More UMe Deluxe Editions En Route for Petty, Lizzy

October 8, 2010 By Mike Duquette 2 Comments

A few more deluxe editions are forthcoming from Universal Music Enterprises, and they're jaw-droppers for a couple of different reasons.

Depending on how long you've been following the reissue world, you've actually known about both of them. One is a deluxe edition of Damn the Torpedoes, the classic album from Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers. (News of this broke not long after The Second Disc started doing what it does.) The surprising thing about this particular reissue is that it will be available in two formats: the by-now-standard Deluxe Edition, and a CD/Blu-Ray combo! (This version will include the original LP on CD with a Blu-Ray disc featuring standard stereo and 5.1 surround mixes of the album and bonus videos for "Here Comes My Girl" and "Refugee.") For all audiophiles who are reading us (and I'm sure many of you are proud audiophiles), let's all hope this is the start of an interesting trend in the catalogue world.

Next up is a release long-running catalogue enthusiasts thought may never come: a deluxe edition of Vagabonds of the Western World, the third LP by Irish rockers Thin Lizzy. This double-disc set, featuring a scoop of non-LP B-sides and mixes with another disc of live performances recorded by the BBC, was first announced sometime in 2007 but disappeared not long after pre-order links were actually activated. Fans will doubtlessly be crossing their fingers that the October 25 release date pulls through.

The Petty sets are available November 2, while the Thin Lizzy set should be released October 25 in the U.K.; you know where to find the track lists.

Mike Duquette

Mike Duquette (Founder) was fascinated with catalog music ever since he was a teenager. A 2009 graduate of Seton Hall University with a B.A. in journalism, Mike paired his profession with his passion through The Second Disc, one of the first sites to focus on all reissue labels great and small. His passion for reissues turned into a career, holding positions at Legacy Recordings and Rhino Records and contributing to Allmusic, Discogs, City Pages, Ultimate Classic Rock and Mondo Records, for whom he penned liner notes for his favorite piece of music: John Williams' Oscar-winning score to 'E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial.' Born and raised in New Jersey, Mike lives in Astoria, Queens with his wife, a cat named Ravioli, twin daughters and a large yet tasteful collection of music.

I'm glad the Petty has some unreleased stuff on there, but couldn't they have squeezed this all on a single disc? (And how could a live recording from 1980 have been released as a B-side in 1979?)

Great updates, as usual -- your site is a wonderful resource.

The (U.K. double 7″ of “Don’t Do Me Like That” – MCA 596, 1979) was a limited reissue of the single, released on June 6, 1980 containing two live tracks from London recorded in March 1980.
