After the rush of the holiday season and the New Year, we now settle into the winter months, but that still doesn't mean that there isn't a lot of music to talk about. Today, we've got new of some of Real Gone's titles hitting just under a month from now on February 2.
First up is a CD reissue of an obscure title featuring two members of the Faces: Mahoney's Last Stand - Original Motion Picture Soundtrack by Ronnie Lane and Ron Wood. If you have never seen or heard of the film, that's not so surprising. The low-budget Canadian film was produced, co-written, co-directed by, and starred Alexis Kanner as a city-dweller who gives up everything and moves to the country to become a homesteader. The movie also starred Maud Adams and Sam Waterston. Kanner was friends with Lane and asked him to compose a soundtrack for the film in 1972. Lane enlisted Wood as the pair were waiting for Rod Stewart to arrive to begin the recording sessions for the Faces' album Ooh La La. The album has a country/folk feeling with half the songs being instrumentals. One track, "'Mona' The Blues" was a 1970 Faces outtake, but was newly re-recorded with a new Wood lead vocal for this project. Several prominent figures in the British music scene came to play on the record including Pete Townsend, Rich Grech, Ian Stewart, Bobby Keys, Jim Price, Micky Waller, Bruce Rowland and fellow Faces members Ian McLagan and Kenney Jones.
However, the film never saw a proper theatrical release and the album was not released until 1976. By that point, the Faces had broken up, Lane had begun a solo career and Wood had joined The Rolling Stones. The record did not, to say the least, get much fanfare at the time and many incorrectly assumed it was a reunion project between Lane and Wood. It has seen limited release on CD and nothing within the last 15 years. Real Gone's new edition presents the original album sequence and features new liner notes by Richie Unterberger.
Next up is a new volume in Real Gone's continuing Grateful Dead series. The label began bringing the Road Trips live series to general retail last year and now it is releasing Road Trips Vol. 4 No.3: Denver '73. This 3-CD set contains the full concert from November 21, 1973 at the Denver Coliseum in Denver, Colorado. It also contains three songs from the concert the night before at the same venue. This concert came a little over a month after the release of the group's sixth studio album, Wake of the Flood. That album was the first not to feature founding member Ron "Pigpen" McKernan, who had passed away March, 1973. This set was first available through the band's website back in April, 2011.
The final item on Real Gone's slate is a limited vinyl reissue of Trevor Jones and Randy Edelman's score to The Last of the Mohicans. Michael Mann's 1992 film adaptation of the James Fenimore Cooper novel starred Daniel Day-Lewis and was one of the many filmed versions of the book. It was met with critical acclaim at the time and has kept a good reputation. Mann initially approached Jones to record an electronic score for the movie. However, late in the process, it was decided that an orchestral score would be more appropriate. Jones worked to refashion his work, but did not have time to complete everything due to the editing process of the film and Randy Edelman was brought in to finish. Both composers received co-credit, thus making their work ineligible for an Academy Award. When the soundtrack album was released, it was ordered so that Jones' work was presented first, followed by Edelman's. Two other artists are also represented. The "Main Theme" of the film is actually "The Gael," written by Scottish singer-songwriter Dougie MacLean from his 1990 album The Search. The final track on the album is the song "I Will Find You," performed by Irish band Clannad. Real Gone's new 2-LP edition comes in a gatefold package featuring production stills with sepia-toned vinyl and is limited to 1,000 copies.
