Iconoclassic Records is ushering in 2025 with the newest addition to its ongoing Dwight Twilley reissue series - and this one's a doozy, with a whopping 25 tracks (eleven of which are previously unreleased). On January 31, the label will reissue the late artist's 1981 album Scuba Divers as Scuba Divers: Blueprint Edition, with the subtitle nodding to Twilley's much-coveted unreleased album.
Twilley, the singer-songwriter's first solo album following two acclaimed albums with The Dwight Twilley Band, originally arrived in 1979 on Arista Records in the United States (and was reissued last month in an expanded edition by Iconoclassic). But seeing a release for his second solo LP was a long, drawn-out process. Sessions for the album originally entitled Blueprint began in 1978 with the involvement of veteran producer-arranger-composer/Phil Spector associate Jack Nitzsche; Twilley intended it to be his second album for Clive Davis' Arista Records label. But Davis reportedly rejected the LP after Twilley's single "Somebody to Love" failed to ignite the charts. Due to a web of contract and legal issues, a new Dwight Twilley album didn't arrive until 1982. That was Scuba Divers, initially issued on the EMI America label. The album was a blend of Blueprint material and newly-recorded tracks.
Iconoclassic reveals in its press release that "Dwight never stopped writing and cutting throughout the enforced interval since his 1979 solo debut, Twilley. Along the path, dozens of his very best songs and performances came in and out of consideration as numerous album sequences were compiled then recompiled." The new Scuba Divers: Blueprint Edition is a deep dive into this creatively fertile period of Twilley's remarkable career. A whopping fifteen bonus tracks, beginning with the original 7-inch single edit of "Somebody to Love," have been appended to the original EMI America album sequence. Eleven tracks are previously unreleased, and everything is put into full context in the booklet which boasts essays by music historian Howie Edelson (who also provided liner notes for Twilley) and the compilation producer, Iconoclassic's Jeremy Holiday. Previously unseen photos by Zox from both the Blueprint and Scuba Divers sessions are also featured.
All of the audio has been newly remastered by Vic Anesini at Battery Studios from the original master tapes. This is the first reissue of Scuba Divers in 15 years and is fully authorized by the Estate of Dwight Twilley.
