The new Bottom Line Archive Series, which launched earlier this year with volumes from The Brecker Brothers, Willie Nile, and Kenny Rankin, continues on June 30 with a new wave of titles all recorded at the late, great New York venue once located on West 4th Street in Greenwich Village. Concerts from Harry Chapin and Janis Ian, plus two various-artists compilations, will be released on Bottom Line Records on that date.
Legendary singer-songwriter Harry Chapin's January 1981 set at The Bottom Line was released as a 2-CD set in 1998 as part of The Bottom Line Encore Collection series. Now, in anticipation of the concert's 35th anniversary, the Archive Series is reissuing and remastering the original title and adding a third disc premiering a previously unreleased 88-minute show. (Due to the limitations of CD space, the first two discs have been reconfigured, so the new concert actually begins on the second CD here.) The label explains that, "to demarcate the second show, we've started with the club's pre-show room ambience - exactly what you would have heard sitting in the audience, moments before the band took the stage. It's another riveting performance and as always, the band gives their impeccable all. Harry's voice may show some wear 'n tear by the time they come around to 'Circle,' but it only adds to this vivid snapshot of an incredible artist who, having given his all, shows that there's still something there left to give."
The late Chapin's release is joined by that of another folk hero, the great Janis Ian. The "At Seventeen" singer-songwriter's 1980 Bottom Line stand was chronicled on a 1999 Encore Collection release. Now, that edition has been remastered for its 35th anniversary, and as before, the release contains two bonus tracks culled from Ian's 1991 performances at the club. Country and bluegrass artist Kathy Mattea writes in 2015 of the new reissue, "This is the great Janis Ian, in her prime, live, and at a legendary venue. The voice is timeless and instantly identifiable, conversational, totally unique. The musicianship is impeccable, as always. The songwriting is far beyond her years, like channeling some wisdom born of lifetimes of experience. For those of us who couldn't be there, this is a rare gift - a memorable evening captured in time, so that we can go back and have a glimpse, a small taste of a very special performance. How lucky are we?"
The Bottom Line Archive Series rounds out its June 30 offerings with two volumes of In Their Own Words. The first volume, hosted by radio personality Vin Scelsa, was originally issued on CD in 1994. Its performances, all prefaced by introductions, features intimate recordings by an eclectic group including Jimmy Webb ("Wichita Lineman"), Dion ("King of the New York Streets"), Joey Ramone ("I Wanna Be Sedated"), Lucinda Williams ("Positively 4th Street"), Ric Ocasek ("Just What I Needed") and Richard Thompson ("I Feel So Good"). In Their Own Words Volume 2, from 1996, arrives with a similarly genre-bending roster of artists such as Felix Cavaliere of The Rascals, Chris Difford and Glenn Tilbrook of Squeeze, David Johansen, Jill Sobule, John Cale and Pete Seeger. Vin Scelsa again hosts.
All four releases from The Bottom Line Archive Series are due on June 30, and can be pre-ordered at the links below!

William Keats says
The two In Their Own Words compilations seem to be straight reissues of two Razor & Tie CDs that came out in the 1990s. So apart from the cover art, nothing new here. Of course, the music is still worthwhile. Richard Thompson accompanies Dave Alvin on his song "Andersonville" and also appears on Barrett Strong's track, along with Shawn Colvin.
Note for editor: in the track list for Volume 2, "Mustang Solo" should be "Mustang Sally"!

Guessing there's not much chance of the Billy Joel or Bruce Springsteen shows from the mid-70s released, is there?
Maybe the Bruce one will get issued as part of his Archive series at some point. I have a bootleg of Billy's show, but it's sped up a bit and sounds odd.

Wolfgang's Vault streamed a few Bottom Line shows by Loudon Wainwright III. It would be nice to see material from those concerts released as part of this series.
