all available October 24. The 4CD set will pair the remastered album with a bonus disc of studio rarities (half of which are previously unreleased) along with an unissued live set at Boston's Orpheum Theater recorded on Halloween of 1975. A 2LP set includes all the studio material in the CD box, and an exclusive bundle, available only at Rhino.com, will add a fifth CD featuring eight tracks from a live set recorded in London in the spring of 1976. The package will include new liner notes by Dennis McNally.

Though The Last Record Album was not Little Feat's final effort, it did mark a significant change in the band's process. Frontman, producer and songwriter Lowell George ceded some compositional ground to keyboardist Bill Payne and guitarist Paul Barrere. Their growing interest in jazz fusion would push the band away from the southern-inspired boogie rock George favored. (He sang lead on five of the album's nine tracks, and wrote or co-wrote only three.) Despite this increasingly fractious arrangement, fans and critics praised the high points of songs like "All That You Dream" and "Long Distance Love" (the latter of which would be covered by Feat friend Nicolette Larson) and the band's live prowess - soon to be preserved on Waiting for Columbus and on bountiful display in this box - was impossible to argue. Additional bonus material includes demos (including the unreleased "Fool on the Avenue"), a newly-streamable version of "Long Distance Love" and the original version of "Hi Roller," recorded during the Last Record Album sessions and long considered for inclusion on the album. (The track was even included on the LP jacket, albeit crossed out with "Maybe next time" scrawled next to it. The Barrere-penned track opened their next album, 1977's Time Loves a Hero - the last Little Feat album to be completed in George's lifetime.)

Pre-order pages for all formats are starting to activate; the links and a full track list of each disc can be found below. (As an Amazon affiliate, we earn from qualifying purchases.)

So . . this Lowell George era series leaves only the eponymous debut album not superdeluxified circa 2025. Why?

Jason Jones, who's producing the Little Feat archival releases, has said the expanded debut will happen, along with an expanded CD release of Lowell George's solo album, which got the RSD deluxe vinyl treatment already.

Also, it seems like we should count Time Loves a Hero and Down on the Farm as "Lowell George era" albums, right? I mean, I'm much less committed to purchasing deluxe editions of those than the debut and Lowell's album, but who knows. This series has been so well done, I could be convinced.

About time for this great album to get expanded by Little Feat.
Hope Rhino also does an expanded editions for "Time Loves A Hero",
"Down On The Farm" and Lowell's sole LP "Thanks I'll Eat It Here" in CD format.
    Thank you Rhino...from a 50+ year Feat Fan !!!
