Strung Out: Wendy & Lisa's "Eroica" To Be Expanded by Cherry Red

Looking for something Prince-related to tide you over before the Purple Rain reissue hits stores? Cherry Pop Records is reissuing Eroica, the third album from Prince's longtime collaborators Wendy & Lisa.

Wendy Melvoin and Lisa Coleman were already several years removed from their split with Prince (who disbanded The Revolution in 1986); in 1987, they put their only pop single on the U.S. charts with the criminally underrated pop nugget "Waterfall." By the release of Eroica, the duo's contract moved in America from Columbia to Virgin, where they had always been signed in the United Kingdom. This time, they reconvened in the studio with producer Tony Berg, who'd helmed Michael Penn's hit from the same year, "No Myth," for an LP of dreamy, dark, romantic psych-pop. Penn and Berg co-wrote the Eroica track "Mother of Pearl"; elsewhere, Wendy's twin sister Susannah and k.d. lang offer vocals, her father Mike Melvoin arranges strings on single "Don't Try to Tell Me," Lisa's brother David offers cello and fellow Prince cohort Eric Leeds is heard on horns.

Though critics enjoyed Eroica--Entertainment Weekly called it "a striking record: complex, varied, intensely personal, and hard to classify in any pop genre"--none of the songs enjoyed much sustained success on either side of the Atlantic, with lead single "Strung Out" just missing the U.K. Top 40. But a wealth of bonus material makes this reissue of the album worth picking up for fans: an extra disc offers seven B-sides and remixes, plus four rare piano improvisations by Coleman released on a bonus EP with select original U.K. copies of the album. (True funk soldiers will recognize "Minneapolis #1" as "Visions," the intended opening track off Prince and The Revolution's aborted final album Dream Factory, which later metamorphosed into Sign "O" The Times in 1987.)

With The Revolution having reunited and touring this year and that Purple Rain set closer than ever to fan's hands, the expanded Eroica couldn't come at a better time. It's in U.K. stores this Friday, June 9.
