It was nearly one year ago to the day – September 13, 2010 – that The Second Disc brought you news of four exciting collections planned from Collectors’ Choice Music: Complete Singles collections from beloved sixties gals Petula Clark, Connie Stevens, Joanie Sommers and Shelby Flint.

Shortly thereafter, on October 7, news broke that the Clark set had been cancelled.  Gordon Anderson, the then-veep of Collectors’ Choice, confirmed to The Second Disc that “at the eleventh hour, Petula’s management decided that they did not want the project to come out.”

The other three releases were still on the schedule last October, but they, too, were soon scuttled when Collectors’ Choice abandoned its thriving reissue label.  Good things do often come to those who wait, however.  Flash-forward to the present day, and Anderson has launched Real Gone Music with business partner Gabby Castellana.  Surely many smiles came when Real Gone tweeted last Friday evening that three of the label’s debut releases would be the long-in-gestation Complete Warner Bros. Singles of Connie Stevens and Joanie Sommers, and Complete Valiant Singles of Shelby Flint!

November 8 is the new date that you can expect all three collections to be released by Real Gone.  In the meantime, hit the jump for more info, including track listings and discography!

Connie Stevens (real name: Concetta Rosalie Ann Ingoglia) was born in 1938 to a musical family led by singers Teddy Stevens, a.k.a. Peter Ingoglia, and Eleanor McGinley.  Though she sang from an early age with groups like The Foremost (later to provide roots for the all-male Lettermen) and The Three Debs, Connie first found fame as an actress. Signed to Warner Bros. Pictures, she appeared in movies and starred in television shows, most famously Hawaiian Eye from 1959 to 1962.  She portrayed the role of Cricket Blake opposite Robert Conrad’s Tom Lopaka.  Stevens famously guested on the popular show 77 Sunset Strip in 1959, scoring a hit single on the fledgling Warner Bros. Records label with "Kookie Kookie Lend Me Your Comb," a duet with Sunset Strip’s Edd “Kookie” Byrnes.  Warner Bros. released her debut album, a collection of standards, but further pop success ensued with youth-oriented singles like "Sixteen Reasons” and "Too Young to Go Steady.”  Real Gone’s compilation will collect all ofher singles and B-sides from that era, many of which have not previously been released on CD.

Joanie Sommers might be best known for the 1962 single "Johnny Get Angry," written by the team of Sherman Edwards (the musical 1776) and Hal David and cut by Joanie as she entered her 20s.  Sommers’ innocent narrator is rather miffed that her meek boyfriend doesn’t object when others cut into their dance:  “Oh, Johnny get angry, Johnny get mad/Give me the biggest lecture I ever had/I want a brave man, I want a cave man/Johnny, show me that you care, really care for me.”  This offbeat ode to the brutish boy of her dreams sent Sommers’ career into orbit, and she made an impression not only on the pop charts but on television.  Joanie was a frequent guest on variety and talk shows, and also a prominent jingle singer as “The Pepsi Girl.” Sommers later proved herself to be a top-notch interpreter and vocalist of jazz standards, but this compilation is devoted to her pop best.  Like Connie, Joanie also had a connection to Edd Byrnes, and scored a hit with “Kookie's Love Song (While Dancing).”

The pop career of Shelby Flint ran roughly parallel to that of Joanie and Connie.  Real Gone’s set brings together her complete singles for the Valiant label, also the original home of The Association.  Born in 1939, Flint has two hit singles under her belt, 1961’s “Angel on My Shoulder” and 1966’s vocal version of the Vince Guaraldi standard “Cast Your Fate to the Wind,” both of which will appear on this new set.  Esteemed jazz critic Leonard Feather described Flint as a "technically flawless performer with a pure sound and a wide range,” while Joni Mitchell cited her as an important, early influence.  When she was signed to Valiant, she was already a proficient guitarist and pianist, and in later years, she worked with such jazz artists as Chick Corea, Al Jarreau and Tim Weston.  Flint also memorably sang “Someone’s Waiting For You,” the Academy Award-nominated theme to Walt Disney Productions’ 1977 motion picture The Rescuers, starring Bob Newhart and Eva Gabor as two very brave animated mice.
