Dancing Barefoot: The Feelies Collect Old Covers for New Album

The Feelies Rewind

What started as a simple digital exercise for New Jersey rockers The Feelies is a new collection of some of their harder-to-find cover songs.

The jangle-pop heroes will release Rewind on June 20, a nine-track affair featuring versions of cuts by The Beatles (“She Said She Said,” “Everybody’s Got Something to Hide Except Me and My Monkey”), Neil Young (“Barstool Blues,” “Sedan Delivery”), Bob Dylan (“Seven Days”), The Rolling Stones (“Paint It Black”) and more. Most were recorded during the band’s initial heyday in the ’80s and early ’90s, though “Seven Days” and a version of The Doors’ “Take It As It Comes” were recorded in 2016 and released two years later on a Record Store Day EP.

Rewind kicks off with the group’s take on Patti Smith’s “Dancing Barefoot,” which was the initial driver for the set. The Feelies initially just wanted to make that track, released as a B-side in 1988, available digitally, but ultimately decided to compile even more covers from their archive, which mostly appeared as B-sides and on EPs. (“Me and My Monkey,” featuring an earlier line-up with the rhythm section of bassist Keith DeNunzio and the late Anton Fier on drums, was included on the group’s 1980 debut Crazy Rhythms.)

The Feelies’ cult success through the ’80s and early ’90s led to a spate of celebrated albums on the Stiff, Twin/Tone and A&M labels, including 1986’s The Good Earth, which was co-produced by R.E.M.’s Peter Buck. A mainstay of the tri-state club scene until their dissolution in 1991, the band’s best-known line-up (frontman Glenn Mercer, guitarist Bill Million, bassist Brenda Sauter, drummer Stan Demeski and percussionist Dave Weckerman) reunited in 2008. They’ve released two original albums since then, as well as a 2023 tribute album to one of their primary influences, The Velvet Underground.

Rewind will be available as a CD and sky-blue LP, limited to just 1500 copies and available through Bar/None’s official web store and the group’s Bandcamp page. Get your copy below.

This is really an expanded version of the UNCOVERED EP, down to the artwork, which had 4 of these tracks on it:
    1. Seven Days (Dylan)
    2. Take It As It Comes (Doors)
    3. Dancing Barefoot (Patti)
    4. Barstool Blues (Neil)
