"Exile" News Round-Up

May 15, 2010 By Mike Duquette 5 Comments

We close another week of reissue news with a trio of tidbits regarding next week's Exile on Main St. reissue from The Rolling Stones and UMe.

First up, you may already know that Stones in Exile, a new documentary which will be excerpted on the DVD accompanying the super-deluxe Exile set (including the double-disc reissue, the album on vinyl and a collectible book), will be released in full on June 22. A bow to Pause & Play for the date notification.

Second of all, message boards have been abuzz about the fact that Target will be selling the Exile bonus disc on its own. We can wholeheartedly confirm this is happening; it'll retail for $9.99 and be packaged as one of those Rarities Editions (finally, they are paying off!). There will also be some sort of silly bundle involving a t-shirt or something too; check your weekly ad this Sunday for details.

Finally, let's kick off the weekend with a listening party of all the Exile performances from the past week on NBC's Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, plus some bonus clips from some of The Stones themselves. Check 'em out after the jump!

Green Day, "Rip This Joint" - 5/10/2010

Taj Mahal with The Roots, "Shine a Light" - 5/10/2010

Keith Urban featuring Chuck Leavell, "Tumbling Dice" - 5/11/2010

Mick Jagger, Keith Richards and a surprise guest talk the pros and cons of the Exile reissue - 5/12/2010

Keith Richards is interviewed - 5/12/2010

Sheryl Crow featuring Chuck Leavell and The Roots, "All Down the Line" - 5/12/2010

Phish, "Loving Cup" - 5/13/2010

And finally, just in case you've managed to miss it, the track list for the deluxe edition of Exile on Main St.

Mike Duquette

Mike Duquette (Founder) was fascinated with catalog music ever since he was a teenager. A 2009 graduate of Seton Hall University with a B.A. in journalism, Mike paired his profession with his passion through The Second Disc, one of the first sites to focus on all reissue labels great and small. His passion for reissues turned into a career, holding positions at Legacy Recordings and Rhino Records and contributing to Allmusic, Discogs, City Pages, Ultimate Classic Rock and Mondo Records, for whom he penned liner notes for his favorite piece of music: John Williams' Oscar-winning score to 'E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial.' Born and raised in New Jersey, Mike lives in Astoria, Queens with his wife, a cat named Ravioli, twin daughters and a large yet tasteful collection of music.

I can't even sleep knowing this is around the corner. This was my favorite of all albums the year it came out. "Tumbing Dice" STILL rules!

Too bad you don't live in Tampa, FL. The local indie store put all 4 versions out for sale on Friday night..sweet!

My indie store in NJ had 'em Thursday, but I was so backlogged with other reissues that I had to save it for this week.

I was all excited about this, until I read Greg Kot's review (and interviews with Jagger and Richards) about how most of the bonus tracks have recent overdubs done by Jagger and Don Was. Guitar, harmonica, and even new vocals?? Ugh... WHY? Apparently Keith really didn't have much to do with this, and this was Mick deciding to make these "new" tracks. I'm sure there's still good stuff here, but this kind of tinkering pretty much kills my intrest in this.

Oh, and I should add all this info came from the Chicago Tribune. Here's a (messy) link:
