Green Day's sixth album, 2000's Warning, arrived nearly three years after the band's multi-platinum Nimrod. It built on the expansive sound of Nimrod by incorporating even more varied textures drawing on pop and folk styles. Now, 25 years later, Billie Joe Armstrong, Mike Dirnt, and Tre Cool are revisiting Warning in a new Super Deluxe Edition (available on both vinyl and CD) due November 14 from Reprise Records.
With longtime producer Rob Cavallo moving up to the executive producer's position, Green Day self-produced Warning - their first self-produced major label effort. (R.E.M. producer Scott Litt was originally brought in, but creative differences led to his departure from the project.) The band was emboldened by the success of the acoustic pop-flavored "Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)" on Nimrod to continue pursuing a path beyond snarling punk; Warning would continue broadening the band's musical palette. Billie Jo Armstrong was inspired by Bob Dylan's 1965 LP Bringing It All Back Home (Dylan's first album after going electric) to continue pushing the envelope. It's a measure of the band's success that critics compared various songs on the LP to the diverse likes of The Beatles, Petula Clark, The Mamas and The Papas, KISS, The Kinks, and even Threepenny Opera composer Kurt Weill. Guest musicians included Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers' Benmont Tench, jazz saxophonist Gary Meek, and string arranger David Campbell.
With the politically-charged "Minority" as the lead single - one which topped the Billboard Modern Rock chart for five weeks - as well as the title track (No. 3 Alternative Airplay/No. 7 Adult Alternative Airplay/No. 1 UK Rock & Metal) and "Waiting" (No. 26 Alternative Airplay), Warning premiered at No. 4 on the Billboard 200 and earned a Gold certification. In the years since, it's sold over three million copies worldwide and nearly one billion streams. It fared particularly well in international territories, too, charting in Australia, Canada, Italy, Japan, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom, among others. Though it was Green Day's first major label album to miss multi-platinum status in the U.S., it's since become recognized as a high point of the band's catalogue.
The upcoming Warning follows the basic format and box style (a clamshell for the CDs) of past Super Deluxe sets from the Green Day discography including the 20th anniversary edition of American Idiot (2024) and the (almost) 30th anniversary reappraisal of Dookie (2023). The 4CD or 5LP box contains a new remaster of the original album plus eight original demos, two new mixes, various B-sides and rarities, and a previously unreleased concert recorded at SHIBUYA-AX in Tokyo in March 2001. The LPs in the vinyl box are pressed on Green Galaxy, Yellow Marble, and Orange Galaxy vinyl. A 24-page booklet, poster, patch, button set, and sticker sheet round out that package, while the CD version boasts a 32-page booklet plus the patch, button set, and sticker.
The demo of "Castaway" is now streaming, and the full 4CD and 5LP box sets of Warning arrive in stores from Reprise on November 14. You'll find the pre-order links and track listing below. As an Amazon affiliate, we earn from qualifying purchases.

St. Jimmy, Re-Canonized: Green Day Prep 20th Anniversary Deluxe Edition of 'American Idiot'
Green Day and WB are so generous with these box sets, yes, the form factor is small, but the contents certainly aren't. Greedy KISS could learn a lot for the Gree Day boys, who obviously aren't out to fleece their fans. Day one purchase for me!
