Folk singer Jewel will revisit her debut album with a expanded box set edition on Craft Recordings in November.
The 25th anniversary edition of Pieces of You, due November 20, will be available in three formats. A 4CD super deluxe box set in a hardback portfolio book package combines the original album with three bonus discs: a set of demos (19 of 20 previously unreleased), a collection of B-sides and rarities (including seven unreleased outtakes), and a fully unreleased collection of live material from the singer's breakthrough performances at the Inner Change Coffeehouse in San Diego, California - performances that led to a record label bidding war in 1994. The album itself will also be appended with five bonus tracks, including three original single versions of tracks that were heard everywhere through the late '90s. (A smaller deluxe edition, available on two CDs or four LPs, will include the expanded album and the B-sides/rarities disc. Both versions will feature expanded liner notes with contributions from the artist, including rare photos and poetry.)
Pieces of You quickly entered pop music legend within two years of its release in 1995, sending three singles to the Top 20 of the Billboard Hot 100: "Who Will Save Your Soul," "You Were Meant for Me" and "Foolish Games" (both of which reached No. 2 as a double-sided single). The album itself reached No. 4 on the Billboard 200 and sold more than 12 million copies, one of the best-selling debuts in history. The album was also nominated for three Grammy Awards, including two nods for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance and a Best New Artist nomination.
It seemed like an incredible overnight victory, but Jewel Kilcher's discovery was hard fought: born and raised in the Alaskan wilderness (without so much as indoor plumbing), she and her father earned a living by performing together when she was a child. Her strong, unique voice (with a knack for yodeling) earned her a scholarship to study classical technique as a teen; after graduating, she performed on the San Diego coffeehouse circuit while living out of her van. Atlantic Records had her record Pieces of You between Inner Change Coffeehouse and at Neil Young's studio on Broken Arrow Ranch, backed by members of Young's early '70s Stray Gators band.
To commemorate this milestone, Jewel will livestream a special performance at the Sheridan Opera House in Telluride, CO on the day of the reissue's release. For the first time, she will perform the album in its entirety, recorded by multiple cameras and featuring folk guitarist Steve Poltz of The Rugburns, who co-wrote "You Were Meant for Me." Tickets to the stream are available through Jewel's official webstore, on their own or with bundles that include the expanded album, a lithograph reproduction of an original flier she created for an Inner Change performance, and even a special live Q&A that will wholly benefit the Inspiring Children Foundation.
