Late Night Release Round-Up: Motown Around the World, Arcadia Date, Soundtrack Notes

  • The above picture, from Hip-O Select’s Twitter page, indicates that Motown Around the World is inching ever closer to a release. The compilation, teased by the label since last year, is said to be a comprehensive set of the many foreign-language versions of classic Motown hits as well as a few international singles only available in those territories. Expect cuts from Stevie Wonder, The Supremes, The Four Tops, The Temptations and more.
  • Another nugget from the social-networking pipeline: Duran Duran’s official Twitter feed confirmed that the long-gestating deluxe reissue of Arcadia’s So Red the Rose will finally see release in the U.S. on April 13 from EMI. The triple-disc set includes the original album and every 7″ and 12″ single mix and B-side along with the original So Red the Rose video album, never before released on DVD.
  • Soundtrack label La La Land Records has got a great new title from the Warner Bros. vaults: a double-disc offering of music from the 1990 TV version of The Flash. This set, limited to 3000 copies, features the score to the original pilot and eight other episodes, all composed by Shirley Walker (the late, great composer notable for such works as the Final Destination trilogy and a good chunk of score for Batman: The Animated Series). Interestingly, the main theme, also presented here, was composed by Danny Elfman, the man from whom Walker inherited the music of the Batman franchise). And as an added bonus, the label is selling Walker’s expanded score to Batman: Mask of the Phantasm, at a lower price. Hopefully this means more of the music to Batman: TAS (which La La Land distributed one volume of – it quickly sold out) is on its way.
  • And add some more grist to the rumor mill for soundtrack fans: rumors persist that a long-requested title, Family Plot, is on its way. Notable for being the last film of Alfred Hitchcock as well as his only collaboration with soundtrack maestro John Williams, its impending release was allegedly confirmed by a worker for soundtrack retailer Screen Archives Entertainment.
