Don't Do Me Like What?

July 19, 2010 By Mike Duquette 8 Comments

A quick heads-up from our friends at Pause & Play: Amazon has put up a listing for a deluxe edition of Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers' Damn the Torpedoes to be released by Geffen and Universal Music Enterprises. There's no info other than a release date (October 12), but hopefully there'll be some good vault material present.

Damn the Torpedoes was The Heartbreakers' first LP for MCA, following the sale of Shelter Records to the label. It featured the band's first Top 10 hit, "Don't Do Me Like That." Hit the jump to see the original track list for the album, as well as some speculative extra tracks to include.

Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers, Damn the Torpedoes (Backstreet Records MCA 5015, 1979)

  1. Refugee – 3:22
  2. Here Comes My Girl – 4:27
  3. Even the Losers – 4:01
  4. Shadow of a Doubt (A Complex Kid) – 4:25
  5. Century City – 3:45
  6. Don't Do Me Like That – 2:44
  7. You Tell Me – 4:35
  8. What Are You Doin' in My Life? – 3:27
  9. Louisiana Rain – 5:54

Possible bonus content:

  • "Casa Dega": non-LP B-side to "Don't Do Me Like That" - MCA 41138, 1979. Also released on the Playback box set - MCA MCAD6-11375, 1996.
  • "Something Else" (Live): B-side to U.K. double 7" of "Don't Do Me Like That" - MCA 596, 1979. Also released on the Playback box set - MCA MCAD6-11375, 1996.
  • "Stories We Could Tell" (Live): B-side to U.K. double 7" of "Don't Do Me Like That" - MCA 596, 1979
  • "It's Raining Again": non-LP B-side to "Refugee" - MCA 41169, 1980. Also released on the Playback box set - MCA MCAD6-11375, 1996.
  • "Don't Bring Me Down" (Live in Boston): U.K. 12" B-side to "Refugee" - MCAT 539, 1979
  • "Louisiana Rain" (Original Version): from the Playback box set - MCA MCAD6-11375, 1996

Mike Duquette (Founder) was fascinated with catalog music ever since he was a teenager. A 2009 graduate of Seton Hall University with a B.A. in journalism, Mike paired his profession with his passion through The Second Disc, one of the first sites to focus on all reissue labels great and small. His passion for reissues turned into a career, holding positions at Legacy Recordings and Rhino Records and contributing to Allmusic, Discogs, City Pages, Ultimate Classic Rock and Mondo Records, for whom he penned liner notes for his favorite piece of music: John Williams' Oscar-winning score to 'E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial.' Born and raised in New Jersey, Mike lives in Astoria, Queens with his wife, a cat named Ravioli, twin daughters and a large yet tasteful collection of music.

Petty has recently spoken of the possibility of releasing 5.1 mixes of his back catalogue; wouldn't "Damn The Torpedoes" be a nice place to start, providing he could convince Universal to go along with him? Fingers crossed.

I hope it won't be a combo of the Eagle Rock DVD with the album. It has to be b-sides, outtakes, etc. Perhaps, there's even a full live show from the period that could be released which did not have any tracks featured on the The Live Anthology.

I guess the rights to this reverted to Universal? Didn't his first few albums go to Warner?

For bonus content, how about the original Mudcrutch version of "Don't Do Me Like That?"

@RoyalScam: I think that was just his first two albums, "Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers" and "You're Gonna Get It!" Those two were originally on Shelter, then somehow Petty got the rights... they were reissued on his Gone Gator imprint, first through MCA, then through Warner.

This is cool news. A few years ago when universal deluxe editions started, I read somewhere that petty hated record companies and there wasn't very much left "in the vault" for a deluxe edition anyway. Hope Andy mckaie is involved with the project.

I'd bet the house we'll see a live show as the bonus disc. And I'll be saving my money.
