In honor of its 20th anniversary, Rhino Records is expanding and reissuing Tori Amos' third album, Boys for Pele, with a host of rare and unreleased bonus tracks.
Her first self-produced album after splitting with producer and partner Eric Rosse, Boys for Pele (named for the Hawaiian fire goddess) found Amos taking the power back from the male figures in her life. "I was at the point I could not answer to anybody," she said of her bid for independence. "I'd been answering my whole life to some patriarchal figure."
Recorded primarily in an Irish church, the record's diverse musical palate (featuring Amos on vocals, piano, harmonium, clavichord and harpsichord, plus arrangements for strings, brass, church bells and even bagpipes) and hyper-personal lyrics attracted fans old and new (it became her first Top 10 album and, at No. 2, her highest-charting in the U.S.)--even as it polarized and confounded members of the critical establishment.
The expanded Boys for Pele will feature new liner notes penned by Amos and a 21-track bonus disc of demos, B-sides and alternate versions, four of which ("To the Fair Motormaids of Japan," "Sucker," a remix of "Talula" and an alternate take of "In the Springtime of His Voodoo") are previously unreleased. The reissue will be out November 18; the same day, a double vinyl reissue of the original album will also be available.
After the jump, you'll find order links and a full track list!
