Elvis Costello is looking back at his 25 years of music with the late Burt Bacharach on this lavish new 4-CD/2-LP box set (also available in smaller formats).  The Songs of Bacharach and Costello features four distinctive albums:

• A newly remastered version of the duo's acclaimed, Grammy Award-winning 1998 album Painted from Memory;
• Taken from Life, an all-new anthology that reflects the development of Painted from Memory into a (sadly abortive) Broadway musical shepherded by television's Chuck Lorre (The Big Bang Theory, Two and a Half Men) and Tony Award winning playwright and Bacharach collaborator Steven Sater (Some Lovers, Spring Awakening);
• Because It's a Lonely World - Live, a collection of concert performances, mostly piano-and-vocal from Costello and Steve Nieve; and
• Costello Sings Bacharach and David, a through-the-years collection of Elvis paying tribute to Burt's timeless songbook.

The vinyl component features the remastered Painted from Memory and a six-song highlights version of Taken from Life, with all five of the previously unrecorded compositions for the stage musical plus a live version of "What's Her Name Today?"  The box set has been produced by Costello and Steve Berkowitz and remastered by Bob Ludwig from the original tapes.  One 20-page book includes photos by William Claxton and Rankin, memorabilia, and a 10,000-word essay from Costello; another has full lyrics.  In total, the box set premieres 19 previously unreleased tracks, of which five are previously unreleased compositions from the duo and a sixth is heard with lyrics for the very first time.  Read more here, and click here for our full review!

Genesis, BBC Broadcasts (Atlantic/Rhino)

BBC Broadcasts, curated by founding keyboardist Tony Banks and longtime engineer Nick Davis, offers a trove of concert audio from all the major eras of Genesis from 1970 to 1998.  Most of this material is previously unreleased; a few Peter Gabriel-era tracks were released on a 1998 box set, one 1980 Lyceum Theatre track made it to the group's Three Sides Live in 1982, and the 1987 Wembley set was issued on video and DVD over the years. A total of 24 of the 53 tracks on the 5CD set will be issued as a triple-vinyl set, with all songs making their debut on the format. Frank Zappa, Zappa '80: Mudd Club/Munich (Zappa Records/UMe)

Zappa Records and UMe have rescued another two concerts from the late artist's storied Vault.  The 3-CD set Zappa '80: Mudd Club/Munich boasts two very different shows: one from New York's tiny, 240-capacity Mudd Club, and other from Munich's 12,000-seat Olympiahalle arena.  Both shows feature the short-lived lineup of Zappa, vocalist Ike Willis and Ray White, bassist Arthur Barrow, keyboardist Tommy Mars, and drummer David Logeman.  Only two tracks from these shows ("Love of My Life" from NYC and "You Didn't Try to Call Me" from Munich) have been previously issued as part of the You Can't Do That on Stage Anymore series.  Bernie Grundman has remastered all audio for this package.  Both concerts are also available as standalone vinyl sets.  Get more info here.

John Hartford, Aereo-Plane (Real Gone Music) (Amazon U.S. / Amazon U.K. / Amazon Canada)

Real Gone reissues John Hartford's 1971 classic on vinyl, marking the first time the album has appeared on that format in 50 years.  It comes on "bone" white vinyl and features and inner sleeve with lyrics and liner notes from Hartford expert Skip Heller.  It is limited to 1,000 copies.

The South Side Movement, The South Side Movement (Real Gone Music) (Amazon U.S. / Amazon U.K. / Amazon Canada)

RGM has also uncovered a lost R&B gem from 1973.  The South Side Movement's "I' Been Watching You," from this debut album, became a top 20 R&B hit and has been sampled by artists such as The Beastie Boys, Beck, Erykah Badu, Jadakiss, and more.  The new reissue is the first time the album has been reissued in the LP format.  It comes on "clearwater blue" vinyl.

Don Cherry, Hear & Now (Real Gone Music) (Amazon U.S. / Amazon U.K. / Amazon Canada)

Here's the first vinyl reissue of Don Cherry's 1977 Atlantic album.  Hear & Now, produced by Narada Michael Walden, features eight songs, mostly all written by Cherry.  His supporting cast on the album includes Michael Brecker, Collin Walcott, Marcus Miller, Tony Williams, Steve Jordan, and Stan Samole.  Real Gone's new reissue is the first American vinyl reissue of Hear & Now.

Hard rock band Saigon Kick's third album, originally issued in 1993, makes its vinyl premiere this week; it's pressed on black vinyl.

RGM delivers another '90s vinyl premiere with this 1997 release from The Bottle Rockets, now appearing on "coke bottle" clear vinyl and limited to 1,000 units.

Various Artists, Music from the Motion Picture "The Devil Wears Prada" (Real Gone Music) (Amazon U.S. / Amazon U.K. / Amazon Canada)

The soundtrack album to The Devil Wears Prada, released a couple of weeks after the film starring Anne Hathaway and Meryl Streep hit theatres in July 2006, boasts hits from various artists including Madonna, U2, Alanis Morrissette, Jamiroquai, and Beck.  Many of the songs were heard in the film.  The album concludes with a suite of score music by Theodore Shapiro.  Real Gone's new vinyl version marks the soundtrack's first appearance on the format.  It features a full-color inner sleeve and comes on black and white marble vinyl.

Jay Migliori, Equinox (Omnivore Recordings) (Amazon U.S. / Amazon U.K. / Amazon Canada)

Omnivore has uncovered a previously unreleased 1984 album from late Los Angeles session saxophonist Jay Migliori (The Beach Boys, The Byrds, Phil Spector).  Equinox features Migliori joined by pianist Joe Lettieri, drummer Chiz Harris, Conte Condoli on trumpet, and Jim Crutcher on bass on songs by Lettieri, John Coltrane, Thelonious Monk, and others. Omnivore's premiere release - featuring the complete original album plus three alternate takes - has been mixed by Brian Kehew and mastered by Michael Graves, and features new liner notes by Cary Baker.  Available on CD and digital formats.

Sheena Easton, Take My Time [CD/DVD] (Cherry Pop) (Amazon U.S. / Amazon U.K. / Amazon Canada)

Cherry Pop continues its definitive series of Sheena Easton reissues with this deluxe CD/DVD edition of the singer's 1981 EMI debut featuring the hits "Modern Girl," "When He Shines," and U.S. chart-topper "Morning Train (Nine to Five)."  Seven bonus tracks have been added including four original B-sides and three previously unreleased tracks (one outtake, "Have You Heard the Rumour," and backing tracks for "Morning Train" and "Modern Girl").  The DVD has five promotional videos ("Modern Girl," "Morning Train," "One Man Woman," "Take My Time," and "For Your Eyes Only").  Everything has been newly remastered by Simon Murphy from the original tapes, and a 28-page booklet with notes by reissue producer Adam Mattera reveals the story of the album.  A vinyl LP of the original album is due on March 24.

Willie Nelson, I Don't Know a Thing About Love (Legacy) (Amazon U.S. / Amazon U.K. / Amazon Canada)

The tireless Willie Nelson is back with his latest long-player for Legacy Recordings.  I Don't Know a Thing About Love finds the legendary vocalist paying tribute to an old pal, songwriter Harlan Howard (1927-2002), an inductee into both the Country Music Hall of Fame and Songwriters Hall of Fame.  Nelson brings his burnished voice to new renditions of such classic Howard tunes as "The Chokin' Kind," "Tiger by the Tail," and "Busted."  I Don't Know a Thing About Love has been produced by Buddy Cannon and features Nelson (and Trigger, natch!) accompanied by Larry Paxton on bass; Lonnie Wilson on drums; Bobby Terry, James Mitchell, and Mike Johnson on guitars; Mickey Raphael on harmonica; Jim "Moose" Brown on piano and keyboards; and Wyatt Beard and Melonie Cannon on background vocals.  Available on CD and digital, with an exclusive vinyl edition coming later in the year from the Vinyl Me, Please record club.
