CURRENT CONTESTS:

Billy Joel Russia Fb banner

CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR WINNER, FABIO TURSI!

Now’s as good a time to be a fan of Billy Joel, what with his astounding live renaissance (anchored by an ongoing residence at Madison Square Garden) and last week’s release of A Matter of Trust: The Bridge to Russia. This handsome multi-disc set chronicling Joel’s historic 1987 tour of the Soviet Union expands the original Концерт LP with 11 unreleased tracks across two CDs and features both an expansion of the original Live in Leningrad video program and a newly-created documentary in which Billy and his friends, family and co-workers reflect on their journey to a unique land at a politically uncertain time.

We at The Second Disc want you to WIN A COPY OF THIS 2CD/1DVD SET! All you gotta do is this: like The Second Disc on Facebook, like our post announcing this contest and leave a comment! Favorite Billy Joel song, favorite memory of the Piano Man in concert, testimonial from a trip to Russia – anything will get you, as they say, “in it to win it”! But you know we love our non-Facebooking fans, too, so an e-mail to theseconddisc (at) gmail (dot) com with the subject line “Billy Joel” also enters you into the giveaway!

We’re going to pick a winner next Wednesday, June 4, at 11:59 pm announce our winner on Facebook and the site the next day, so keep your eyes peeled! Trust us, this is a set you’re not going to want to miss!

The contest is open to all and not affiliated with Facebook. Winner will be chosen at the discretion of The Second Disc. Limit one entry per person, please.

  1. Not everyone is on Facebook……….

    August 13, 2012 at 12:24

    • Sorry, Mike! We will be running some of our future giveaways via email, as we’ve done in the past, and we sincerely hope you’ll participate in those! Thanks for reading!

    • Well said Mike

    • Thanks, Mike. I couldn’t agree more.

      August 13, 2012 at 19:50

      • Again, we’re sorry to disappoint anybody. Like our friends at the labels, we have to endeavor to reach as broad an audience as possible. In today’s rapidly changing climate, a major part of that strategy is developing our readership through as many means of social media as possible. It’s not an exclusionary tactic, but rather an inclusionary one. Rest assured, we will continue to run email-based contests in the future for those of you not on Facebook, while continuing to gear other giveaways towards FB, Twitter, etc. Thanks for understanding, everybody.

  2. These comment boxes for Second Disc are becoming a real rarity these days. So many other websites insist on going through Facebook/Twitter whatever, so it’s good that we can leave comments here without going through hoops… please keep it like this.

  3. How do you know who is liking the facebook pages to enter the contests or just liking the page just because they like it?

    Zubb

    August 14, 2012 at 23:34

    • No fear, Zubb. As stated in the contest requirements, an entrant must like both pages AND leave a comment in the Beat thread. Fulfilling all three requirements constitutes an entry in the contest! Thanks!

  4. Any chance the Graceland contest may be amended? I’ve been checking the Facebook page periodically since it was announced and the like counter has stalled for weeks, probably because everyone is holding out to be the lucky #1000 (I know I am…). With over 300 likes still needed to get to that point, it’s gonna take a while.

  6. I’m not on Facebook either so, here’s yet another fab contest I can’t enter that I would really love to have a chance to win.

  7. Facebook. Even Spotify require a Facebook account to engage with them. Keep the comments page please SD, it’s a great resource for extra info and discussions.
Ps If I could pick one reissue by Suede I would pick A New Morning. It was a great bounce back album after Head Music, which still had it moments here and there. Edsel did a fantastic job on the Suede titles, really putting some acts to shame with the wealth of material.

    • No fear, on-site comments are certainly not going anywhere. Rest assured, we will continue to run email-based contests in the future for those of you not on Facebook, while continuing to gear other giveaways towards FB, Twitter, etc. as we endeavor to broaden our reach to everyone. Thanks for understanding, folks.

  11. I really want that Magical Mystery Tour Blu Ray! I used to have the VHS boxset with Hard Day’s, Help, Magical, and First U.S. Visit – watched them endlessly as a kid along with The Compleat Beatles documentary. So happy ‘Tour’ is finally available again, haven’t seen it in YEARS!! Hope to win a copy : )

  13. Here we go with yet another contest that’s only for Facebook users. Joe, please tell the labels to make these contests open to both FB users and NON users so that we all have a chance at winning instead of being shut out. I really would’ve liked a chance to win these early Steve Miller Band CD’s.

  14. Here’s hoping Omnivore releases the Stack-A-Tracks disc to the general public before the end of the world as the Mayans predicted!

  15. The Jellyfish performance of “The King Is Half-Undressed” from Letterman (find it on YouTube) is incredible. Drumming (standing up, no less) + singing, plus perfect harmonies. Swoon. No band has ever been able to equal Jellyfish’s talent…

    Lloyd

    December 17, 2012 at 17:17

  19. Both group histories speak for themselves..Booker T place in R&B is set and Al Hudson has had both success in the dance/disco arena and R&B circles..And besides, both CD’s are good..Plain and simple.

    William Holloway

    April 4, 2013 at 01:17

    • You got that right William Holloway ..the Booker T cd is an gem you really can`t go wrong with Michael Stokes in the production chair.

      Gunnar Nilsson

      April 4, 2013 at 16:27

  20. Here we go again yet another Facebook Contest that’s not for those of us who do not have Facebook. Why not make it available to both readers ?!

    Steve

    April 30, 2013 at 01:11

    • Thanks for sharing your concerns, Steve. Just to reiterate something we’ve stated here in the past – Like our friends at the labels, we have to endeavor to reach as broad an audience as possible. A major part of that strategy is developing and growing our readership through social media. It’s not an exclusionary tactic, but rather an inclusionary one. Rest assured, we will continue to run email-based contests in the future for those of you not on Facebook, while continuing to gear other giveaways towards FB, Twitter, etc. In fact, the majority of our recent contests have been open via email as well as FB. Unfortunately, it’s not possible for every contest. Thanks for understanding.

  21. Oh look, another Facebook only compo. So I and loads of others can’t enter. Though personally I’d rather win a load of those Edsel Bananarama reissues….

  24. Well, here are we again with another Facebook-only contest (for the Humble Pie release). Bummer. Oh well.

    November 7, 2013 at 21:54

  25. Hey Joe, you say “we have to endeavor to reach as broad an audience as possible”. If your contests were open to people that aren’t on Facebook as well ones that are you would be reaching a broader audience.

    Ernie

    February 6, 2014 at 15:06

    • Hey there Ernie, read the rules again for this current (Aretha and Otis) contest – it’s open to EVERYBODY, via email or Facebook! :-)

A lot of factors play into whether a contest will be open to non-FB users, but rest assured – whenever it’s possible, we DO open our contests to email entrants.

      Thanks as always for reading!

      Joe Marchese

      February 6, 2014 at 15:39

      • Thanks for the heads up Joe. Guess I just got caught up in all of the comments!

        February 6, 2014 at 19:59

  26. I think if Otis had lived into the late 60s, he would have been a mega-star! I can envision that he would have been THE breakout artist at Woodstock, even bigger than Sly Stone! He would have been the true “King” of Soul. And, of course, Aretha will never relinquish her title as “Queen.” God bless them both. Our lives are richer because of them.

  27. Hi Joe,
I won the Aretha Franklin boxset in your last contest and I haven’t received it yet. Can you look into it for me please.
    Thanks,
